Aesthetic ? re washer and dryer set

Dh and I are building a new house and tonight we were in the laundry room "visualizing" where the washer and dryer will be. Since the set will be on those pedestal deals that makes them 52" tall! And they also will be about 30" in depth which will make them "protrude" in front of the window(which is a front of the house window). If we returned the pedestals then they wouldn't show (14" shorter)but wouldn't be as conveinient to use. What would you do?

Do you mean the back will be showing or the side?

You could put up a cafe curtain. The kind where you have the little valance on top and then about halfway down there is another curtain of the same material. If it's just a side view, hang regular drapes and pull them equally on each side. There are also the silhouette blinds. They come in various degrees of privacy, but they would still let in the light. Another thought is to do a stained glass window.

The new set I am getting next week is going to show somewhat on the side. That is why I went for the pedestals opposed to just building a platform. If it really bugs me, I can remove the pedestals. I really wanted the working height that the pedestals provided. Personally I think I will get to where I won't even notice the slight impairment of the window view. I am more concerned that I can reach into the cabinets that hang above the washer/dryer units. However, my window is on the side of the house behind the fence.

Thanks for the great suggestions :) I had thought of a blind of some kind but then I thought it would always have to be closed. Yes, it would show from the side; I don't think I would even be concerned if the window didn't face the front of the house. I love the stained glass idea! I can just hear DH though, LOL!

I'm also having my w/d moved from side by side to a closet (that is yet to be built). I will have my second meeting soon with my contractor and the w/d are high on my list of getting straight. Thanks to gardenweb - can't remember which forum - probably laundry), I plan to ask for a "panel" so that the water source can be reached and examined without pulling out both machines. My contractor has already mentioned that we need to make sure there is enough room in the closet for the dryer vent (to do its thing). He looked at my set up now in the kitchen where the vent requires about 5 or six inches. This is added to the depth of the closet which will of course include the physical depth of the machine..

homepro01, all types of clothes are being washed. And while I really don't like unitized (stacked) washer/dryers that is all the space will handle. I am really just trying to figure out whether the Kenmore 1.5cf is really the same machine as the GE 2.0cf which according to Sears online support also manufactures the Kenmore. I am skeptical that GE produces a unit for Kenmore with approximately the same outside dimensions, yet it has .5 cf less capacity. If I did not mention it, the Kenmore does have a lower street price. After further research. I think it is possible the Kenmore is actually a Frigidaire or Whirlpool which do apparently produce 1.5cf units or the specs on the Kenmore or GE are just wrong. The only way I can think of to get a firm determination is if I can actually find some of these machines out on display. Maybe I can find them on the floor at a Sears Outlet? I have actually never been to one, but I know they sometimes have both brands at issue.

I have a speed queen front loader in our Fl house. I loved it. I'ts still under warranty.Then I heard they were discontinuing this model so I bought it qucikly In Southern Utah before they ran out. Personally, I HATE European washing machines. I lived in Europe in the late 70's and the machines were a PITA. Yes they were energy effecient. Not on my energy and time just theirs; government mandates. This house we bought in Southern Utah had an Asco washer and dryer. They looked nice under the counter but oh my god, they took forever to wash and dry and you could only fit a few towels and undies in there. I'm sorry but I have other things to do in my life. I am in the process of having the Speed Queen front loader and dryer installed. They have been sitting in the garage for several months. They however have a 4 year warranty so I'm not too worried. If you want all of the bells and whistles, this is not the machine. If you want something durable that has no plastic parts and can do a large load., look into it. Your mileage may vary as they say. You could also put a translucent covering on it so you still get the light in. Something like the frosted window look or something. I'd be more concerned about the functionality of the units than if it showed through a window. You can always pull a shade or frost the window or something.

Maybe paint a mural on the back of the washer & dryer!

I love my pedestals and couldn't use FLs without them.

You can get blinds that draw from the bottom up so that you can block view of the WD on the bottom and still let in light and view above. Another option would be shutters in pairs -- top and bottom so that you could close the bottom ones and leave the upper ones open for light.

If you like the stained glass idea, you could search for a panel, have one made or make something yourself on a plexiglass panel. I know someone who made a panel for a bathroom window where they needed privacy and light -- glued glass pieces and baubles on and then grouted it like a tile mosaic piece in a freeform pattern.

No pedestals for me, thanks. I prefer (reachable) counter space over the washer and dryer.
