Just a quick heads up regarding a gas dryer in a new (or recently remodeled) house where there has been recent painting or floor finishing. It is not at all uncommon that there is a period (could last as long as months, but certainly it is weeks) while the solvents and chemicals in the paint and floor finishes are outgassing during which running a gas dryer can create a very nasty burning smell in your house and on your clothes. It is the result of the combustion of the residual chemicals in the air from the paint, sealants, varnishes, polyurethanes etc. being burnt by the dryer's flame. Reportedly the smell is very hard to get out of clothes dried in this situation. The cure is to run the dryer during this period with ample outside ventilation nearby so it uses more outdoor air than indoor air. It is a self-curing problem with time, and fortunately it's warm weather so it won't be too inconvenient for you to open a nearby window during operation. (Of course if the dryer is affected by all this outgassing, it kinda makes you wonder what it's doing to your lungs, but that's a different issue.) The problem of a stinky gas dyer in new houses and renovations crops up here often enough that I thought I could save you any anxiety over it, in advance. The smell is described as being a markedly burning smell, quite different from the odorants put in the LP to make it easier to detect leaks. You could test by running the dryer without clothes in it. While that may stink up your house a bit, simple airing will fix that. But people here have reported that removing the burnt odor from clothes dried in outgasssing conditions is more difficult. The problem is not universal, just not uncommon, either. Hope it doesn't occur for you. Molly~

Hvtech24, I once was a huge supporter of Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports. I personally knew the late Prof. Colston Warne, who founded the organization, and I treated the detailed tests results in the CU publications as if they were engraved on the tablets that Moses brought down from the mountain. Even today, I do not question CU's objectivity. But I gave up completely on CU several years ago, for one reason: Repeatedly and consistently, they ask the wrong questions. The reports will give you honest answers to the wrong questions, but if the wrong question has been asked, the answers are irrelevant. I have not read the report to which you allude, and therefore cannot comment on what went into CU's blanket assessment of "gentleness." It may mean nothing more than that one machine has a preprogramed cycle for "hand wash" and another does not; you tell me. But I can tell you -- keeping it strictly to laundry appliances -- that CU blackballs any clothes dryer from a Recommended Rating if the door of the clothes dryer is hinged at the bottom (hamper door) instead of at the side. CU automatically gives every dryer that has a hamper door a Not Recommended Rating. Yet we -- our laundry appliances are in the basement which has an old poured concrete floor that is impossible to keep clean -- look for a hamper door as the number one criterion in a dryer purchase, because the hamper door catches articles of wet laundry that fall during the transfer from the washer to the dryer before they can hit the dirty floor. Back to the washing machine: we encounter less pilling and broken fibers in our washed laundry since we replaced our former front loading Frigidaire (= Electrolux) washing machine with our current Samsung. That is OUR experience, but it may have nothing at all to do with CU's evaluation of "gentleness."

Jmith, Everyone loads varies from type of fabrics to water temperatures. My loads is all over the place where I can wash my king size flat/fitted and 4 king pillow case with a king size fleece cover in one load to two bathroom mats in one load. Weighing fabrics does nothing but causes extra unnecessary step in doing laundry. Once you do several large or extra large load, the machine will let you how much you can fill the machine without over loading. If anybody over load this machine will notice how long it take for the load to balance for the spin cycle! I'm a older WT Lux user......

Mamapinky0, I stopped using fabric softener about a year ago and have gone to using white vinegar. I love how it cuts the soap and my clothes were not getting dingy from the oils in the softener. I finally bought some HE detergent at Sam's Club. They sell the powdered "Windfresh" brand and while it does have a scent, it is not overwhelming. I also had a neighbor give me 2 bottles of All HE liquid. I'm still using a lot less than I normally would, but the clothes are coming out super clean and the washer looks clean as well. Mitch, I've left the door open all the way after I finish laundry and then push it almost closed. So far I am totally loving this W/D pair.
