Hoping You Can Help Me Rectify a Cooking Mistake

I made a pan of cornbread dressing and for the first time ever, I made a dressing that is so salty (don't understand what I did) that it is nearly to the point of being inedible. Do any of you have a suggestion for what I can do to rectify this mistake I made?

I would toss it and start over. Too much salt is still too much salt.

You could make some cornbread or grits without salt and try mixing that with it, but just mix small portions together to start with to see if it helps. Adding bread would not help because bread already has a lot of salt in it. I often make cornbread stuffing with grits, but if I make cornbread, I do not use any flour and I do not use any sugar.

1. The feeder roots will remain in the top 8 inches of your soil, which would be your raised bed section of soil. The anchor roots would go down into your poorer drained soil. Dig a large hole in your native soil to loosen it up before building a raised bed above it. 2. Some roses are winter hardy, but, not cane hardy. The canes can die back to the ground on some roses during cold winters. 3. Roses can be over-wintered in containers. Roses need to go dormant in your climate, so, a unheated shed, unheated garage, etc. could be used to over-winter container roses. You would have to learn container over-wintering techniques. 4. Best time to plant a rose in your climate is in the Spring after your last frost. If you try and plant into the ground now, try your hardest to not disturb the tiny feeder roots on the rose. (If you do, it may cause severe transplant shock or possible death to your rose.) So, try and keep the dirt intact around the roots when planting and keep it well watered after planting. You may have to provide shade for it during the hottest parts of the day. By placing a chair over it, etc.

Well, an update and an obsevation. I had taken a break from setting the traps, since I do not like the task, but had to resume when the skunks began doing damage again. Last night, I caught two more. I awoke at dawn, performed the necessary unpleasantries, and they were carried away with the weekly trash by 6:30 a.m. . So far, in six total days of trapping in my small lot, I have eliminated seven skunks. I had also gotten a raccoon,but after it chattering all night and keeping us awake, right as the sky began showing light, its' partner figured out how to release it, much to our amazement. My observation is this: the animals are strongly attracted to the fish emulsion that I feed to my vegetables. I feed everything once per week, a bit of the garden nearly every day, and those were the areas being dug up. I had determined to only fertilize early of a morning, then thoroughly water in the evening to dissipate the scent. Alas, we went to bed early, I forgot to water my new plants set in that day, and the skunks scratched them to death before they were themselves trapped. I am hopeful that by careful attention to my applications of the fish emulsion, and watering in well, I can cut way back on the trapping/ euthanizing.

Sorry about your slope. :-( The deer will eat anything still young and tender. I planted some small lantana last summer and they were cropped back. Also the oregano were eventually cropped back too. As long as they don't pull up your plants by the roots, they should be okay. Think of it as a free pruning service!

I also have 4 kids and I have given my new washer and dryer a very thorough workout. It's a high efficiency top load Samsung washer, and I like it so much more than my old Whirlpool front load. It doesn't tie the clothes up in knots like some top-loaders do. The newer front-load machines have very long cycle times, but the Samsung is faster. I haven't been pretreating (although I use Tide with Bleach and occasionally pour a little directly on a severe stain just before washing) and the clothes have come out very clean. The capacity is amazing - I found myself wandering around looking for more clothes to put in it. Both the washer and dryer were rated highly in Consumer Reports, too. Model numbers Samsung WA5451 and DV5451, and I paid just over $700 for each on sale. Good luck with your search!

I agree with Annie. It's not just the unpalatable taste - but do you really want to wake up tomorrow retaining all that excess salt? :-)

I also agree with the "other Annie", there are times when it makes no sense to throw good ingredients after bad, and just end up with a final result that's edible, but not really all that good.

Somehow I never take my own advice, though.

I seriously considered trying the grits recommendation, but in the end decided to just throw it away.

The fact that you say it is almost inedible makes me think that you should toss it too. But , another option would be to make a dressing using half corn bread and half regular bread cubes. Maybe "diluting" the cornbread with bread might salvage the dressing.

My first thought was maybe it could be used in meatloaves. Freeze the remainder to not waste it, but it's not like it's a huge loss. It happens. No need to fret over it.

Thought I would update you about my quest.

Last night, as I was putting water in the rice cooker to cook rice for chicken fried rice today, I thought, hmmmm. So I put the cornbread dressing in the water and mixed it well, then put in the rice, then added the cut-up, leftover chicken breast I was going to use for chicken fried rice, and last added the rice, and stirred again. Turned on the cooker and about 15 minutes before the rice was through cooking, poured petite green peas over the top of the mixture. No additional salt was added.

I was very pleased with the results - just the right amount of salt for everything. Although it was good, I cannot say I will write down the "recipe" and make it again, but I did achieve my goal of salvaging the terribly salty cornbread stuffing.
