I hate to tell you this, but washing is no guarantee that fabrics won't bleed later. I have no idea why, but even fabric from the same bolt might act differently. Just yesterday, I had a small scrap of RJR panel print to make a label for a quilt. Spritzed it a bit first with cold water to press first, and very soon, the reds ran. All the fabrics were rinsed in cold water before I used them, and nothing ran. So, I got another idential scrap, and rinsed it in cold water first, to check. No running. Huh? So I got another and spritzed it. No running. It was all from the same bolt. Hmmmm. I guess I will just use one that didn't run. Go figure. I'm left to wonder what will happen if the quilt itself ever gets washed. It would not be the first time I've had this happen. BlueBars

We first bought a Kenmore Elite HE toploader in 2012, thinking the upper cabinet space requirement limited us to toploader option. (I believe that LG was the actual manufacturer then). Well, the toploader was horrific. I'd put in navy tops and they would come out with white soap residue like the spin wasn't working to get all the clothes stirred up. Sears was awesome; they let me exchange them for the Kenmore Elite front loaders, also by LG. MUCH better! I've been happily using them ever since. Put them on pedestals to save my back. I referred my dad to Speed Queen because he lives where water is not an issue. For us in So. CA, water conservation trumps the water hungry Speed Queens so use water conservation as a guide. HTH

Mold problem. I don;t think anyone has mentioned wash temps. playing a role in schmutz buildup in your washer outer tub. A constant use of cold water only washes with only liquid detergents and liquid fabric softener WILL cause a smelly moldy build up in the outer tub. Your front loader does not use much water so using hot and warm will not add much to your energy bills. Most modern fabrics can tolerate hotter temps. than the scaredy cat wash in cold labels imply. If a retailer is selling non pre-shrunk all cotton clothing without saying so then that is their problem, not ours. As others mentioned above first try a hot wash with bleach and then a couple citric acid hot cycles and see if that eliminates the problem, if your machine has a special cleaning cycle even better. If after this you still have to replace consider both the above Maytag as well as a Fisher Paykel wash plate top loader which unlike some washplate machines does have effective cleaning as well as Consumer Reports recommendation of frontload LG-get one with a built-in heater- which they say is very reliable for the time period they say is the cost-effective life of a modern washer, which of course is much shorter than your grandmother's 30 year old Maytag toploader. I don't know if a Miele meets your $1500 limit but they have special wool and delicate cycles and are considered by most of their owners to be the ultimate, should take everything except your king comforter.
