Am I the only one who doesn't make a lot of goodies
Comments (24)I have pared down my baking significantly as far as cookies and treats go. When the kids were home I made tins and trays of cookies for bus drivers, teachers' lounges, older folks in our neighborhood who no longer baked for themselves, etc.. My group of 6 close women friends looked so forward to them because they didn't bake. Then the kids grew up and moved, we moved from the old neighborhood and all my women friends started South Beach, WW, or Sugar Busters diets and I didn't want to undermine their efforts. A couple years ago when my Mom was diagnosed w/ breast cancer (her 2nd time) right after T-Giving I was overwhelmed w/ her care over the holidays and just didn't do the baking that year. The world did not come to an end, and I discovered that I could choose to keep the tradition - or not. These days I bake when I choose to, when I have guests and when asked to bring dessert to a gathering. Like someone above noted, it's not like in years past when people really seemed to treasure the homemade baked gift. The cost in time and ingredients seems greater than in the past. I'm delighted to bake for those I know enjoy it, but I don't dole out the homemade treats the way I used to....See MoreNatural gas range that doesn't require electricity?
Comments (27)I have a gas range top. It will light with a match when the power is out. I think its an important feature for people living in certain areas, ie hurricane prone areas or frequent electrical outages. When hurricane Charlie hit us, we had no power or water for over a week. It's a long time if you haven't experienced that kind of event. All of our friends had ranges and gas ovens that could not be lit with a match. We all had tons of food in the freezer thawing so everyone came to our house to cook. It was fun having everyone bring their food and cook it on my 6 burner stove top but I would never have a stove top without the ability to light it with a match. The oven is electric but I can live without that. My husband went on a long distance kayak trip many moons ago. One fellow was a professional baker who made an oven from a cardboard box. I wasn't there so can't give the details but stories are they ate well with everything he baked from bread to breakfast pastries etc he was the hit of the trip. How one can construct an oven from cardboard and use it to bake over a camp fire leaves me wondering. But...it's a true story Inga...See MoreWhy does anyone put gravel on top of their potted plants?
Comments (36)Hey,Mike, Glad they arrived in good shape, no cold damages. Yes, for tropicals I would water once they potted up but for succulents I would wait a couple days to water them unless you keep them in a very warm temperature. The aloe 'Christmas carol' will color up for you nicely if given more light. The Haworthia cymniformnis is/was a variegated one. But the variegation is lost since I bought it. not sure what happened probably something to do with my grow condition? See if you have better luck to have the variegation back:) From the plants you probably can tell my indoor light condition is not idea for them.lol. I am sure they will thrive under your care. On the topic of top dressing. I don't top dressing with pebbles. Did it once but they get in the way when I repotting the plants. Although I use rocks (got from beach) to hold newly repotted plants. by the way, love your pot, Nancy. Good it didn't break. Did your kitty get a time out? :)...See MoreDoes anyone here make sourdough bread?
Comments (24)That's too funny, Terriks. This has become our family activity: a Sourdough Starter Race. Each one of us got a 1 qt mason jar, and I had everyone watch a video (I thought this guy would be more appealing than say, Pioneer Woman : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1Ssdzk6uhI ). Then they had a choice of flours, liquids, yogurt, raisins, honey, berries juices etc. It was up to them what they did but I advised equal weight liquid and flour. We are feeding them every day after our Linner (now dubbed Dejeuner Tardif). In 10 days, we will discard all but 2T of each contestant's starter. Then we will feed them, and wait 24 hours. Whoever's grows the fastest wins and that what we'll use to bake bread. Knowing my oddly competitive bunch, I realized I had to hide the yeast packets, baking soda and baking powder lest they cheat! Still don't know what to do if they try sabotage... Elunia that is a work of art! PS I could not find organic whole wheat flour anywhere, though I did get some other flours that look great. I ended up buying whole wheat flour from a farm in PA on Etsy. Like my garden tomatoes, this process (cue the banettons and bench scraper) will yield the most expensive food we've ever had, rivalling Blue Hill...See More- 16 years agolast modified: 11 years ago
