Stress and weight gain
Comments (22)Wodka, I lost my husband in May - he died in his sleep. He wasnâÂÂt sick, but he wasnâÂÂt too healthy, either. It was a total shock and I still donâÂÂt quite believe it. I also have a big support system of people taking me to dinner and making sure that I'm busy. I haven't been working out as much as I used to, but all summer I was like a crazy woman in the garden doing all the heavy digging and lifting that my husband used to do for me (I've been re-arranging). I'm just a few years younger than you, and I thank God that my body is strong enough to do that work - there are many people our age that have physical problems. I've lost close to 10 pounds, mostly from my middle and I'll share the way I've been feeding myself - maybe it can help you. I buy chicken breasts or pork chops or small steaks when they're on special and I freeze them separately in zipper bags so it's easy to pull out just one piece and defrost it in a pot of hot water in the sink. I usually grill that meat (or fish or veggie burger) and also have a salad or sauteed spinach. I now rarely make rice or potatoes (something my husband insisted on having), so I'm eating just protein and vegetables, and there's fewer pots to clean up, too. When I don't pack my lunch I go to a local soup/salad bar, except for those very stressful days when I can't resist a ruben and French fries, but I try to keep that to a minimum. I'll get Chinese or other take out for dinner maybe once a week. And I still drink wine! But with winter coming and the long dark nights to get through, I'm looking for an affordable gym to go to after work to have a place to go and to keep moving. And I'm going to look into massage - what flyleft said makes sense. I'm sure toxins can build up from grief. Since my husband didn't take care of his health, I'm determined that I will. I also turned down the anti-depressants my doctor offered. I told her I cry every day, many times, but not all day. But like others have said, give yourself a break - this is a very big thing, especially after 40 years together. You will find your way....See MoreSo exactly how much weight have you gained?!?!?!
Comments (27)I lost about 10 pounds in two weeks (it seems like) after our flood (picture me going back and forth about 20 times a day between the flooded apt. and the temporary rental with a large red shopping cart moving china and other misc. delicates while the movers threw everything into boxes). To say nothing of having to walk up 27 flights at least 5 times in the day before they got the elevators working again! But now, 9 months later in a tiny rental with no dining table (we eat in shifts at a bar height kitchen passthru) and many meals in restaurants (gives us a break from said tiny apt.) and weeks and weeks of stressful mold remediation and a fire/flood contractor from HELL - I have gained about 8 pounds back. I'm counting on the move back (in approx. 3 months) to help lose the weight (more trips with the red shopping cart)...See MoreMeds and Weight Gain
Comments (10)Thanks alisande. It actually feels like fluid retention because once it starts, I seem to blow up - don't laugh everyone because that's exactly what it looks like - LOL; like I could float away. I just had all levels checked and everything is fine. I do know I tend to carry a lot of fluid. I'm taking very small dose of meds for that but not regularly because it's way too much everyday. I end of losing too much magnesium (not Potassium, if you can believe that one). I've been using some supplements that have cut down on some of that. But nothing seems to help that tire area. Glad you mentioned this though. I feel so much better. Although I know that I have to watch the fluid retention and get regular bloodwork, at least it's something that I can deal with other than just gaining weight like crazy. BTW, I just talked to my siser who is really into holistic health, and she mentioned that since my A1c is only 6.4, I might want to try to reduce it further through nutrition. She knows people with much higher levels and on insulin, that have actually been taken off of meds. Diabetes is such an ugly disease - between it's damage and the meds. I put it up there with CA. I'm ready to try anything. Thanks so much for your suggestion!!...See MorePregnancy Related Weight Gain/Loss
Comments (6)Lonepiper, how many months along are you? I didn't gain any weight either for the first 3 months, I actually lost weight too. Then 4-5 months, I had only gained around ten pounds. By the time I was 7 months though, I had gained 30. Owch! Listen to your doctor, unless you have other concerns with his advice. We're all individuals, as long as your baby is healthy I think there shouldn't be any worry about actual poundage gained. Some people don't hardly gain any weight. Some get as big as a house. The main thing to remember is that your baby is taking from you everything they need. Good nutrition is important for the baby, yes, but the baby will take what it needs from you. You need to replinish your supply for your health, so the baby will have more to take and not leave you depleted. Baby Center says: How much weight should I gain during my pregnancy? It depends on your height and weight, or body mass index (BMI), before you conceived. You can calculate your BMI here. If pre-pregnancy weight was in the healthy range for your height according to your healthcare provider (a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9), you should gain between 25 and 35 pounds, gaining 2 to 5 pounds in the first trimester and about 1 pound per week for the rest of your pregnancy for the optimal growth of your baby. If you were underweight for your height at conception (a BMI below 18.5), you should gain 28 to 40 pounds. If you were overweight for your height (a BMI of 25 to 29.9), you should gain 15 to 25 pounds. If you were obese (a BMI of 30 or higher), you should gain no more than 15 pounds. If you're having twins you should gain about 35 to 45 pounds. If you fall into any of these four categories, talk to your healthcare provider about how much you should gain each month....See Morepolly929
