Unless you were part of a class action suit and applied for the money, I wouldn't cash it. You might take it to the bank and see if they can tell you if it is a legitimate check. Sounds fishy to me.

That article is dated over two years ago. Anyone could be using it to run a scam. I'm just sayin'.......

I was a part of a class action suit with Toshiba about 10 years ago. I received papers from a lawyer's office, explaining the suit, forms to fill out (didn't ask for personal info, just info on the defective product). I was kept updated by mail for the months involved in settling the suit.

If this is your first and only contact, I think you'd be best to check it out with your bank and maybe the post office.

I have the money to gain, nothing to lose. Except my signature which I can stretch out to a line. There, but unreadable to anyone.
Hopefully the bank can help me out. Possibly they have run into this check already. I will let you know what happens.

Years ago, I had a gift certificate for the Old Farmers Almanac Store. Well, they went out of business and wouldn't honor the certificate, so I forgot about it. A couple of years later, I got a message similar to yours, and they refunded the amount of the certificate.

If you deposit and it gets returned for any reason you could get a charge for it. I have gotten checks like this, but not this large. Just check date issued, and how long you can hold it before date expires, and photo copy check before depositing. The bank manager can verify the bank listed on the check and even call them. (not a teller)
Sometimes it does take several years for a settlement.

I think you should head for the nearest shredder.

Unless you have been a part of a class action or any other lawsuit shred that check now. No one gives you something for nothing. If the bank would cash that check (which they sometimes do) and it is not valid YOU will be responsible for the amount of the check and any and all costs incurred to the bank.... Get rid of it.

Take it to the bank, and they will be able to tell if it's a valid check.

Just yesterday I got a email from eBay motors telling me about a class action lawsuit. I did sell a car on eBay during the dates stated. I will get a check (like everyone else who sold a car during that time), the only way I wouldn't is if I opted out by signing some forms. If the email had went to my spam folder I'd never have read it... but I'd still get a check later. I won't get very much money, but I'll take whatever they send me.

If a class action was brought and you were found to have done business (forensic audit may have turned you up) with the defendant the only way you would not be part of the class action a settlement is if you opted out. You don't actually join most class actions but you do get a form letter with an opt out clause. The opt out is done before any settlement. This allows one to sue as an individual instead of taking whatever the settlement might be if there is one. If you do not opt out then you are part of the settlement.

Lynn D link shows a class action for over-payment of prescription drugs. If you had a lot of prescriptions during the time period then the check is legit.

If you don't want it, just endorse it and send it to me. I'll deposit it gladly.

IF it was goofy, I wonder if it would be possible for the issuer to somehow get your bank account number from it if you cashed it, which could lead to all sorts of trouble, IF it's not legit.

Correct that you don't join a class action lawsuit. If you're eligible, you are automatically "in", unless you opt out, either on general principal or to persue your own lawsuit.

I'm currently waiting on one now. In the end, needless to say,it's the class action attorneys who really make the money.

Yes your bank information will go onto the check when cashed. And no, the bank can't tell you with 100% accuracy if the check is legit. Doesn't anyone pay attention to the hundreds of people who shipped their cars overseas for a certified check only to find out 6 months later the certified check, that the bank said was good, turned out to be fraudulent?

For $100 it's not likely to be a scam like this however when I was with the PI firm we would use checks to locate people to serve process, etc. Many people can't say no to a check! LOL

Where did the check come from? It should be from a law office or something and/or have a law office associated with it. I'd check that out. Who represented the class in this suit? Check with the law firm and verified they sent you the check and you were on the list.

Seems strange you'd be part of a CAS and not know anything about the defendant. It could be simply something related to something from a former employer or whatever. But I can't answer that, you'd know better than I would if that were the case.

I wouldn't pitch it nor shred it. But I'd certainly check into it. And possibly open a separate account somewhere to cash it then close the account unless it's drawn on a local bank which I'll bet it's not.

My gut feeling says it's probably legit, but I tend to side with caution.

I'd ask the bank but I think it's okay. We've received settlement checks and cashed them with no consequences.

Went to the bank this afternoon, where three of the tellers and I had a short pow wow over the check. It was decided that it looked reasonable and I was allowed to cash it. If it doesn't go through I only have to return the $100. No gain and no loss. This is an old family area bank, where we all know each other, the tellers are there forever. All the loan officers and managers were busy so we made the final decision. :)
Other than my banks address, there will be no other info included with the check upon its return to its original sender. My endorsement is almost a sqiggle! T~~~~~~

this paragraph right here from the website linked above pretty much answers the question. It says those that will be paid a percentage WERE previously NOTIFIED of the pending trial, if you were not so notified I would question why you are now receiving anything related.

"Potential members of the class of TPPs and consumers who paid a percentage co-payment were previously notified of the pending trial against McKesson and had until November 15, 2008 to exclude themselves from the Class. Class Members who did not exclude themselves are included in the Proposed Settlement and will be bound by the Court's rulings. Uninsured or underinsured consumers who paid the cash price of settlement drugs may exclude themselves and will not get money back but will keep their rights to sue McKesson at their own expense. A request for exclusion must be in writing by June 8, 2009. The Court will determine whether to approve the McKesson Proposed Settlement at a Fairness Hearing on July 23, 2009 at 2 p.m."

Some checks that come in the mail are contracts to buy something, You sign you buy.....but that doesn't sound like that.

i kept getting a check in mail from discover,it didnt say discover it was called points check .I decided to cash it and that gave discover the ok to put things on my account,take itout of my account, like 22.00 for a purse insurance,another was tires insurance.I just stopped discover becauise they insisted trying to charge me things I didnt order.When I said no it came next month.So Id take it to the bank too.Not too sure they would know till they cash it.
Now I got a suit check from maytag for thier neptune washer.I had to prove by giving reciepts of all repairs we had done.After like a year I got a check for ammount of repairs it was morethan we paid for washer.

Thanks Ravencajen for the link. When this letter came in the mail, I wondered if I had missed a prior letter. We get so much junk mail, it could have been thrown out or possibly it didn't arrive at all. Hard to say.

I still don't trust checks that come in the mail this way, but it was something like a 350 million dollar settlement. It would look mass produced, considering all the checks they had to write!

Cashed it. Turned out well, I suppose. Feels weird getting something unexpected, and it's legit. Still waiting for the 8 random magazines, generic vi@gr@ from Canada or something worse to appear in my mailbox, now that I cashed it.

I just received this check today and still do not know if it is a scam OR legit. I HAVE had RX for several of these drugs and have not received previous notifications. Sure hate to throw away good money. What should I do???
