When do I pay my cash on the build?

Using ballpark figures here, if the total construction cost is $550.: We have $250K cash for the build, but want to hold onto it as long as possible during the build. We own the land outright. We'll need to borrow $300K for the construction-to-perm loan. The bank will accept our land as the initial downpayment. SO, as the build goes on, eventually we'll spend the $300K bank loan. Is that when we start putting our cash into the build? And how do we do that?

I don't understand the mechanics of this. Do we pay our cash directly to the builder then? The one nice thing about the bank loan is they will administer the funds and approve the builder's draws. We want that service. But, when we start putting in our cash, we have to do that part of the watchdogging if we're paying directly to the builder.

Please educate me before I talk to my banker again so she doesn't think I'm a total ignoramus.
