Opinions on a Trane & Carrier Quote

Hello,

My AC unit is failing and needs to be replaced.

I have two quotes so far, one from a Carrier and one from a Trane dealer.

Since my system is 11 years old they recommend I replace the entire system to get the tax credit.

I live in the Southern Maryland area and Humidity can get really bad here.

Please let me know what you think about these two estimates.

The Infinity control wins over the TCONT803. If you want to compare more comparable setups, consider the Honeywell IAQ thermostat with the Trane system. The IAQ can control humidity in a similar way to the Infinity control, by controlling blower speed. The Carrier 25HNA6 is a 2-stage outdoor unit, having both high and low capacities, so that will give the Carrier an advantage with humidity control.

For the return air, I'd sure want more than one 14x20. Sounds restrictive. I have a 3.5 ton system with two 20x20 returns and one 12x12.

System wise, the Infinity will give you more features. Both would keep you comfortable if sized right and put with the right control (IAQ for the Trane, which is a dual fuel control so one shouldn't be needed as far as I know).

If you go with the Carrier system, then ask about a 10 year parts and labor warranty from Carrier. It will cost a little more money, but you will be assured you will not have to pay anything for the next 10 years if there is a problem. In addition the warranty work can be done by any Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer. This will protect you in case your dealer goes out of business some time in the future.

Yes, because the 65 air handler meets the tax credit requirements (though theoretically only one of the systems would need to qualify since the cap is $1500). For the 3 ton unit, either the 4TEE3F39 or 4TEE3F40 are fine. All XR15 models are rated at 75 dBA (sound level). This isn't the lowest nor the highest across the sound level spectrum, but it is average and would not be considered loud by most. Even Carrier's Infinity model exceeds this sound rating in some situations. So, I highly doubt it will be of any issue whatsoever, but sound is a perceived nuisance.

Heil would be okay, but seems to be special order around here. I always had the system serviced/cleaned twice a year up until about 4 years ago. I took an HVAC class (learned just enough to be dangerous/stupid) and got my EPA certification, so I have been maintaining the two systems since then. Anything above charging/cleaning I still call for professionals. I don't presume to tell the professionals anything, but I can listen and ask questions so much better.

Never a bad idea to replace the copper lineset, but oftentimes it is very difficult if not impossible (think about condo complexes where the lineset often runs between walls of other condo units). If reused properly (i.e., blown out with nitrogen with a deep vacuum) and the proper size, they don't always have to be. The leak is most likely not within the lineset because it is one solid piece throughout. 2 stage units provide an advantage in terms of humidity control; however the 16i and Carrier models (and any brand using an unloading Copeland scroll compressor) run at around 80% capacity on low, so there isn't a huge turndown for the price premium. While I prefer Trane equipment over Carrier myself, both manufacturers make excellent equipment with comparable warranties, and both should do a fine job if installed properly. I think in this case, if looking at 2-stage units, the Carrier system with the Infinity control is the better system simply because the Infinity control does a much better job controlling the system than does a standard 2-stage thermostat such as the 802. Looks like the Carrier dealer finds that your home needs a 3.5 ton system (or 4 ton if 2-stage) while the Trane dealer is quoting slightly larger equipment. Something to bring up to the Carrier dealer. However if 3.5 tons is indeed the proper size, and a 4 ton is installed -- while it would not be a major issue in terms of comfort or efficiency -- the 3.5 ton would certainly be better in terms of humidity control and efficiency because it would not be short cycling as much on milder days. The single stage Comfort 15 with v/s air handler and the TP-PRH control will also do a good job with dehumidification without the added cost of 2-stage, but with the rebates and the Infinity control I think the Performance 16 is the better choice if going the Carrier route. I realize I haven't exactly convinced you to go with either system, but know that either one should do a fine job if sized and installed properly. The installer is key. All in all, I think you'll get the most out of the Infinity system.

I have a quote for 2 2.5 Ton Trane variable speed with ductwork. It is a 2 story house requring separate systems for bottom and top floors. Although I think it's oversized at 2.5 tons each floor, the quote I have is $22.5K for both floors. This is basically 2 of your systems saying that my quote for 1 system would be around $11K. So I think you got a great price. I am in NY Metro area also. I will keep looking for more quotes... thanks for posting this.

a couple of questions and observations.

what size is your home? what size is existing condenser and furnace?

Both of these systems are dual fuel.

The Carrier is a three stg furnace with a two stg HP condenser.

The Trane is a two stg furnace with a sgl stg HP condenser.
The Trane furnace is smaller than the Carrier Furnace.

I personally think the Carrier system is a better choice but I would drop the furnace to a two stg VS furnace (MVB mdl)and request a price with the Performance 15 "H" mdl HP condenser and best matching evap coil application. You might save some bucks.

If you have just one return, I would add another to improve airflow and comfort and dampen down noise.

Some additional information:
House is single story 1775 square foot.
Existing unit is an electric 2 ton carrier AC unit (38TRA024320) with a 3 ton coil, failing and needs to be replaced.
Furnace is gas and 60K BTU's, working fine but is 11+ years old and if I replace it now I can get the tax credit.
Humidity has been a issue since I moved into the house 3 years ago.
Both the Trane and Carrier dealers felt the return was not enough and both felt that expanding the interface between the wall cavity and the unit in the crawl space would be enough.

After talking with the Carrier dealer today, for $700 additional I could add 10 years labor. He mentioned the warranty would be purchased by them through Carrier and it would be their company required to do the repairs. Carrier dealer also offered to put a return into the master bed-room at no additional cost.

Trane dealer stated that the Trane 803 is made by Honeywell and will control humidity via Comfort-R. Also mentioned that the 900 series is for the communicating XL20I furnace. Think I need to get a little smarter on the controllers.

Both dealers also indicated that their system would meet the $1500 tax credit.
(Need to check and see if reducing to the carrier two stage (vice three stage) furnace would still qualify for the tax credit)
