Actually, the Trane website's tax credit eligibility search does show the 4ton XT80 qualifying for the tax credit. I guess I was confused because the XT80 specs show ICS AFUE as 80. But I just realized that ICS stands for Isolated Combustion System and I guess the operative word is Isolated - so the spec of 80 is on this part isolated, not the efficiency within an entire system which could be higher.

I'm a complete newbie at this so I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could let me know if I'm looking at this all wrong or if I'm on the right track...

Trane's XT80 is an 80% eff single stg furnace with a special high eff motor but not variable speed.

It is possible on specific system configurations with the XR15 AC condenser to qualify for the tax credit. This will depend on the evap coil size/model.

Post all details of your quoted system including all mdl numbers or ask dealer to provide the AHRI matching number. This will confirm whether your system will quailfy for the tax credit.

The quote includes new plenums and transitions and adding dampers to supply lines.
Will reuse existing ductwork.

For a few hundred extra, he's given me the option to extend the ductwork just a few feet and suspend the units in the attic higher so you can walk under them. Right now, they block access to the rest of the attic (including the other unit). Do you think extending them by 3 or 4 feet would really cause any airflow problems?

Also, would you say the $5400 pricing is good for this or would you keep shopping around?

I'm kind of cash strapped right now (multiple remodel projects going on and didn't plan on replacing the ac this year but found out downstairs ac has coil rusted through so a major freon leak) so I'm just looking for the best price that still qualifies for the $1500 tax credit. I live in north TX so I think a 80% furnace will be good enough since our winters aren't too bad. Hope to see some savings in the summer since my current system is probably running around 9 SEER (old plus mismatched).

it should be noted that AC is a little light on cooling BTUs. what size is your home?

if sized correctly, a heck of a system with alot of bang for the buck.

what stat was quoted? what do you do about air filtration? you might consider a good 4-5" pleated filter media cabinet like the Honeywell 200 filter.

so your net price after tax credit is around 4 grand?

this is a first floor system with furnace located in attic?

sounds to me that you have a good dealer.

what about your lineset-new or old to be flushed?

My house is 2 stories and the first floor is 2000 sq ft and the 2nd is 2200 sq ft. This system is just for the 1st floor. It's an older home so even though it's a lot of sq ft, it doesn't have any high ceilings so volume of air is not as much.

The current system (when it had freon) did a good job of cooling all the rooms on the first floor and it's a 20 year old carrier 4 ton seer 10.

I'm not replacing the 2nd floor system right now (it still works) but I know I'll be replacing it in the next few years (if not next year).

He did mention a filter box would be on the end of the furnace that needs replacement every 6 months but I don't see it in the quote so I'll follow up with him to find out.

Yes, under 4 grand - and TX has an energy star tax free weekend coming up - need to see if this equipment qualifies - if so, no sales tax.

I was referring to thermostat that was quoted.

I do recommend that dealer check size of existing refrigerant lineset to see if it matches to new condenser. If it doesn't, this could lead to problems and as well as you will not achieve performance/eff capability for that condenser/evap coil pairing. I always prefer a new and correctly sized lineset particularly when going from an R22 to 410a refrigerant. But flushing when performed correctly is OK as long as the size is correct. Hope this has not confused you too much.

I do question the need for a four ton unit to cool 2000 sq ft. oversizing is never good idea.
