Did you know that the founder of Taco Bell passed away a week ago? I went to look for their hours and found this at their website.

Who knew that you could make a packet of sauce look sad- very poignant actually, to me anyway.

That is very poignant indeed. And I thought the sauce packet looked sad too. RIP Glen Bell. I now know where the "bell" came from.

Taco Bell is headquartered in the city I live in.

The company I worked for in 1973 was right next door to Taco Bell's headquarters. It was a small, modest Spanish style building on a street called Red Hill.

Many years later, when I worked for another company, Taco Bell had moved its headquarters to Main Street. It was walking distance from my office. It was a very nice high rise that had a great cafeteria open to the public. I used to eat lunch there about once a week. Excellent food, prices and ambiance.

A portions of one of my favorite films, Demolition Man with Sandra Bullock, Wesley Snipes and Sylvester Stallon was shot there. In this humorous futuristic movie, Taco Bell wins the only fast food contract and everyone covets a chance to dine there. The restaurant is quite elaborate with snooty waiters, candles and cloth tablecloths. Funny movie.

RIP Mr Bell. Thanks for thinking outside the bun.

I separate homemade tortillas (and other things I make and freeze - pancakes, French toast, waffles, sliced quick breads...) with rounds, squares, or rectangles of plastic. Works much better than waxed paper or parchment, and BTW, freezer paper worked better than those two when I used it to separate things, and the plastic sheets are reusable. I cut rounds out of the plastic tops from containers (lg. container of yogurt, oatmeal, lids on #10 cans of freeze-dried foods, etc.). And I've purchased thin plastic kitchen cutting sheets/boards (comes several sheets to a package at Wal-Mart in the kitchen-wares department, in a number of fun colors) and cut those into sizes I need using my guillotine paper cutter. Some I round the corners so they don't poke through the foil or plastic wrap used as wrapping material, or cut to fit plastic storage containers with rounded corners. Anyway, I have a 2-" flat container I have all different sizes and shapes in to meet my needs for separating things in the freezer. You can also separate the small corn tortillas into fold-top sandwich bags - 2 tortillas per bag - then pack them back into the original bag and toss them in the freezer. If you only need one tortilla, they snap apart easily when there are only two frozen together. If you want to separate large flour tortillas, there are still 1-gallon storage bags available that use a twist-tie, you can use for separating them. You can wash and reuse these bags a number of times. -Grainlady

My DH brought me to my first Taco Bell which was in Long Beach. We had just moved in, he took our only car to work as I scrubbed our apartment. We had no food in the place, so he came home to take me to lunch there. I thought I was in heaven with their basic taco. I still love their Taco Supremes, but I skip the sauce because they are too messy to eat already. Two Taco Supremes and a Dr. Pepper makes my favorite fast food lunch.

My city won't let you put it anywhere but THERE!!! It is taking up all of this space and I am trying to hide it. My other one (that the contractor threw out) was so much smaller. It is because it is heating and air conditioning I think. I just bought my furnace a few years ago, but because of the foundation it would have cost a fortune to put the vents, wires and everything in for a smaller one. I think they should at least paint them with camouflage so they look like part of the garden. Or have someone paint it Trompe-l'œil or make it look like a bush. There is only to fence around it or plant around it I guess. Why isn't anything simple? lol

Tacos can be kind of anything around here, depends on what's in the house and how many people are eating. Table is a taco bar and everyone can build as they will. I tend to like to build a salad on my plate. Then fill a tortilla or shell or two, maybe have a few chips, probably eat a bunch of it as a salad. Meats can be ground beef, shaved beef, steak, slow braised beef. Chicken that's sometimes cooked from cut up fajitas style, sometimes slow cooked and shredded. Pork and ham is usually slow cooked and shredded. Fish or shrimp tends to be quick cooked/seared or grilled. Pintos, black beans, and mayocoba beans- I cook those from dry and sometimes leave whole, sometimes mash up for refries. Sometimes shredded cheeses like cheddar or a jack, sometimes quesos, occasionally a cheese sauce. Chopped tomatoes, onions or green onions, shredded lettuce or other tender greens, lime wedges, sour cream, salsas or hot sauces, sometimes black olives. Avocado or guac. Shells and/or tortillas, sometimes hard corn sometimes soft, sometimes flour. Usually some tortilla chips, occasionally boats. Sometimes street corn, grilled or seared veggies, cole slaw, fried potatoes or sweet potatoes. Pickled jalapenos, pickled carrot salad, quick pickled red onions and radishes. Seasoned rices or rice and beans. Most of the time I'm seasoning from Tex-Mex, Central, and Northern South America. Sometimes I go more Jamacian or Cuban. I make my own taco seasoning or recipes for a lot of it. I also have a nice stash of seasonings ordered from Amigo foods for flavor profiles I might not have otherwise. If I'm going more Asian or Indian with it, a lot of the seasoning profiles and some of the fillings and extras change. Chapati/roti isn't exactly like a tortilla, but it's also not easy to find around here. During the summer I sometimes make "sushi tacos" for work lunches- cream cheese smear, packet tuna or whatever leftover cooked fish from last night I have in the fridge, white rice. Nasturtium leaves or other peppery leaves from the garden, green onions or sweet and sour onions, pickled edamame. Flour tortilla. And not exactly tacos, but around here... socca is used like soft tortillas too. Socca is a thin chickpea pancake. Usually socca is used with Mediterranean or Middle Eastern fillings and profiles. But the more usual fillings and profiles from the Americas work great too. And chickpea can be a nice alternative to corn or flour for some folks. Tacos I've had that I don't really make. Stewed goat was good, I like goat. Roasted lamb, not so much, but ground lamb like a kebab nug or moussaka filling is good. Duck was OK. Turkey can be OK, but often can be kind of the most boring of the meats. Venison was good, stewed and brisket kind of smoked style. Jackfruit is really good. Crab and lobster are OK, but there are better uses for those and I like fish tacos better. BBQ can be surprisingly good, especially using corn tortillas or shells for it.

Jodi, I like that movie too. I forgot about that Taco Bell being the only fast food, you're right, it was funny. Might rent that tonight now, actually! Thanks!

Just went to the TB website--doubt it had it before, but in addition to the sauce packet wording, a single bell tolls. Nice.

I go to TB very occasionally. Every time I do, when I look at the menu I feel that I should've brushed up on it on its website, cuz I never know what's in what (well, beyond the regular tacos).

But a co-worker still laughs at me knowing that the only Mexican food I've eaten comes from TB, and that I've never eaten "true" Mexican food.

When I was a teenager (MANY years ago) I worked at a Taco Bell. They paid better than the ice cream parlor. I don't know about now, but then the food was very fresh and just about everything was made onsite. The worst job was picking through the beans before they were cooked in enormous pressure cookers. The taco shells were fried twice daily, the cheese was grated, tomatoes sliced and lettuce cut daily. It might have been that particular store, but the place was kept spotless. The chain may have already been sold to Pepsico by then, but Mr. Bell certainly created a wildly successful business.

I never knew where the "Bell" name came from either, til now.

And I had my laptp muted, didn't hear the single bell toll.

Our TB is also very clean. Just ate there this morning with dh.

I love Taco Bell food. I can remember when I didn't like sour cream, until I had a Taco Bell Burrito Supreme, when they first came out (a very long time ago!).

When we lived in Lake Forest (not too far from where Jodi is), there was a Taco Bell "test" store near us. That's where they tested out new items, so we had all sorts of stuff on the menu that other Taco Bell locations didn't have....

I worked at the Taco Bell Restaurant Support Center (aka: Corp office) in Irvine for 5 years. It was a really fun place to work. One time they gave all employees a copy of Glen Bell's biography. It was very interesting. I think I still have it somewhere...

I'll stop there occasionally. Was there last night. Not surprised about his name in there, it's not uncommon, but I find corporate history to be quite interesting at times.

They're usually quite fast and efficient. It SHOULDN'T take long, but that's not always the case.

I started going there more when one GF had to get her weekly TB fix. Never knew why, but it was a regular thing. She yo quiroed Taco Bell. And I miss the big-eared little dog! Still laugh thinking about the here lizard, lizard, lizard commercial!
