Anyone else suffer from 'hypotrichosis' like me ?

While perusing this Sunday's Parade magazine, I noticed Brooke Shields in a big ad for a new medicine called Latisse. It's people for me, who have "inadequate or not enough eyelashes". Well, I never did have the thick, Southern-Belle-fluttering lashes like the stars have, but I never realized that I actually have "a condition", LOL. What diseases/ailments will the pharmaceutical industry think of next! I noticed that the side effects include: difference in direction of eyelash growth, eyelash growth if the solution gets elsewhere, and increased brown pigmentation of the iris. Yikers! No thanks, I'll keep my "condition" the way it is.

Deedee, when I first saw that commercial with Brooke, and heard the recitation of possible side effects, I thought, "No way! That's what mascara is for!" Why is applying mascara such a hardship all of sudden?

I have blue eyes & I don't want them turning partially brown! Eyelash growth elsewhere? Spare me the joy! Creepy.

And I bet Brooke Shields is even faking this condition, LOL. I've never thought of her to suffer from "inadequate" eyelashes, or inadequate anything.

I take the natural route as I have arthritis and I get costochondritis every so often (I am actually experiencing it right now myself). I control my inflammation with a very strict diet and supplements - I sort of fell off the wagon since Christmas and have now completely restricted all inflammatory foods. I feel so much better today than say, four days ago although I did go for a ski and was huffing and puffing more than usually due to the fact I can't expand my lungs as much as I needed to. It's a strict lifestyle but it is working for me and I am happier this way than when I was on medication:).

I wish I could give you some feedback, but I've never heard of them. Carla mentioned infrared products above; maybe she's heard some comment. I will say I didn't think much of their "Customer Message." A splint and surgery for Raynauds?? Makes no sense. Sounds like this person had carpal tunnel instead. Also, I question part of their claim: Far infrared rays gently penetrate the soft tissues of your hands and begin a number of therapeutic processes that lead to the rejuvenation of tiny capillaries, blood vessels, and nerves. This process helps to prevent and reverse the damaging effects of repetitive Raynauds attacks. I may be wrong, but I don't think the nerves get damaged. If they did, I wouldn't be in such acute pain every winter. It's tissue (and nails in their infancy) that gets damaged. In Raynaud's Syndrome, the capillaries shut down at a certain temperature. This temp can vary from person to person. I don't understand the "rejuvenation" they're talking about. Sounds like a snake-oil sales pitch to me, but again, I'm not an expert, even though dealing with the condition is a major issue for me. Dr. Andrew Weil recommmends 100mg of niacin twice a day for Raynaud's, and also 120 to 240mg of ginkgo. I've taken both, but rather randomly. I'll try a more regular dose next year--although today is ridiculously cold and windy. And rainy!

In answer to op question - yes, for years. For me its a situational type thing, brought on by events that trigger past trauma from childhood neglect &abuse. Also there is an element of physical/nutritional health involved....vitamin d deficiency is known to be a common cause or contributing factor to depression ... I know if I forget to take it within a few days I can feel myself slip-sliding back down into the hole again. There is new thinking that depression and other mental illnesses are inflammatory diseases and nutritional approaches that help inflammation can help depression ( maintain nutritious diet/supplements - no sugar or processed grains or harmful types of fats etc.) Oh yeah the therapy too... not like you ever forgive and forget, but its possible to learn new patterns/ways of being in the world and not just be on auto-pilot reacting to things out of that old childhood trauma and pain. So much more I could write but I ll leave it at that - theres no one magic fix, ev is so interrelated. Example: improving diet gets me in a place where I can feel like I can do excercise.... which also is known to help depression .... which then helps me get more motivated to cook better food and take better care of myself . Although I have never lived in one (and wouldn't want to), I have dealt with any number of HOA's in my capacity as a landscape designer. I have never encountered any issues with them signing off on my designs. Once they have the plan and plant list in hand, they can easily verify that nothing will exceed any height regulations or expand rampantly. I even had one with a 'must have lawn in the front garden' reg (ridiculous when the entry garden area is not much more than 150 square feet!) that agreed to its removal and replanting. I'd try it. Often when presented with a professional design plan, they cave :-) It is true that many HOA's have boards that consist of petty despots who like to throw their weight around to feel important and that some of the regs are arbitrary at best. My ex moved into one like that after we divorced and after butting heads a few times, got himself elected to the board and made the landscaping regulation changes he wanted and thought others would appreciate as well.

Ah, but it is an issue. The eyelashes help protect the eyes by catching dirt and dust that could get in. The help prevent eye infections. It is not just a cosmetic issue.

Les, if this is a treatment for people who actually have no lashes, this is a great thing. The pharmaceutical companies are not marketing it as such, though, but for purely cosmetic reasons. I would never begrudge anyone who has a legitimate medical issue their medicines. I was just poking fun in a harmless way (at myself, who has sparse lashes). It's still mascara for me though, as opposed to this medicine.

My son's allergist once told me that you could always spot a kid with allergies by his/her gorgeous long and thick eyelashes...

You can buy false eyelashes at Walmarts for $2.67 and they look fabulous. I know it sounds a little Tammy Fayeish but they look very natural. I wear them all the time!

When I did hair and makeup I used them quite a lot on clients.

Deedee, I wouldn't worry too much. La Jaconde (Mona Lisa) doesn't have eyelashes or eyebrows. No one seems to hold it against her!

My DH's family has double eyelashes. Me? One eye has lashes that curl, the other eye has lashes that stick straight out.

I swear, my Italian DH and all of his extended family have severe allergies. Maybe people with allergies develop long eyelashes to keep pollen, etc. out of their eyes?

Golddust, I have the same thing, one set of eyelashes have the curl to them while the other's are straight. I figured out why. It's because I sleep on my right side more, which is the side my eyelashes curl, so the pillow's doing it! I never have to curl those eyelashes. lol

golddust, thanks, I guess that's what sweeby was referring to, that people with allergies might grow longer thicker lashes because they need a better filter to keep irritants out.
