Would you like to write a memoir for your descendants?

I'm reading a book, How to Write Your Own Life Story, by Lois Daniel. It's written for inexperienced, perhaps even timid, nonprofessional writers--and this certainly doesn't describe me. But her step-by-step approach is so easy that it has given me the push I needed to write my life story--not to get published, but to leave behind for my descendants. I thought some of you might be interested in doing the same.

In the beginning, the author writes about the important role diaries and personal reminiscences play in piecing together history. She says:

Now this is where I'm going to, as the kids say, "lay a guilt trip" on you if you happen to be thinking that writing your stories will be too much trouble. In one of the (Oregon) trail diaries a woman wrote the following:

I didn't write in my diary yesterday. I hate to miss a day, but I just couldn't do it yesterday. It was dark by the time we found a place to camp and both George (her husband) and I were too tired to build a fire to melt the ink.

Another woman wrote:

The color of the ink in my journal will be changing all the time from now on. I thought I brought enough ink for the entire journey, but have completely run out. From now on I'm going to pick berries and squeeze the juice out of them and use it for ink. The color of my writing will depend on the kind of berries I'm able to find.

So here we sit at our computers in the year 2011. It should be easy for us, right? Right!! I started my memoir last week. If anyone would like to join me, I'll be happy to share Lois Daniel's "assignments" (chapter suggestions and memory triggers) with you. Just say the word.......
