The only time I "hand write" a recipe is if I'm in the doctor's office and see one in a magazine in the waiting room. And I don't use paper, but "write" it on my Palm IIIC. Then I later sync with my computer and copy and paste it into a word document to save on the computer. I still HAVE recipes on cards that I use, but even those I've typed or scanned as WORD or pdf documents. That way I know I'll never lose them. And I don't have to worry about ruining a recipe by staining it with sauce or getting water on it. Just print a new one. Easier to share that way too.

I prefer to come to my PC and type them in. I have a recipe folder, with sub folders in it, as in breakfasts, meat dishes, veggies, soups, etc etc

I can read my typing a WHOLE lot better than my writing. :)

I have an extensive file of 3 X 5 recipe cards, that I've been growing for over 35 years. I still add recipe to it--mostly they're recipes that are tried and true, that I use repeatedly.

However, more often, these days, I put my new recipes into a very organized folder/files in my laptop. That way, I have them with me, easily accessible, regardless of which house I'm at.

But those aren't my only recipe locations--LOL!. I have one notebook full of old contest entries (that ones about 20 years old), and another of my contest-winning recipes. And I have many, many, many files on my computers, on my portable harddrive, on my flash drive, and on disks of original recipes that I've sent to contests over the years. I catalogue them all carefully, so it's easy to put my finger on any recipe I need quickly. I think that's really the key to ANY storage system--you need to have a good index so you can quickly and easily locate any recipe you need.

Well, my computer is upstairs and my kitchen is down and it is too much trouble to be going up and down for a recipe most of the time. I do have recipes on my computer and do refer to them at times or print them off again. I just like to have things downstairs. I can pretty much remember which notebook my recipes are in. Do you print your recipes off of your computer when you need them or how do you know what you need as you bake or cook?

I have a computer file for my recipes also, I back up once a week to be sure I don't lose them. It's very easy to "clean out" my recipes that way and easy to find them also.

I love it that I can then print one out, tape it to the cabinet door above my prep area to refer to as I cook and then throw it away and yet always be able to get a fresh copy easily and instantly.

But, when I'm gone I don't think that my grandkids will get nearly the pleasure out of my files as I did from my grandmother's /great grandmothers handwritten recipes which I have carefully saved.

Maybe I should handwrite some of my very most favorites.

But the, perhaps the future readers will wonder why I handwrote would could have been so easily filed on computer *LOL*

I have a journal (it was called "Write your own book" back in the 80's! that I write my recipes in. the messier the page the more used the recipe. My daughters are fighting over who gets it when I die!!! They have copied most of the recipes. Mostly it's only ingredients. deb

I never hand write a recipe anymore. I always type it or copy straight from the website. Then it gets trimmed of excess paper and I put it in one of those full sized magnetic photo albums. Easy to wipe the pages clean if you drip something too.

If I find a recipe that I am not sure we are going to like, then I scribble it down on a 4" x 8" tablet. I rarely write what the food is...just the ingredients. And I usually just put the ingredients and not the amounts. Don't know why. I guess I would just put in the amounts I wanted anyway, so don't need the amounts. Funny thing is, my DS can tell what the recipe is for, just by looking at my notes. I need to write them down for my boys. I do have a 3 ring binder that I keep recipes in that I have actually typed in and printed. So, I am not all that bad about it. :)

I don't cook that often from a recipe, other than the one that is in my head. I hear my grandma in me when someone asks for a recipe. "I take about a cup of this, add 2 of that..." That is how she would tell us a recipe when we asked. I would get so frustrated...and now I am that person. Fortunately, my DS can go along with it. DH? Not a chance.

I write them on whatever piece of paper is handy at the time. LOL Sometimes I write them in a book I have. Usually though if I find a recipe on the forum it is written on the back of an envelope or napkin.

I can't find a printer that is compatible with this computer of mine but if I could I would most likely print up recipes or use a recipe programme of some sort.

I throw my recipes in the drawer that holds my tin foil and plastic wrap and sometimes it is hard trying to find the recipe I want. I think I should get back to writing them in a book so at least I will know where they are when I need them. LOL

Marilyn, I use my laptop and take it to the kitchen when I'm cooking, so I can refer to it. I don't print off recipes unless absolutely necessary anymore. In the past 2 years, I've REALLY cut back on my use of excess computer paper. It's just not necessary, and I've been trying to be a little conservative on that front. Because I work right from my laptop (I'm careful to set it up out of the line of fire--or spatter, as the case may be--LOL), I can revise recipes as I go, if I find they need to be updated. I can also work back and forth between old family favorites and the contest recipes I'm developing, so it just makes things easier for me to work from the computer.

I use recipe cards but they are getting harder and harder to find. I also keep a large file on my computer.

I have had a couple stored in my brainie for years and years!
Turning 70, so I guess I better write them down somewhere.

Glenda, do write them down. I have a notebook that is all taped together that holds my grandma's best loved recipes. They are all written in her sister's hand and it is absolutely one of my most prized possessions.
