I think either way would look good. I would be more worried about the black & brown combo. If you are ok with it, than go with it. Do you want a black and white kitchen? It might seem cold. Having something warmer on the island might warm up the space.

We did two stones in our previous home and the kitchen was slightly smaller than yours (but open to the family room). The perimeter was Crema Bordeaux and the island (4' x 5') was Nordic Black Antique. The cabinets were all the same (a dark cherry). We loved it.

I think it will look nice. When I see kitchens like that, it always makes me wonder if the owner loves to bake...and that's why there's a marble island. For some reason, I immediately think of chocolate chip cookies :)

I'm pondering the same question with my island (36"x68") & relatively small kitchen. I also want something different on the island. I think different materials are fine, especially if your cabinets/island base are the same material/color.

cabs are all white. Yes, Teschertile, I am a bit concerned about it being too cool. I think I was hoping to use a diff stone on island to keep it from being too cold. If I don't have much luck finding a remnant piece, I may have to go with all the same countertop. Which BM paint is considered a warm gray?

We just painted our living room & family room Wheeling Neutral. We considered Pewter Revere. PR is a greige & it's warm. You might want to look into a beige-gray to warm up the space. Ou really have to insider undertones when dealing with grays. I considered another gray or the living room and the sample looked very purple on the wall. It was a huge fail, even though I loved the color card square.

Mags - our kitchen is slightly bigger than yours but sounds similar with white cabs. We did 2 different stones as you describe. You can see pics and more info in my reveal thread.

Threegraces kitchen is pretty, but it reads very cool/cold to me. Some people love cool/cold, so it's not a bad thing. It gives you a very good look at what you are thinking about though. If you want to go warmer, I would consider some different tones.

I don't get very much sunlight (it's eastern) in my kitchen, especially this time of year. I'm planning on white dove for cabs, as opposed to my original color of simply white. The dark cocoa flooring is a given since it is sitting in our dining room waiting for install. My lights will prolly be in the 3000k range vs the typical 2700k. So I have a lot pointing to cool. I'll check out the beige grays. Thanks.

Hopefully I can find a marble or quartzite remnant that work with soapstone.

Mags, just be aware that 3000 is still pretty warm lighting.
