Plumbing Design Dilemma Kitchens

Kitchen Faucet and Hole Size - Delta 1-3/8" and Moen 1-1/2"

I need some help with kitchen faucets and the hole required for installation. Delta's requirement is 1-3/8" diameter and Moen's requirement is 1-1/2" diameter. I'm not sure which one to get and which hole diameter choice would be the conservative choice.

1. If a 1-1/2" hole is cut, can a Delta product be installed now or later? Maybe with some kind of material to thicken up the Delta faucet? I'm assuming cutting a 1-3/8" hole will not work the other way in that i won't be able to fit a Moen product EVER in a 1-3/8" hole.

2. I have read on here that Delta is 1-3/8" +/- 1/4" but i haven't been able to find this "+/- 1/4"" measurement anywhere in Delta faucets specs. Anyone see this +/-1/4" spec"

3. I have heard that Delta faucets are built with more brass or steel whereas Moen has more plastic. I know both are good brands but is this true? Or do people's results vary and they are both similar products in the grand scheme of faucets.

4. I have read somewhere that a heavier faucet has more brass/steel therefore weight is a good indicator of durability. Myth or truth?

Get the larger hole, it will work fine for either faucet. Moen makes several lines of faucets at different price points, the more you spend the higher quality it will be (generally).

I've installed hundreds of faucets (Delta and Moen) and have never drilled a 1 1/2" hole to do so. I see no reason to start, however, if the escutcheon on a replacement faucet doesn't cover a 1 1/2" hole, or worse yet, covers it and doesn't make a seal, leaks and problems ensue.

Like most things in life, you'll get what you've paid for. Stick with any of the major brands and spend a little.

We got one of the delta's touch20 for an adjoining powder room. We have had nearly every part replaced and have yet to get it to function with touch less feature! Responsive support hotline but still not functioning. We may have to eat the cost of it since it was purchased prior to jan demo. Ugh! (We need touch less since we raw feed our dog). My DH refuses to chalk it off as a loss at this point, so he has his own little project to focus on. :-)

You must have a really big sink, Sylvia. The dimensions you mention are the same for mine EXCEPT that's the space above the BIG bowl. Are you measuring inside edge of small sink bowl to middle of bridge??? If you truly have 16 inches of space above the small bowl, then the measurements for spacing holes sound about right. Mine, above the big bowl (I wanted them there and know is not the normal place where people put them) are spaced this way: Center of faucet hole is even with center of bridge. Then airgap is set (center of hole to center of hole) 8-1/2" away, then soap dispenser is set (center of airgap hole to center of soap dispenser hole) 5-1/2" away from airgap.

You could call Moen's customer service and ask them about their faucet hole size. Why are you married to a Moen faucet? You can pick a different brand than Moen, and just cross this concern off your list. [ETA: I just realized this is a 2-1/2-year old thread. Not sure why Nkhoma resurrected it since the OP must have solved her faucet dilemma by now.]

Not what you asked, but are you sure you need an air gap? Are you in California? Your name doesn't indicate that. I think California is the only state left that requires an air gap (maybe Maine too). That's because dishwashers today come with a "high loop" hose installed, so that you don't need an air gap. If your name means you are in Wisconsin, Wisconsin does not require an air gap. Please refer your plumber to WI Code which describes the requirements for a "below-counter air gap", i.e. a high loop installation on your DW. If you are in California, what many people in California do is have the air gap installed for the inspection (if you are having one), and then replace the air gap with a soap dispenser. If you decide to do that, you won't need 3 holes, just 2. For spacing, my single-hole faucet is centered over the sink, and my soap dispenser in on the right, 8" on center from the faucet center. Standard hole size for faucets is 1-3/8". I'd actually never heard there were different hole sizes than that.

Jospeh OK so what you're saying is drill a 1-3/8" hole? I don't know if the hole has to do with the escutcheon ring or the width of the hose/tube of the faucet. That's where my confusion comes in. If the Moen "hardware" can slide through the 1-3/8" hole then great.

The spec sheets of all these Delta faucets (for example) say they can fit in a range of hole diameters:

- Lenta
- Linden

We are down to these 3 i think:

1. Delta Leland, requires 1-3/8" diameter hole ($297 CDN)

I think we are leaning towards the Delta. We like the 1"+ more reach on the faucet and Delta seems to get slightly better reviews or shall i say fewer 1 star reviews. I know that reviews are sometimes a crapshoot but i bought (plan to return) the Moen Kaden and the Delta Marca to see what the finish, reach, heights are of each and the Delta feels sturdier. Hope it lasts.

It's a 14" overhang with 3 stealth brackets/supports underneath. The way the picture is taken, the island looks much larger than it is but it isn't a shallow island either. 84" x 56".

If that's 3cm engineered stone, no additional supports are necessary.
