I saved money on home heating this past winter!!!

I have two corn stoves in my house, and they work great! I got both of them from Pinnacle Corn Stoves this past winter. I installed the Ruby model myself in the fireplace in my den, and it only took about 45 minutes. Piece of cake. The Emerald model heats my workshop cheaply and efficiently. When I had a question about the installion, I called them up, and they were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I recommend them highly!!!

With the price of corn just about doubled these days, the attractiveness of the corn burner might only be the flame.

You may have saved money on what used to be your primary heating method, but with an expenditure of $4,000.00 for two corn burners plus whatever the corn costs you per year, you are definitely NOT going to save as much as would have if you had installed $4,000.00 worth of DIY insulation in your home.

I am not being mean when I say most people that use stop gap measures in a moment of panic, such as high heating bills have caused have lost their minds, albeit temporarily.

If you had the chimney flues to accommodate the corn burners, you should have bought coal burners which cost less to purchase and less to feed.

Of course, I am giving you the benefit of the doubt that you are not a corn stove salesman with a huge surplus of unsold inventory.

What do you mean by telling the oil nozzle guy to not reduce his pump pressure. One hundred pound of pressure would have given him what he wanted. Has something changed since I got out of the field?

Forgot to add that he saved us money by incorporating all of our needs and many wants without going over in sq footage. He also came up with architectural details that would give the house character very inexpensively. He loaded us up on storage and made the most use out of stadard windows. Also incorporated brick and stone with hardi in a way that kept the expense down but provided a huge visual impact. It is also unique from the other houses in the neighborhood and area, but still blends nicely so that if we ever resale we will standout among the homogenous designs most builders put up in our area. So that will payoff later. I have had someone on my hoa with a house significantly bigger than mine rave over the design and wish she could move in. Also he could have...but we chose not to do this... make it so the first floor was the only floor finished so that we could finish the second and basement later without anyone being the wiser. However we lost our minds and now are finishing the whole basement.

You'll recoup your investment this winter, but in the long run, it's probably going to cost you much more than you save. If you have wooden sash, you'll probably end up getting condensation trapped between the film and the window and after just a year or 2, you're going to have a lot of rotted wood to replace. I speak from experience. Some years ago, DH thought he was doing a 'good' thing when he sealed our windows to insulate against heat loss. Sure, we saved a few pennies that winter, but we ended up having a lot of repair work to do instead--replacing wood on the windows, and dealing with the mold that resulted. It's also a health issue--houses aren't supposed to be air-tight. That creates a very unhealthy situation, and is when you can have problems with gasses like radon or carbon monoxide building up. Everything in life is a trade-off. Keep an eye on the situation, and if you see a lot of moisture building up, you're going to want to take care of the problem promptly, before you end up having to (expensively) replace wood or whole windows. We no longer seal everything up tight--no film, no rope caulk. Doesn't make that much difference in the bill and we are careful in other ways, so we don't waste the electric we're paying for. I know our house is healthier, and I believe we are, too.

I'm not sure I'll be much help on this subject since I'm just now decluttering and reorganizing my home. Here's a few little things I'm doing: Since I don't have a regular pantry (I'm going to make one somewhere, someday--lol) I keep all breakfast items in one drawer, like instant oatmeal, grits, hot chocolate, etc. So, I know in a glance what I need and don't buy extras. I just tear off the top of the pkg. and set the whole thing in the drawer. I also keep my ironing supplies on one drawer---irons, spray starch, etc. I actually had to buy a second iron because I couldn't find the first one---before I organized! I took all on my junky paper and cut it into note size, put it in my desk drawer. If I have pretty junky mail, or envelopes, I cut them up to use as gift tags or small note cards. I hate frying bacon, so I bake it now on a rack. It's healthier and I don't have to spend so much time at the stove. I actually baked a pkg. this morning, used it all at once---now, we have bacon for tomorrow. I don't have very many closets, so I'm using decorative tins and hatboxes (I went thru a hatbox-making phase a few years back) for storage of sewing and craft supplies, and anything else that I can't find a place for!!! LOL These things hold a lot, so I may not have to buy any shelves. In my foyer area, I have a narrow table with a mirrow above it. I just cleaned out that drawer in the table----I have a place for car keys (his & hers), gloves, hairbrush, and glasses. Since I wash my hands a zillion times a day, I keep either an old dish detergent bottle or shampoo bottle with soap, water (*and now hand lotion or baby oil mixed in) under the sink to wash hands with. I just saw a Dr. on Tv say that if you wash your hands too much and they're dried out, germs can enter your body thru the cracked dry skin EASIER!! They were talking about the flu viruses. He actually said that rubbing your hands back and forth, creating friction, would kill germs on your hands!! Rub your hands, rub your hands!!!!!!

How many inches of spray foam to you plan to install? It would need to be a higher R value in order to lower the heating load. Spray foam is great for sealing air leaks. But a good well installed moisture barrier would also stop air leakage, but perhaps not as well. Get estimates for both. If the price difference is small then go with the spray foam.

- Yep, I did too. It was a mild winter on the East Coast except for Feb. I used a lot of firewood that I had scavenged to suppliment the heat pump.

- You are being very generous, FP. He does indeed sound like a corn stove salesman.

FP, oil pump pressures vary today from 100-150#. Turning down the pressure to 100# would have equaled a smaller nozzle size, but then you have issues with atomization.

The best way to check is with the Bacarac kit.

I know the results of less pressure, but are you telling me they are using larger and less precise sintered strainers in the nozzles these days that require high pressure to atomize.

The guy got the furnace for free and I don't believe the lower output would cause condensation in the heat exchanger itself.

As far as condensation in the chimney, he could make that determination in the first season of heating and sleeve it as necessary.

Like I have said in past posts, when I went to school the standard pressure was 100psi and we were warned to not go over 120psi for fine tuning and to a larger orifice nozzle if we needed output we couldn't get at 120psi.

fairyprincess, oil technology has come a long way. 100 PSI is almost a thing of the past.

Well people don't use whale oil in lanterns anymore to light their home. Bathrooms are no longer 100 feet behind the house. Chickens and salt pork are no longer considered fair payment for services rendered. The wash board is all but a decoration on the wall now. Doctors have to actually go to school now. And indifferences are no longer solved by 2 men walking off 20 paces then yelling "draw"! Did you know that farmers are outstanding in their field? :-)

The condensation would be in the flue from low stack temps. But if the Bacarac gave good results, why not go smaller? I really don't think it's going to make alot of difference anyway.

How about my Ducane question???
