My "Mama" Movie Review

I saw the TV ads for this movie, they looked interesting. Plus I was looking for a pleasant afternoon out, away from my "caregiver" responsibilities. So, with hubby's blessing, I went to the $4 for "seniors" movie theatre. I liked the movie, very good and creepy, lots of atmosphere and shadows. Good acting by the two actresses playing the children.Jessica Chastain was just okay.The "ghost" was very creepy and bad. I did not like the way it ended but I did enjoy the suspense and build-up. I won't post more details of the plot. I don't want to give things away. Not Oscar material by any means. But go see it if you like a few chills and maybe one "jump out of your seat" moment.

What is the name of the movie? It sounds like a good "escape," which is why I go to the movies!

The movie is worth seeing for Streep's performance. She accurately captures the endearing goofiness of Julia, even down to the awkward body language and that weird voice that sometimes would drift into an unmodulated screech. Stanley Tucci is excellent as well. I found the structure of the movie a tad strained, though. Putting those two stories together--well, the parallels seemed artificially strained at times, or at the very least unbalanced. The portion of the movie dedicated to the lives of a couple of struggling NYC yuppies just isn't as interesting as the story of a diplomat and his feisty wife (who will soon revolutionize American cuisine) living in postwar Paris. If the Streep scenes are fresh figs and Sauternes, the NYC scenes are Fig Newtons and skim milk. And, when the movie drifts away from cuisine into some political/social commentary, it does so in Hollywood's typical preachy hectoring tone. But that's a minor cavil. Fred Astaire movies weren't known for consistency and logical plots, either, but they were enjoyable. Have a glass of decent bubbly before the show and enjoy this confection. As Julia would say, "Bon..." oh, you know the rest.

I think Gran Torino got bad reviews also, but I loved it. What was funny/strange, though, was the fact that after the movie was over, no one moved...everyone stayed seated while Clint Eastwood sang that song...and he's no singer. I know someone else who went at another time, and he is the one who brought up the fact that no one made a move to leave after the movie was over...usually people get up and try to be the first ones out the door :o)

TV-wise I liked the first Bewitched set (which had a fire?)...it was relatively sophisticated and had a Wegner Papa Bear chair. It slowly got transformed into a kind of hokey JC Penney "colonial" set. I also liked the set on Hazel, but "Missy" was an interior decorator, so you would expect that to be nice. It was kind of icy in a 60s way.

I want to see this movie but not till the kids comes home. Alex and I were going to meet yesterday and watch a movie. We chose Silver Linings Playbook but he fell asleep and stood me up. I drove all the way to Lexington and he didn't show up. He's been having sleep issues lately so I figured that's what happened...anyway, way before that I told him I wasn't watching anything scary because I had to come home to an empty house. I love scary movies but they freak me out.

The movie I was going to see yesterday is now playing at the theater near here so I may go see it this afternoon by myself.

I am the first to admit I am a scaredy cat! I value my sleep too much to watch horror movies!

Just the way she whispers "Mama" is too much for me!

Well, we just got back from watching it. Didn't like the ending and we all thought Mama looked stupid. But it was scary. Well, everyone but Alex thought it was scary, he just thought it was dumb. He wanted to see the other movie, but I saw it early today by myself.

Even Lauren got freaked out and it's hard to scare her.
