Movie review - No Country for Old Men...

DH and I saw it last night. I think it's up for an Oscar. Neither of us could figure out why. It was an okay movie - we hated the ending and did not understand it at all. If anyone has seen it and understood the ending, please explain.

I've never heard of it before. I'm going here shortly to see Vantage Point. It looked good on the previews.

Had thought about seeing it, but in the ratings it said VIOLENT, and I just cannot go to a movie anticipating the bad stuff.

pidge, I started another thread with info regarding sleep apnea and CPAP. Seems like I hijacked your movie season thread. LOL Like your friend, I feel the CPAP device is a real pain in the yang but it beats having a stroke or heart attack during sleep. During my testing in the hospital I stopped breathing 32 times an hour. An apnea episode has to be no breathing for a minimum of 10 seconds. Among other symptoms, many times I would wake up with my head feeling like it was about to explode...SEVERE headache. The sleep doctor said it was due to lack of oxygen. Many sleep apnea sufferers have strokes and heart attacks during sleep due to lack of oxygen. Oh, yeah...I told ya. My fingers don't know when to shut up. Now, I'll go to the new thread. It is boring reading but I hope it can enlighten someone who may suffer from this or have a loved one that may.

A one-night-stand would qualify as a "sexual relationship" with a younger OR older man. I wanted to clarify, and wasn't interested in anyone's 'one night.' "On the first visit, his Mother introduced me as her daughter-in-law!" He moved back to DK and had told his entire family about me/us, and obviously the word 'marriage' came up. I don't find this odd at all. "It will be 2 years in Oct. since I last saw him on his 'summer visit' and we had a wonderful dinner." Did I ever insinuate *he* wasn't having sex? As far as i'm concerned he *still is* a free man who I just happen to be in love with. Many women equate sex as love. Many men equate sex as sex, and that includes married men who stray, but still love their wife. I never had expectations of him 'holding out', nor will I until we've come to a decision where this is going, if anywhere. "There *will* be a relationship first, as we still probably don't know each other as well as we should. " I never implied we *didn't* have a sexual relationship. mrsmarv, I myself am very cautious, and have 'feelers' for people or situations. Maybe i'm too close to this one to have inclinations 'there's something more behind this', but i'm not one who thinks negatively, either. "at the beginning of our relationship I asked if he's *sure* he's straight and not gay or a homosexual. We've talked about it very openly..." We were having dinner in an area known for having a large number of gays living there. As we were walking back to the car, a man turned around and checked out his ass. He also, very openly, said it had happened in DK also. I have a son who is gay, and also worked with 2 gay men where I was last employed. Out of curiosity I asked my son's opinion, and he immediately said his 'gaydare' wasn't picking up signs. The two men I worked with, and introduced him to, said absolutely not. He not a big man, is attractive, and has a nice physique, and these may be physical characteristics certain gay men look for, but not all. Not to be too suggestive, or blatant, but there have never been any suggestions of anything other than normal sex. Bisexual? Anything's a possibility, but one may also have a preference if that's the case.

Great thread! I was the only girl with 2 brothers, so I spent a lot of growing up time with "the boys". They always called me dramatic and irrational and I think hysterical a time or 2 lol! Come to think of it, they still do. Ol Joyful: Your post almost made me cry, about how proud you are to be a Canadian (here! here!) yet you almost feel sorry for others who were born to countries less fortunate than ours. At least once a week (or more) and when I watch the news I thank God for placing me, right here - the true north proud and free! And that makes me emotional - so then I switch the channel to the Big Bang Theory so I won't get all blubbery. Ron, I like the how you described "the boxes". Oh my gosh, that is so true. So many times I've asked my DH what he was thinking, when he kind of stares mindlessly off into the abyss. And he says "Nothing". Nothing? That's impossible not to think of anything. I've tried it and I just can't do it. All the while he's going to his Man Cave. lol I would love to be able to do that. But as you said, our minds are like nets, with nowhere to hide lol. Now if only we could insert a man's brain with a GPS we women would get less agitated with them when we're on road trips! lol j/k And women could get a switch to shut off the emotions, or a dimmer switch so we could at least tone them down, we'd all get along better! :-) BJ

Without giving away what is special and different about it, I found it to be amazing and very moving. It's a documentary, of sorts. There's a theme but not a story. The "extra" segment shown after the credits was eye-opening and very worth staying for. At the showing I went to, everyone stayed to watch it and applauded after that segment.

DH has a copy of it from his membership in Screen Actors Guild. He gets copies so he can vote in the Oscar recognitions. I will watch it this week perhaps. Will see if I can figure it out. He says they are all "dark" movies this year with "Juno" being the exception. I don't like dark movies, soooooo I will have to be in the mood to watch.

Angela, dh watched it last night and said the exact same thing as you. Says he still doesn't even know why he finished watching it.

I watched "Sydney white" today. It was a cute movie. And dd and I both loved "Juno".

I watched Sydney White yesterday and loved it. No Reservations with Catherine Zita Jones is a must see too. It is very cute.

I read the book and loved it. I don't think I'll see the movie anytime too soon. Once I read the book I tend to like to keep my ideas about what the characters looked like in my imagination.

Very violent, and I didn't really understand the end. Who was running from the motel to the truck? What happened to the drug money ? What was Javier Bardem doing in that closet? And what happened after he broke his arm? Does the book explain it fully? My library has it.

Jannie - The mexican guy that helped the mom with her bags at the airport was part of the bad guys and he got all the info from her as to where they were going, staying, etc. just in casual conversation. They went to the motel and killed that guy and they took the money and they were running from the motel to the truck.

I want to see it, but haven't yet. I've heard really good things about it and I love the Coen Brothers (directors) and also really like Cormac McCarthy (who wrote the book).

The Mexicans didn't get the cash, they killed Llweyen and ran. Chigur (the freaky guy) went to the hotel and got the money out of the air vent. He know that Llweyen used it as his hiding place because of the last hotel and the scratch marks inside the vent. He used some of the money to pay off the kid for his shirt. I didn't like the ending either. I didn't want to see the movie because of the violence and the "bad" ending, but I have to admit, I am a little haunted by it.

I read a detailed synopsis on one of the Spoiler web sites and I wouldn't waste my $$ going to see it. I do like the spoilers since knowing the ending doesn't ruin it for me I like to know what to expect.

I liked the movie a lot. I love the Coen brothers..They're kinda quirky. But it was a dark movie.
