Came across this book yesterday while looking for something else and got a good chuckle out of a couple of the entries -

Table Manners

Ever been to a White House dinner? Few of us have, but it's an occasion certainly for one to mind one's p's and q's.

This same thought was on the minds of several Vermont friends of Calvin Coolidge as they dined one night with the President. The dinner passed uneventfully until coffee was served.

President Coolidge poured his coffee into his saucer, so the guests did the same. Coolidge added cream and sugar, so the guests did the same. Then Coolidge leaned over and gave his to the cat!

A rummage sale will be held in the Parish Hall Saturday the 27th of September from 10 til 3. This is a chance to get rid of anything that is not worth keeping but is too good to throw away. Don't forget to bring your husbands!

Why would he try to make his cat sick? I don't get it. Cat can't digest cow milk properly. Coffee for a cat? Sugar? That concoction could kill a cat. Why was a cat running around in a formal dining room while people were eating?

If he was just trying to make fun of his guests I think that is cruel and stupid for a president to do such a thing. A lot of guests dining at the White House would not know American custom or even be familiar with the foods, just as he would not if he was having tea service in Japan or eating sushi or any thing that is done for dinner service in any of a number of countries.

Lavender, I suspected a small bedroom as well. There's a strange "door" situation in that area of the house that's hard to explain... Basically, if you had walked down the stairs to the 1st floor, you'd have been faced with 3 doors. (?). The door to the outside, & an interior door on each side. (The "bathroom" door, and a door to the "den"). We can see where the hardware was removed from the trim. I had researched (Polk Directory) back to abt 1913, (had to stop there, got busy & haven't been back to library for while) a doctor was listed at this address @ that time - I've joked to DH that our bathroom was his "office", lol! (Thus the 3rd entrance, and the extra door closing it off from the rest of the house). Doc's niece was listed as tenant for a bit, attending the college a block over - a "boarding" situation would probably make more sense. (Not a better story, tho'!). :-) The closet is "new", most walls on 1st floor are. (Framing & all, grr!). I doubt the wall between LR & bedroom wouldve been angled like this, either. (Made a larger, more "mod" living rm, yuck!). The small room off the kitchen was a laundry/utility room when we moved in. Now it's a pantry/utility room. (Nowhere else to put the big dang furnace & water heater!). One "original" use I've considered is a "butlers pantry", which didn't seem to require a butler even back then. The trap-door to the cellar is there, makes using the room tricky.

Hope Chest?

I was given one as a high school graduation gift from my parents (along with a set of luggage... think they were trying to tell me someting?) Some of my mom's sisters gave me household things for HS graduation, set of baking pans, some towels. My hope chest stayed at home and really did hold that stuff while I was in college. Last couple years of college, I took the towels and baking pans to my apartment. I didn't take the hope chest until DH and I had been married a year or so and into a big enough apartment to bring it. (My parents were moving then too, so I had to take all my stuff still at home.) Now my hope chest hold memories: yearbooks, grad cap/gown from HS and college, my diploma is in there! My wedding gown is also there, the cake server used at the wedding, a scrapbook I made in brownies. A journal I kept when pregnant w/ DS#1. All sorts of stuff, it's fun to go through on a rainy day. It sits in my bedroom, and also holds piles of various stuff. LOL. Now that I think about it, I guess it's more important to me that I thought. Maybe I'll plan to get DD one at about the same age.

Spitfire, pretty much my entire family is like that, very frugal Yankees. Furniture, rugs, lamps, etc. were/are only replaced when they get too ratty and worn-out to keep using, or broke and couldn't be repaired. Grandparents grew up in the Great Depression - both sets of grandparents married when the men came back from WWII, saved up and built modest houses around 1950. Pretty much everyone in the family just didn't have the money to be redecorating just because something was no longer considered "stylish". So a bedroom might still have 50-year-old wallpaper on the walls because it wasn't scraped or gouged or badly faded, so there wasn't any point in buying new paper. Although I do remember both grandmothers having very up-to-the-minute-for-1950 bathrooms, one had the robin's-egg blue fixtures complete with the metal-legged console sink and matching tile and the other had goldenrod yellow fixtures, but neither one would have dreamed of remodeling just to change the colors even though the style mavens considered them outright horrible thirty years later. I think a lot of it rubbed off on me, because I see little point (for me) in my decor having to constantly be "fresh" and "updated", it simply doesn't matter to me - I would just like to get things finished and be able to go on to other things to spend my money on. ;-) Practicality also trumps style in a big way in our house. We recently purchased a sectional (wow, brand new furniture, woowoo, but I'd been watching CL for quite a while to no avail) for the most effective use of space in our small, awkwardly-designed living room and I chuckled at the saleslady's comment that although of course you could still BUY them, sectionals were very "out", and we really should be getting a sofa-and-loveseat... even though that's what we were getting RID of because it wasted precious space! (DH and I bicker lovingly over the corner spot. Wonderful place to nest with lots of pillows and a warm blanket.) ljwrar, I would do any number of horrible things :-) for the kind of original features in your house, since my ca. 1900 house was almost completely stripped. Treasure them! If you replace the original light fixtures, wrap them well in acid-free paper, box them up carefully, and store them for a future owner to put back if they wish.

Vee, do you recall The Missing Will & A Dubious Codicil: A Double Autobiography by Michael Wharton? I finished it a week or so ago after noticing on the flyleaf where I had penciled in your name and the date 7 May 2006, probably because you reviewed it or at least mentioned it. Apparently, it took me more than eleven years to eventually get around to reading it! I should have suspected that Wharton had a wry, tongue-in-cheek style when I saw the title of the first chapter, "The Deformative Years." I wound up enjoying the second part, A Dubious Codicil, more than the first part because it covered the years he worked in Fleet Street writing the Peter Simple column for The Daily Telegraph (1957-1987, three or four times a week). Then he wrote a weekly column for the Sunday Telegraph for several years in the 1990s and then back to The Daily Telegraph for a weekly contribution. His last piece appeared there in January 2006, the month he died at age 92. Vee, did you follow Peter Simple? His glee at sticking his finger in the eyes of politicians and political junkies is hilarious to me (and infuriating, no doubt, to those who think politics should always be taken seriously but who are not so hidebound as to never read something that doesn't bolster their own opinions). Are there any Peter Simple-types left? I think I knew the young, female English reporter whose faux pas in 1974 was referring to Robert Mugabe as "Bob" to his face.

calvin coolidge was pres in 1923...and it wasn't a state dinner...it could have been held in the private quarters, so the kitty would have been right at home...

I certainly KNOW when Coolidge was president - "back in the day". I just do not believe the story that's all. It sounds like something that was going around in an email. Why would any one give a cat coffee with cream and sugar to drink? Would Coolidge not know that it could kill a cat? Was he trying to kill the cat? Horrible if true.

Don't apologize, Suzan! Cat lovers understand. No need to get all bent out of shape about something that happened that long ago! Cats like milk, whether it is good for them or not, and I can't imagine the prez intended harm for the kitty.

I thought it hilarious!

Our barn cats begged for, and thrived on raw cow's milk. I've never heard about any harm this may have done. However, cow's milk should not be given to suckling kittens. They should get only mother's milk and mommy cat will decide when its time for the kittens to include other items in their diet.

Back in the day cats were given saucers of milk quite regularly. That was a cute anecdote whether true or not. LOL

I hope the other poster just has a sarcastic devil's advocate gene. If not someone needs to lighten up.

I grew up on a dairy farm and the barn cats thrived on cows milk.

I know the big white and black cat that rules this house will help himself to a couple or three laps of milk, don't leave your glass unattended at our house - I sometimes expect him to ask for a cookie to dunk in it.
I wasn't actually apologizing (well I was, but in a tongue in cheek way) - what's humorous is no one seems to be worried that the cat was given caffeine!
Me thinks I will keep me blunders to meeself from now on.

I grew up on a farm and all our cats would line up for the milk....Now, we are taking care of 3 semi feral cats and also have 3 inside cats...On really cold days/nights, we heat milk for the outside cats and they love it and haven't had any problems...Every once in awhile,the inside cats think they need some too and will get a small amount....A steady diet wouldn't be best but once in awhile doesn't hurt.....
I've seen so many "blunders" and should try to remember or at least print them...So many good laughs....

Well, I for one enjoyed the story - true or not. We use to always give the cats milk. Never hurt them any.

This is not the first time Dilly Dally has taken issue with a post - probably won't be the last.

Back in the 70's I had a wonderful cat. She loved to drink coffee with cream and sugar, but her favorite food was cantelope. She also enjoyed canned Ravioli.

Loved the story about Silent Cal and the cat. If people without a sense of humor took umbrage, too bad. Maybe they should have a nice cup of tea with lemon and put their feet up . . . .
