Scared us to death....

Yesterday, DH and I were at DD's and we all went to WalMart with baby Camryn. DD and I branched out and left DH and baby on a bench mid-store. There were 1 guy and 2 girls in the store dressed in Goth. He was wearing a long trench coat and he walked the aisles with "attitude" with the girls following him.

Soon, we and the whole store heard someone yell the F word, long and loud.....really drawn out and really loud. It sent chills up my spine and made my heart pound...same with DD, DH and other shoppers. The young guy goes striding from the back of the store to the front with coat tails flapping and a smirk on his face. He left the store with the girls trailing behind and looking embarrassed.

DD and I both hurried to DH and baby. We all had been thinking the same thing....Does the guy have a gun under his coat???

I won't even try to list the things that went through our heads in that split second...save the baby, hit the floor, throw things and distract him, call 911 (but, of course, DD and I had left our phones in purses with DH)...

I don't know if WalMart even had time to take any action. A couple of shoppers made comments to the "kids", but the guy just smart-mouthed back.

It was a chilling experience.

No doubt he was just looking for attention,but I don't blame you for being scared in light of recent happenings.

Wow, that IS creepy! Good thing you went into "protection mode". If I had been the greeter, I would have alerted the manager to watch them. But then, that would be profiling , wouldn't it?? Sorry, once they set foot inside the store, it's the store's right to follow through.
Goth is just really scary looking anyway. That's part of the attitude isn't it?. Attrack attention.

That's a great product but I'd be worried your cat may try to maneuver around it and end up on the other side. Only thing I can think of is to attach a strip of plexiglass along the hall side of the railing but again, it depends on how determined your pet is to get up there. Banana - I live in the Dallas area, and trust me, we've got clay! :-) Most pools built around here are inground gunite pools (mine is), so I'm sure gunite's fine in clayish soils. I'm no expert, but I think the only way a gunite pool would float is if your groundwater level is relatively high, and the pool was drained and the hydrostatic relief valve on the main drain failed somehow. The hydrostatic relieve valve is there specifically for this reason - to equalize the pressure of the groundwater (if any) pushing up on the pool by letting some of the groundwater through. For your neighbors whose pools floated, I'd suspect a failure in the hydrostatic relief valve. Groundwater in your area must be pretty high. Also, did they drain the pool by chance? One thing you might consider if you're seriously thinking of building a pool is to consult with a foundation engineer who is familiar with the soils in your area. They will know what kinds of issues to deal with. They might, for example, recommend special piers (helical piers, etc.) to make sure the pool doesn't move as the clay contracts/expands. Good luck!

ajsmama, thanks for your comments. the house was built in the 50s and the problem is not with the bedding touching the outlet but with it being only one of 2 outlets in the room, we will need to plug into it and it's an older outlet where the plugs sag out of it. My dh doesn't want the plugs from a light to be jammed against the bed, and since my son is only 3 1/2 we need a bedrail and a wall for him not to fall out so bed needs to be against wall...I guess we could have another outlet put in at some point, but not now. Polly929, I will be getting rid of the dresser soon and getting a long one to put in it's place against the wall the head of the bed in on. The curtains we have do come in red (Pottery Barn Kids)and you can't really tell but they are navy blue with colorful stitching in stipes. I just noticed they have curtains which match the bedding (see link) what do you think about that? Shannon01, the door is on the same wall as the bed. The closet wall is to the left of the door and the closet is not very long but takes up half of that wall. In the picture with the bookcase, the wall to the left is where the closet is, pretty much within inches of the left edge of photo. I like your ideas. I think I will keep the bed where it is. As for toy, we have a playroom so he doesn't really need any storage for them. Just books. And we just bought this bedding he picked out in January when he changed from a crib to a big boy bed. So that stays. Making a headboard out of the cards is a fantastic idea! Valinsv, thank you for considering the real reason behind my son's feelings. We actually have had a big year with lots of changes. We moved in October (just up the street, so same friends etc but still a move), I just had a baby, and he moved from a crib to a big boy bed. I'm with you in not wanting to make too many changes at once. The problem is that ever since we moved in here, his room has been in constant flux, now with the bed so I guess this is my last ditch effort to get it right. But I agree too much change is no good. So I think the biggest thing is the paint color. I will paint it a wheat/khaki. I will keep the bed where it is and move the animal cards down to make either a headboard or put on the wall next to his bed. And I will get a new longer dresser for safety reasons and put it next to his bed. But like you said, first the paint and then wait to see. We don't have room for a chair but we do cuddle up for a long while on his bed and talk and read at night. The problem is I don't feel warm and cozy in there, so there may be a real issue of design to address as well as being sensitive to is growing independence and feelings of fear. Wow. This has all become much more complex than when I began but it's good. I'm going to involve him in all of this too so that should help. Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond and give me good advice. You pretty much confirmed that what we are doing is right--just "being there," keeping things light, not making a big deal out of this to DSS. KKNY, you don't know me, yet you read the worst into what I said, in the meantime, ignoring all of the clearly positive aspects of it. Perhaps I should read the worst into your post to point out that you did nothing more than take an opportunity to further what appears to be your "mission" to attack the SMs here. If you really wanted to help, as a BM, you could offer some constructive advice. But if you did that, you might actually help IMPROVE a step situation, which would REALLY run counter to your "mission," now wouldn't it?? For your information, and for anyone else who is wondering, I made the point that they are not "good enough" to make their middle school team (yes, they had try-outs and DID NOT make it) to show that this "team" they are on is just a step above "pick-up basketball" in the neighborhood. It is something they do for fun and exercise, but b-ball is not a sport that either of them particularly excel at, nor is this league something that is that important to them vs. time with their father, which they need, NOW MORE THAN EVER, IMO. It would be like DH telling them he can't do visitation one weekend b/c he has a church league b-ball game. If DH has to miss visitation for work (which almost never happens, as even though DH is a lawyer and works MANY hours a week, he puts in extra hours during the week so he can take off the weekends and be with DSSs), or if DSSs have to miss for school, church or some other activity that is really important to them, that is another matter. And this is not MY original sentiment--I am actually parroting what DH says, and HE certainly is allowed to make statements w/o having bad motives ascribed, ISN"T HE, KKNY??? The point I was trying to make is, there are some activities that really "justify" missing visitation, and others do not and are an "excuse" which is a symptom of a problem. If we suddenly agree to skip visitation everytime there is something going on that one of them could possibly do, we might as well tell them to "have a nice life" as I suggested above. I probably should have mentioned that DSSs have played in this league for years and have NEVER had a problem missing Sat. games for visitation, so it seems obvious it was an "excuse" this year. Also, they both are VERY VERY good at other things, and we support them. DSS 14's soccer team went to the state championships last year. DSS 12 has only lost a few wrestling matches IN HIS LIFE! So, when it comes to soccer and wrestling, we understand that they can't miss and work around those things. Someone mentioned "walking on eggshells" around SKs. That is the real irony of KKNY ascribing bad motives to me. For 9 years, I have gone out of my way to try not to say anything that would be upsetting to DSSs. When they do things that I would correct my son on in a minute (like eat chocolate chip cookies, brownies, etc. dropping crumbs all over the kitchen instead of over the counter, pouring a large glass of the last milk we have in the house so that there is none for anyone else) I do not say ONE WORD. I remind myself that I am glad they like my cookies, and I'm glad their drink of choice is MILK over soda. Of course, I would think nothing of telling DS 6 not to do that or anything else. But I don't want to do anything to make them feel "picked on" at our house. So it is almost LAUGHABLE to me that someone here would say I made a "dig" at DSS 14 over not being good enough to make the middle school team. Also, I feel badly for DH b/c he is truly one of the best dads one could imagine. Someone asked that recently on another thread. My DH is a wonderful DH and an amazing dad. When DSSs were little guys, he bathed them, dressed them, complete care. (He bathes our 2, does diaper changes, etc.) DSS 14 plays guitar and when his band played for his school recently, DH took the morning off work to be there. (4+ hours round trip for a 15 minute assembly, but again, he loved every minute of it.) He also takes DSSs INDIVIDUALLY on father-son weekends each summer. (For past 3 years, DSS 12 and he have gone to father-son wrestling camp; DSS 14 and he have been to father-son baseball camp and pro football Hall of fame.) DH loves to laugh and has a very witty sense of humor and always keeps things light. I just read this response to DH in its entirety and he agrees with everything I've said. I think I'm going to end this with the sentiment that the fact that DH and I are on the same page and have a STRONG, HEALTHY, HAPPY marriage will get us through this. You never know what might happen these days and I can understand you being scared. Sorry your outing with the baby and your family was spoiled by that goof.

I'd have been scared to death to Leslie. Especially after what happened here in Omaha last month. I don't like to go where there's crowds anyway. Now even more so.

I'm just glad you are all okay. I don't ever want to hear about another shooting on TV. What kind of parents do these kids have?

My daughter and I had to go to Westroads in Omaha this past week. And she had to return some things to the store the shootings took place in.

As we passed the doors where all the memorials had sat...I got a shiver.

You wonder about everyone you see with a long coat.

I reminded myself several times that it could happen in ANY store we shop in.

Omaha is still very shaken by what happened there.

Sorry you were so scared. In Santa Cruz,CA strange looking people, like Goths, are part of the scenery. You should take a walk down Pacific Mall downtown on a nice day. It is like every one is trying so hard to look even weirder then the other one, with all the tattoos, piercings, strange hair color and cuts plus totaly bizarre outfits. Most of the time I just shake my head and laugh.

freaky people scare me now that I'm 'older'. I think some of them may not me right in the head, due to drugs or whatever.

A lot of them don't act normal...just like the one who hollered that in the store.

Sure points out how very different things are in different regions of the country.

Around here (major NE urban area), I wouldn't have blinked twice at an oddly garbed kid, and unfotunately, that kind of language is more often heard than not. You see and hear a lot worse around here. And you can't be scared of everyone you pass on the street.

Truly, the situation you described wouldn't have phased me at all, because odd sights and sounds are a part of our landscape on an everyday basis.

In this area, that guy would have attracted a lot of attention and I bet the management would have kept an eye on him. And after saying something like that, would have banned him from the store forever. It's just not tolerated here. I saw a guy with a rude sweatshirt escorted out of a store, once. People were so pleased!

I'm glad he was a just a jerk and a not a murderer, Leslie. And I'm also glad to know there are people here with concealed carry permits who would be willing to try to stop someone who starts shooting.

Like Aptosca and others I'm so used to it I hardly notice it.

For the most part I enjoy Gothy kids. I find them to be extremely bright, creative and mostly well mannered.

DS was wearing a long black duster as part of his school "uniform" lol long before the first shooting happened. Now he was 6'2",had long hair halfway down his back,wore a big black leather hat and several huge silver rings on each finger.

I got several comments from his teachers on what a pleasant kid he was once they actually spoke to him. One teacher even told me he found my son extremely intimidating until he was in his classroom.

Today DS is a responsible adult who is still very much a part of the "alternative style" in Santa Cruz. His hair is short, he still wears mostly black and he's quite the legend amongst those who know him. No violence unless necessary, no tats or piercings except for one small ear stud and the first to help those in need.

A couple weeks ago I saw a stray kitten scared and shivering outside a Walgreens at 2:00 am. I couldn't take it and waited for a bit to see if anyone would. No one would get involved until a little Goth girrrl and her BF came along. That kitten had a nice warm meal and a new home the night. :-)

That kid in the store wasn't Goth. He was an ass.

Right! It wouldn't have mattered if the guy was dressed in khakis and a blue Polo shirt, or overalls and a red plaid shirt. If he had presented an "attitude" while roaming the aisles, he would've been someone to watch, regardless. It was the way he yelled the word that was chilling and then the way he smirked and strode out of the store while shoppers gave way.

Actually, I assume he left the store without being stopped because we didn't hear any ruckus up front. I don't know if he was stopped or not.

I don't judge by Goth appearance, either. I used to find it disarming, but have since got used to it. But, he was dressed that way, so that's the description I gave.
