Tricia, You went overboard (boat theme) with a totally unexpected thank you!

Hurricane Sandy: While I have lived through hurricanes my entire life, the devastation of this one was so chronicled on TV that I constantly thought of the implications of such a disaster. I was compelled to send a box of basic kitchen stuff to help Tricia and some of her neighbors on their road to recovery. It was such a small (think grain of sand on the Mystic Beach) donation but I had to do something.

Tricia has been very gracious in her communication with me, which was more than I expected considering what she is dealing with every minute of the day so this gift is a very big deal! Vermont Maple Syrup-last week I showed Beau a program on how maple syrup is made and it takes 40 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup. I have spoiled him with "real maple syrup".

Images Of America-Mystic-I know Tricia didn't know that I have a number of these books beginning with Exeter, NH where my mother's family is.
Air Bags-I also know that Tricia didn't know that BeauLily have a fun popping these each week; I have a lot of them in the garage and I let them pop 4 each.
Tourist Map of Mystic-It's been a long time since I've been to Mystic, I hope this is an omen that I'm going back soon.

Gee, what good responses. BaaBaaRaa, my SDLM are great. My only problem is that one nursery confuses them with climbers, so I need to leave the long shoots until we have heavy rains, then separate the climbers from the regular rose. In the total scheme of rose growing, that is ok, but when they send 3 sprouts together, and I must take out 2, then that rose will not grow well with the others, and I need to complain to get another rose which they do readily send. (Most of my SDLM are in beds with each other.) They are magnificent. Thanks, Jeff. I am still thinking. If I do purchase from RU, I need 4 roses or the cost is prohibitive. Balling is not a huge problem with me. It gets so hot here, and the rebloom of SDLM is fast enough that I just snap those blooms and more come on. Sherry, Captitaine is tempting, but it does not seem to be available to me. THanks Olga. We have sudden bouts with black spot, but the turn around is fast, and suddenly the rose is clean. Often this happens in August as I go back to school and am very busy. Michael, I am still thinking about the MOP. I am wondering if others farther south have not responded because it does not like the heat or it fades. Last year we had weeks of temps at or over 100. Others will respond if they like the rose well. I do need to find 4 of their roses or it is too expensive. Everyrose, that is very helpful. Red Birds In A Tree....Sounds a lot nicer than it is, well, unless you somehow manage to keep it alive. Tickseed doesn't sound appealing. Lol...naked ladies...I have some...this is the first year...and sure enough, I just found them flowering...So I said aloud "hey, there's some of those naked ladies"....got DH's attention QUICKLY.

7' tall...I hope you have tall ceilings! ;-) Some palms are more cold hardy than others, but frankly I'm not knowledgeable about them. I couldn't turn up anything on the internet under the common name "Mystic Palm." If you know the botanical name, you could probably Google to find out how cold hardy it is. I found this website with some tips on protecting palms outdoors. Also, if you haven't posted there already, I think this would be a good question for the folks at the Palms and Cycads forum.

Tricia, I am so terribly sorry to hear this. What a tragedy and yes, small towns feel a loss like this much more than larger impersonal places. I hope cell phone use was not involved. It is so crazy. Just last night on the way home I had to swerve onto the shoulder of the road to avoid a woman who was looking down at her cell phone (probably texting) and crossed the center line. Thank God we were not going any faster. I was in Mystic just a couple years ago and it is small and so charming. I am so sorry this happened. Please be careful out there everyone.

Oh Cathy, I think this post is fine! It's all about the maple syrup, I want to know what you're going to use it for, especially after you and Beau discussed the process involved to get one gallon. BBQ sauce, fudge, on pancakes? Oh and I do have a question, I seem to remember Annie and others recommending grade B maple syrup over grade A, is that correct? If so, why?
The fact that this exchange was between two big hearted people is just a nice bonus!
Maple syrup is on my list now, I have been out for several months. Should I get A or B?

Great gifts! Another fan of the hot plate.

Di - I always buy grade B because that's what "they" say to buy and it makes me feel like I know what I'm talking about. ;-) Someday maybe I'll do a side by side comparison and decide what "I" prefer. I think the key is that it's not like A is better than B, which is easy to assume, they're just different. B seems to be darker. Generally. It's also harder to find. I've seen it said that A is better for pancakes and B is better as an ingredient, but like with most things opinions vary.

Cathy, there is no need to apologize. I think it is wonderful that you thanked Tricia publicly for her lovely gift.

I remember when there use to be more "surcies" (Love that word) gifts sent to members as a thank you for something or sometimes for no reason at all. Just a nice gesture. One that should be acknowledge . I always enjoyed reading about these connections among forum friends. I still do. I don't remember any one complaining about it back then.

Unsure if a post here is appropriate but I've decided to let my better judgment prevail.

Cathy, I'm glad you received the package. It was FAST! Only took a couple days. Wasn't supposed to arrive until tomorrow. :)

We are going to have to rename our peninsula "Mustang Point" because of your gracious and thoughtful gifts to our recoveries. I intend to submit the renaming request at our next planning meeting! :) I know one little girl who had a homemade BD cake because of a pan that showed up on her doorstep from somebody in FL she'd never heard of. Chocolate bundt cake is now her favorite! She's 14.

Oh Tricia, that warms my heart to hear about the birthday cake. I'm sure the folks in your town have been showered with many, many items to help get back to day-to-day routines.
