How are you spending your first day of 2011?

I'm still settling in (stop me if you are bored with my story).

Enjoyed a lovely evening with friends - too much dinner/cookies, a few drinks. Today I'm washing up in the kitchen to start. Been dreaming about gardening. Going to pot up some geranium and begonias I brought in. And I'm thinking of starting some onion seeds, a few tomato plants and lettuce for some indoor winter treats. (Also my non-pill version of prozac).

It's unseasonally, no ridiculously warm today for Ontario - hoping to get off my butt and clear out more of the trailer we lived in (stop me if you are getting really bored with this story). It's a mental thing I know - been unloading that trailer now for over a month.

And hoping to spend more time outside today doing 'something' while this weather is hear.

Keep wanting to watch the movie "Day after tomorrow". Maybe do that this evening. Who knows.

Always dream big on my daily wish list. We'll see. Still enjoying the morning fire and my coffee.

Do tell, what'cha all up to?

I'm spending a lazy day just enjoying my dogs.Do have to do laundry sometime today or tomorrow.I plan to make supper and just veg.Had a rough week at work and with Miss Emmie and I'm trying to catch a cold.

I used to dream about gardening this time of year--in fact, my DH and I had a New Years Eve tradition of making out our seed order for the vegetable garden. But this year and last, I haven't been eager to contemplate something that requires that much energy. LOL

Today I'm continuing to work on the project I began last night: cleaning all my pantry shelves, tossing outdated foods and reorganizing the rest. My pantry is badly in need of this!

Tonight I'm meeting five friends for a Thai dinner, and then we're going to a wine bar to hear some jazz.

i began switching my houseplants - mostly aglaonemas - into a hydroculture set up about 2+ years ago. i tend to use the Pot-in-Saucer method described in the link below. the beauty of this type of grow method is that it is basically impossible to over water plants. and the water line in the clear saucer makes it simple enough that a 5th grader can figure out if you need to add more. so it's nearly impossible to under water either. this past year my husband's father became ill and died, and we've been away for long stretches of time. by placing the pots in larger reservoir tubs, and having a friend drop by to check on things once in a while, i've been able to be gone for 3 or 4 weeks at a time, multiple times, without losing any plants. they can easily go 2 weeks without anyone checking on them. [when i'm home, i place the plants back in the smaller reservoir trays because i think that it's healthier for them. this gives them about a 1 to 2 week watering interval for most plants.] i feel like i'm still learning about my method - for instance, proper fertilization levels and such - but most plants have done well for me. i'm convinced that if i hadn't made the switch, i wouldn't have any surviving plants after this past year... and unfortunately, the next few years are likely to be more of the same. if anyone is interested in this method, check out the link below. there is also a lot of good info on the First Ray's website. his information is mostly slanted toward orchids, but it applies to houseplants as well. please don't think i'm implying that this method is 'no work' or 'perfect', but the question was about vacations, and i think that this is where this method shines. the snags, or complaints, are that the pots are heavy, the Hydroton media is expensive, and if you don't water and fertilize properly you can salt up the media and kill your plants. and if you decide to give it a try, as with any dramatic change... try switching a few test plants first, not your prized specimen or your grandmother's favorite plant. cheers, nancy Here is a link that might be useful: Houseplant Hydroculture

Do I have to include DH's junk food? Bags of chips and cookies, and ice cream which he is the only one to eat; he buys, stores, eats, and is totally responsible for them. Okay, that's probably only about $5 a week, but. For years I spent well under $100 per month; now we are both retired: so meals are mostly only for two, but I do use a few convenience foods. Looking at the checkbook tells me the grocery bills for the past year averaged way less than $60 per month. Note that is edible only, paper goods and other non-food are purchased separately. There's no magic used, and I don't mill grains ~ I know, that's a loss of nutrition but I do freeze the flour until it's used. We do have a vegetable garden but it's no longer the primary provider of our food and it has gradually shrunk in both size and variety ~ once you hit 70, it seems like a good idea to let the young folks do the planting & picking, lol. I buy vegs & fruit from the local farmer's market, and can or freeze whatever is in season and available at a reasonable cost. Items purchased from the grocery store are almost always on sale... milk, butter and flour are bought at a warehouse club. (Milk is 3.29 per gallon compared to best grocery price of $3.89) I grew up rural, where if you wanted to eat peaches or green beans in January you canned them the preceding summer. That isn't stockpiling, but a different way of running your pantry: grow it yourself or buy what is available at the normal harvest-time. In other words, one thinks of what will be needed between harvest this year and the harvest next year, and prepares accordingly. I do can/freeze almost everything made with tomatoes (from spaghetti sauce to catsup to juice), make all our jam/jelly, and make most meals from scratch, including bread. It takes very little effort to pre-prepare and can/freeze heat-n-eat meals, which means I don't spend money on TV dinners or other commercially prepared foods. I rotate meals containing beef, pork, or seafood, and alternate each meat-meal with a non-meat meal. Meat-meals rarely have meat as the main ingredient; there will be at least two vegs and a fruit each in servings larger than the meat portion. Quite often meat is used more as an accent or flavoring, such as in chili-mac or a stirfry. I do try to vary recipes so that no meal is repeated more often than once a month. I think it sums up this way: I cook/bake from scratch (no box mixes); most food is grown locally; most foods are purchased either on sale or at a very good price and sufficient is prepared to use for the following year; meats are eaten in small quantities and non-meat meals account for half of the dinners; there are always pre-prepared meals frozen or canned; and there is a lot of variety in recipes so boredom is prevented. Oh, and while I was working, I made a point of rarely spending more than 30 minutes fixing dinner.

I cut my long hair in August,now my hair takes me seconds to do. As for makeup-none on a daily basis. It just rubs off on my surgical mask at work. For a night out, or if I want to impress my makeup takes me 10 minutes but I rarely wear it. I am lucky that at 52 I have good skin. Still nice and tight (on my face that is). My only issue is brown spots from sun exposure while golfing, but that is easily covered. I learned my lesson and religiously wear spf 50 from oil of olay regenerist every day.

Oh, I think you'll find that most of the folks here and on some of the other forums herein like Decorating, Bathroom, yada yada, are incessant researchers as well. I think that trait is what draws us here in the first place. I don't know if budget issues increases that time commitment. I've definitely seen people buying fridges that cost more than my entire remodel doing hours of due diligence as well. Sure, we get a few folks who post and run and just want some hand-holding and then we don't see them here again. That's fine. That's what we're here for. Of course, they could be doing hours of research other places as well so that' not a sure-fire way of knowing just how much time they put in. I have analysis paralysis in most areas of my life. Changing eating habits, researching gear for hiking/biking, trails and bike routes, exercise routines, how to pack light when traveling, planning a vacation, gardening, etc. Sometimes I have to force myself to just pull the trigger and do it, whatever it is, instead of just reading about it. :)

I am doing laundry and disinfecting the house before DD comes home today from Florida... DH and I have been sick all week. We are both feeling better, but still have lingering symptoms *cough, cough*.

I'm not doing a danged thing! My sister and I will be going out to eat this evening. It's pouring down rain, so that'll probably be the only time I go outside today!

Straightening up the house. DD and SIL are coming for dinner. It's amazing how quickly the house gets messy! The table is set and dinner is pretty much made so just have to get the rest of the place presentable.

I'm visiting with my dad who is staying with us for a few weeks, and organizing some paperwork and a few things. I always like to organize on New Year's Day. I will be cleaning the g/h later, and maybe planting some peppers. DH wants me to stagger my plantings this year, because last year they kept coming ripe all at once. We got three "crops" from our 23 plants. I will probably plant carrots, because I have a greenhouse variety, and I love fresh carrots. Jasdip, I didn't realize you could plant onions and transplant them. I think I'll do that too!

Later I'm roasting a fat chicken and serving carrots, squash and twice baked potatoes with it. I LOVE cooking for my dad, he's not as picky as the bunch I live with and he certainly needs fattening up!

I just put a cake in the oven, and think I'm going to clean out all the left overs from the fridge and get my kitchen cleaned up. I also want the Christmas tree down today and my living room back to normal.

Staying in! Housebound because of all the ice we've had over the last few days and the very low (3 degree; 15 below windchill) temps. It is treacherous both walking and driving. Luckily, the larder is full of supplies but I'm itchy for exercise and fresh air. One of those days when I wonder, why do I live here??

Last evening we went to Joe's brothers house to play board games. Came home around 1 am. We slept in late this morning, Joe has a bit of a cold. This evening we are going to his sister's house for a family get together for Chinese food (that's their New Year's Day tradition). I might go out and take a few pictures, it's calm with a few sunny breaks.

I stayed in all day yesterday because of the ice. Didn't even get dressed.
Today I am watching the Rose Parade and later will watch the Rose Bowl game. On Wisconsin! In between, I will get out of the house.

It is raining and will be all day and tonight, so I am staying in and probably crafting. It's sooo dark and gloomy that I feel like I could just go back to bed, but I won't. Friends stopped in this morning which was nice. My neighbor will probably be over later today.

It is a truly beautiful day here today which I hope is a good sign for the New Year~ blues skies and smooth sailing!

Have a crockpot with corned beef potatoes carrots and cabbage I loaded earlier, along with some blackeyes with ham.

I am relaxing and doing some reading and tv watching.

Will watch the OU Sooners bowl game this evening and sure hope they win Go OU!

I'm going to clean out the bedroom closet and organize it, have been wanting to do that for quite a while.

Then laundry.

DH has decided to do nothing today but watch movies!

I'm being a sloth (although I don't limit that to holidays!); I did a load of laundry and vacuumed, but other than that nothing. We had over a foot of snow yesterday, plow came and got rid of that. Then overnight, we had about five more inches. I looked out and some kind soul had shoveled a path to the garage and my deck. Then I heard the lovely music of the plow. The sun is now shining, so that helps.

So far today I managed a two hour nap, still doing my dishes (limited space), brought in my garden lights to dry them out (rained in the bucket I threw them in yesterday). They're new this year, I'd hate to have the batteries etc rust. Ate some more cookies, brought my plants to the kitchen table to pot up. They are now staring at me in dismay. Day's not over yet...all things in good time.

Let's see slept in..

Served hubby a breakfast appetizer of Chocolate Maple Bacon Cupcake, cream cheese danish slices and coffee...(I ate a cupcake too.)

Then started a pot of Great Northerns and Ham hock.

Then made a bacon, leek potato fritata.

Got the dishwasher running and just got back from town. Kamren needed basketball shoes for his up coming season, we also picked up another jr size basketball. Now home..I need to finish kitchen clean up. (Baked 6 different batches of cupcakes yesterday for our New Years Eve party.)

It's a most fabulously sunny brisk day out..I think I'll click the dog on her leash and take a nice stroll. 37F outside.
