striped socks

I am knitting with striped wool for the first time and have finished the 1st sock.

Question - Is the striping on the second sock supposed to start at exactly the same colour? I would have to discard quite a long piece of the wool to get the striping colour sequence exactly the same. Does it really matter?

Depends on the person. Some like them to match, some don't. My DD says she didn't care, so hers do not match. If you don't care, start sock where-ever you want. If you want them to match, discard the yarn!

I am not certain how it'll work this year. I was going to decorate the whole house yesterday, but thought better of it when, after 30 minutes, I was saying Maggie Down! Murphy NO NO! every second, :( when all I'd done is drag out the boxes. I wanted to "do it up big time" (every square inch in greenery/decorations) for the little fella, but it's looking like it probably won't happen. I did put up a special little tree in his room with unbreakable ornaments on an artificial tree that I flipped the end of the branch over the loop of the ornament to keep it on the tree. Does that make sense? That doesn't keep them from knocking it down in whole. I might do the same with the bigger tree if it looks ok when I get home tonight (((heavy sigh))) I was just thinking about Gruver (how do you spell that kitty's name?!) and all the animal troubles you've had Michelle. You handle their maladies with greater aplomb than I ever could with Keegan. Any little thing and I was a shambles.

Anyone else growing the 8 foot tall Lily Trees/Bushes?

Another variety of them also from 2012. I have them in solid colors and multi colors in the containers. My neighbors look for their showy and breadth taking blooms every year since I started growing them... Many never heard of Lily Trees beforehand. I have to cut the stalks back at the end of the growing season, just like the low growing lilies, and, they pop up through the soil the same way,around May and start blooming late June and early July in Ocean County, "Down by the Jersey Shore." If you haven't heard of the Lily Trees, take this thead as an educational one on them. Will post more photos of them as this growing season for them goes onwards this year, 2014. Would love to see other growers photos of them too, and, how and where you plant them and if you use tomato cages on them or not. And if and how you fertilize them, etc. I love these Lily Trees better than the other Lilies I'm growing because I think that they are the showiest of all.

Do you knit socks now? You can certainly knit mismatched multi striped socks in what ever colors you want!There are many beautiful self-striping sock yarns available. Pick two different skeins and go for it. Or, use the matching skeins, but let the yarn start in different places in the skein so it's the same color, but stripes differently. If I buy a 100 gm gall, which makes me two socks, I use a kitchen scale to weigh it (sometimes it says 100 gms, but might be a bit over/under), then re-wind it into two balls and match my ends, then start both socks at the same time so I get them to match almost exactly. It also helps me keep about the same gauge on both socks! If you buy a 100 gm ball and want it to stripe differently, just start each sock in a different place in the pattern of the yarn. Tami

In the summer I wear sweats,yoga pants or cut off sweats and a t-shirt around the house. Flip flops and no bra. In a heat wave (mid 90s or higher) I wear some long knit shorts. By late evening I often add a loose sweatshirt. Anything in the 70's is cold to me. In the winter is when I really look strange. (mild California winters where it doesn't snow) I wear sweats,a thermal top, sweatshirt, and furry boot style slippers with rubber soles. Sometimes I add socks. I sometimes wear a ski cap and those little magic stretch gloves gloves indoors. No bra. Nothing matches and some of my indoor clothes are threadbare. I have t shirts that are transparent because they are the most comfy for sleeping in. I rarely wear outside clothes indoors. When I go out it's t-shirts (with bra) and jeans and sandals in summer. It's LS tees or sweatshirts with bra and jeans with boots in the winter. Sometimes with thermals underneath. I keep two sizes of jeans. Those to be worn with skins and those to be warn without. Since I don't do fashion I can be dressed and out the door in less than 10 minutes. Twenty minutes if I do hair and make=up. I have an assortment of jackets from lightweight windbreakers to something you might wear in the snow country.

Sylvia, my trick is to use a digital kitchen scale, if using a 100 gm ball of yarn, and divide it in half, rewinding it into two balls. I try to have the "begining" ends matching at that point. If they don't, (and I start both socks at the same time on two different needles so I get them close to matching), Just unravel the second ball til it matches, and save that yarn. You might need it to finish the toe of the second sock. By all means, don't throw it away! And like Vickey said, there is no knitting police, so if it doesn't bother you, start wherever you like.

Oh I should have worded it like Tami..don't ever THROW AWAY the yarn..by discard it I mean add it to that pile you accumilate (or will) of sock yarn that you "may need some day".

Thanks ladies for your advice. I have finished the socks. I didn't take the time or trouble to match the stripping on the yarn. The socks look fine to me and were for me anyway being as they are my first try with the stripping yarn.

YOU ARE RIGHT VICKEY - there is no Knitting police.
On to my next pair (started already) This sock knitting is so addictive. I try to sneak in a few rows everywhere - on the phone, at the hairdressers, etc,etc, even whenever I walk by my knitting. Is everyone this bad?

Oh did I forget to mention that part? Addicting is not even the word. I LOVE to knit socks, and do not even want to finish my other projects...even resent my other projects because they take away from my sock knitting.

Monkey socks have been my favorites...though circle socks have been an close second. I want to knit almost all of them and of course am not even close.

Congratulations!

Addictive? You bet! Tho it's not as much fun if you do some for profit. I have a friend who comissioned me for FOUR pair of wool hunting socks, by Nov.'s hunting season. I have two done now and have acutally got a callus on my left index finger from pushing the needle back thru the stitch! Of course, when I get finished, I might have the $ for a new computer if I need it! I told him an astronomical price, thinking I would price myself out of the work. It didn't work. I should have told him $200 a pair! But I didn't.
