Anyone else growing the 8 foot tall Lily Trees/Bushes?

Planted some of the 8 foot tal lBreck's Lily Trees a few years ago, and, they are just breadth taking when in full bloom. I'm container growing mine and they are in a 3 foot wide by about a 20 foot long area between the house and my sidewalk in a senior complex so I use the tall tomato cages to support them when they are full of flowers. Here is a photo from last year when they just stated blooming. Each year, they seem to grow taller and taller and more blooms per plant. I leave the tomato cages in the containers all year long and can decorate them in the winter months with holiday decorations... I like container gardening because of a bad back and being over 70 years old and living in a senior citizens complex. I just use Miracle Grow plant food on them every once in a while, when I think of it. They really don't need much care at all. Have lower growing Lilies in a row of 3 more containers in front of the Lily Trees. The deer don't seem to bother them, especially since I have the Dial soap in the colorful striped socks hanging off of the tomato cages...

Another variety of them from July, 2012. This one, I believe is called "Garden Pleasure," with one one above called "Lavon" and the one below "Ovation." I don't know the botanical name for the Lily Trees nor the names of each of their 10 varieties in the two collections of them, the Spotlight and the Classic... Of course, I saved the literature that came with the bulbs over the years, for identifying them, when they poped up, and to show my neighbors and the like when I'm asked questions about them. I had started off with just about 10 bulbs a few years back, if I recall right. I thought that they were going to be "tree like" rather than "bush like" at the time. No matter how they grow, these have gorgeous blooms, as you can see, are just below my roof gutters somewhat... I'm really looking forwards to this years blooms.

Hi Donna - I don't think planting them beneath evergreen shrubs will work, since they produce blooms in late summer (mine are blooming now), followed by foliage, which persists all winter. The flower stems definitely would be lost beneath the nandinas, since they're less than a foot high. They're great under deciduous shrubs and trees, for that reason. What they want is as much sun as they can get during the winter months. I have them among Eupatorium coelestinum (weedy, but great for blue autumn flowers at the same time as the Rhodophialas) and in front of a clump of Anemone vitifolium, which is just finishing up its bloom now. No problem to divide, but they follow the same growth pattern as Sternbergias and the winter-growing Lycoris (like radiata), so it's best done in early summer as the bulbs go dormant (and we've had that discussion before!). The biggest problem I ever have with them is remembering where they're planted during the late spring and summer so as not to butcher them while trying to plant something else!

I always use 3% hydrogen peroxide right out of the bottle in plant rot emergencies. Any fleshy root, rhizome, bulb, succulent, etc. can handle it full strength no problem (in my personal experience) It's an insecticide for soil dwelling pests in larval form that feed on root systems. It instantly aerates and loosens compacted soil that won't drain. It's totally safe and organic (you can put it in your mouth, it is an oral debriding agent afterall). It'll foam up on the plant just like it does when used to treat scrapes and cuts on skin. The more rot, the more it foams. If treating a plant in a container, the soil level will even rise like dough because the reaction's byproduct is oxygen and water. Once the foaming subsides, I give a splash of fresh water to wash any residue away. Let the wound dry and callus before watering again or replanting.

Hello all, I grow the morning glory tree. It is not really a tree, but gets real tall about 6 -7 ft here. I have the lavender one and got a white one a couple of weeks ago. You cut them up in the fall like brugs and stick the 'sticks' in water to root over winter. Here in north FL they start to bloom in early summer. They love the full sun here. They do have hairy seeds but I just cut the stalks instead of collecting the seeds. Dee

Fast growing privacy bushes/trees

HELP! Three weeks ago we bought a house in Zone 15 (Central Coast of California, "frost-free" area about 1/4 mile from ocean, no salt spray, wind-sheltered), tore out the raggedy old plantings and now face the street with no privacy! There's an live oak and a Giant Sequoia along our street frontage, so there's partial shade and the soil is acid. We need 2 or 3 types of fast-growing shrubs for privacy (allowed to grow naturally - we don't want a pruned, uniform hedge.) Need to reach 10 feet, if possible. Would any of these work for us? NEAR/UNDER THE OAK: purple hopseed bush (dodonea viscosa), bay laurel (laurus nobilis), mock orange (pittosporum tabira) or escallonia rubra. NEAR/UNDER THE REDWOOD: camellia, carpenteria, pittosporum tabira, laurus nobilia, rhododendron. Thanks!

Another variety of them also from 2012. I have them in solid colors and multi colors in the containers. My neighbors look for their showy and breadth taking blooms every year since I started growing them... Many never heard of Lily Trees beforehand. I have to cut the stalks back at the end of the growing season, just like the low growing lilies, and, they pop up through the soil the same way,around May and start blooming late June and early July in Ocean County, "Down by the Jersey Shore." If you haven't heard of the Lily Trees, take this thead as an educational one on them. Will post more photos of them as this growing season for them goes onwards this year, 2014. Would love to see other growers photos of them too, and, how and where you plant them and if you use tomato cages on them or not. And if and how you fertilize them, etc. I love these Lily Trees better than the other Lilies I'm growing because I think that they are the showiest of all.
