Red Velvet Cake Icing

Hi all

I'm in the process of planning a birthday party for my mom and I want to make a red velvet cake. I know the icing, at least for me is the key to a delicious cake. So I need a killer icing recipe. Does anyone have one?

Thanks

Try this one, it delicious.

1 - 3 ounce package Cream Cheese, softened
6 Tablespoons Butter, softened
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
2 Cups Powdered Sugar

Beat all together until smooth and creamy. If frosting seems too thick, thin with a bit of milk.
Best if you use a double recipe of the frosting so you can put it on good and thick!

This is the recipe that I use. Make sure you cook the flour long enough so that the raw four taste is gone. This is an exceptionally good frosting. Very light and fluffy and nor overly sweet

Red Velvet Cake White Icing
In a saucepan mix well 1/2-cup milk and 3 tablespoons flour. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture becomes paste-like. Chill in refrigerator.
When ready to prepare icing, blend
1/2-cup margarine
1/2 cup Crisco
3/4-cup sugar
1-teaspoon vanilla
When well blended, add the chilled mixture. Beat about
ten minutes until well blended again. Add vanilla and beat for another 5 minutes.

Thanks for posting this recipe. I have tried several others and have always been disappointed in the outcome. Maybe it's me. I must say that after working across the street from Jongerwald's, I used to purchase their Red Velvet Cake for years and never had to worry about making my own. I use them as the RVC standard. Theirs is so yummy. They are located on Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach if you are ever close by.

Question about Red Velvet cake

Eileen, that sounds very good, but not like any Red Velvet cake I've ever had. My recipe calls for two BOTTLES of red food coloring and a tiny bit of cocoa, it's a chocolate cake wannabe with a lot of red dye. Mine has a cooked frosting that starts with flour instead of cream cheese frosting and the frosting is better than the cake is by far. Like LindaC, I can taste the red food coloring. So, to me it sounds like you did have Red Velvet Cake in the layers, but the additions of liquor and ganache were different than the traditional Red Velvet. Annie

We have always called the type of icing for Red Velvet Cake White Icing. Here is the recipe I have used for years with notes of some of the additions I have made to the frosting at one time or another. This icing is very easy to make. White Icing In a saucepan mix well 1/2 cup milk and 3 tablespoons flour. Cook, stirring constantluy, until mixture becomes paste-like. Chill in refrigerator. When ready to prepare icing, blend 1/2 cup margarine, 1/2 cup Crisco, 3/4 cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. When well blended, add the chilled mixture. Beat about ten minutes until well blended again. Add vanilla and beat for another 5 minutes. Spread on cake. Note: Additions I have made from time to time depending on what I wanted. Really the additions are limitless. -1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract -1 1/2 teaspoons espresso powder -2 t cocoa

Sally, that's the frosting recipe I've always had and used on Red Velvet Cake.

I don't particularly like Red Velvet Cake, as far as I am concerned it's just a "chocolate cake wannabe" with a whole lot of red dye, but I have a secretary who loves the stuff.

Since I love the frosting, we're both happy, LOL.

Here's a similar recipe. The idea is the same as Sally's, but the proportions are a little different.

1/2 cup flour
1 1/2 cups milk

3/4 lb butter, softened
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 vanilla

Combine flour and milk in a saucepan and cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and comes to a boil, stirring constantly. Cover and refrigerate until firm. (Several hours or overnight).

Cream the butter, gradually adding the sugar. Beat until fluffy. Add the chilled four/milk mixture and vanilla, and continue to beat until the mixture is light and smooth.

Thanks! They sound delicious! The best red velvet cake I had was sold in a place like Kentucky that sold chicken and burgers. Red velvet cake was one of the desserts they sold and it was amazing!

I will try them all! You can't have too much cake. OK well you can but I'll share.
