Parking Wars - funniest new show on TV....

...to me, at least. That may be because it's about the Philadelphia Parking Authority and I live in Philadelphia. It's on the A & E network at 10pm Tuesdays. Basically it's a camera crew following the people who actually write the tickets, or the ones that put 'the boot' on cars that have 3 or more unpaid parking tickets and also the lot where you go to bail you wheels out of jail. These people are real characters, and so are the car owners. You hear every excuse in the world!

Just FYI, the PPA has a reputation for corruption & patronage around here. But that's the higher-ups. The person on the street is just doing their job.

Last evening a guy named Brian ticketed a car that was double parked while the driver ranted & raved about how she was only there a minute. He walked away declaring 'Another satisfied customer!'. You had to be there. He says he couldn't stand sitting at a desk; he likes wandering around 'like a free range chicken'. Check it out some time.

Thanks for the heads up -- I'll check it out.

(When I saw your title, I thought you were talking about the parking lot at our Costco. There are many Eastern-Europeans in the neighborhood who don't understand the concept of "dibs" on parking spaces. Major fights every day and extra security needed.)

Watched the show last evening. Ummm.....sometimes the ticket/boot/tow seemed to be warranted and others I just felt plain sorry for. Not sure how long a show like this will remain though. Don't think I'll be a regular viewer.

In this economy I think many folks will be staying home more and will look to ways to save on food. Vegetable plantings is a great way to go. I learned many of my techniques simply watching shows like Gardening Naturally (thanks for helping me recall the name of that show Marg). In that show I learned more about proper composting, the use of manure, seaweed of all things, and other stuff. Sure it certainly may not appeal to all audience, but it was very imformative. Too bad we no longer have such shows. The new Victory Garden - well it's simply rehashed segments with a new host - Jamie Durie, a well known garden designer/landscaper from Australia. The show focuses mainly on designing on a grand scale - although it does emphasis green techniques, water conservation, etc.. It does have a small segment with Kip as the actual gardener and Chef Michel cooking the organic way. However it just doesn't have that 'Organic feel' to it. It seemed too Hollywood or too New Age. In my opinion -- good eye candy, not much on substance. There is good show on PBS - called Cultivating Life. While it is short, it does have everything, from building trellis, to planting, to cooking. It's good enough - although not close enough to the shows of the past. I've pretty much given up on watching shows on TV. There's hope however, and it exist online. Thanks for this, Shuffles. I'll be watching. I will be curious to see what price is mentioned for this transformation. I usually suspect that the costs quoted on rehab shows (inside or out) do not include all the expenses if your or I were to do it - design, transportation of materials, labor, temporary storage, etc. "Courech said he ultimately spent about $5,000 on landscaping. A Tampa-based company that did the work estimated the job would have retailed for $15,000 to $20,000, but some of the labor and material were donated."

Those photos are beautiful. No concrete, no asphalt, no sidewalks, no urban blight. No Starbucks. (I have never been to a Starbucks as we don't have any of that stuff around here.) I understand coffee costs $5.00??? But the heat is a problem for me though. Some love the heat, but I absolutely hate it. It went to 87 degrees up here last week end the kids were jumping into the rivers to cool off. That night it went down to 42 degrees and we all slept comfortably. But the responses are quite interesting. Some believe that God meant for man to walk on concrete and nothing less will do. Others will never consider living in a suburban, let alone urban setting. Some will never leave the seaside, while others think all you get is a shack there. Some believe people literally living on top of each other is the way to go and others think that anything less than 5 acres is confining. Some talk about having fine stores nearby to buy things, while others have no need for more "stuff". I love northern New England. I love when the leaves start to change in mid September and reach their peak around Columbus Day. I love the lack of urban areas. The biggest town in Vermont is Burlington with under 40,000 people. I love walking down my dirt road on a snowy evening in December and smelling woodsmoke in the air, knowing families are gathered around the hearth. I like the fact we have no streetlights. But there are plenty of people here that would consider my lifestyle backward. That's what makes this country so wonderful!

When my husband and I were selling our house last year, we went through a string of bad luck. We staged our home and put a lot of stuff in his office (he had his own business). Needless to say the building the office was in burned down and we lost a lot of pictures, but mostly just junk. We finally sold the house only to have the first buyers back out 4 days before the closing, but we were locked into buying our new house. We then put our home back on the market and prayed we would sell it in a newly SLOW market. Anyway we had many potential buyers come back and view the house 3 and 4 times but after 5 weeks still no offer. With the stress of holding 2 mortgages we were desperate. One day when my husband was commuting home from work it just so happened he was sitting next to a realtor. They got to talking about our house and she mentioned to him when ever she needed to get a house sold she would burn sage leaves to ward off evil spirits. That weekend we were holding an open house. Unbeknownst to me, as we were leaving the house my husband ran back in to "get something." He was taking a really long time so I ran in to find out what in the world he was doing. I saw him running through the living room with a smoking piece of aluminum foil and the overwhelming smell of burning herbs which smelled very illegal! I wanted to kill him. At the same time our realtor arrives and was nearly knocked back at the smell. At the time I didn't think it was funny and I was fuming. Needless to say, we got an offer that day, and we closed in 4 weeks. The ironic thing was our buyer was a Drug Enforcement Agent. He must of knew it was sage and not something else.

Tom- I think I'll have to tune in next week. As a former Philly resident I'd love to see those PPA ticket writers take on the double and triple parked cars in South Philly. Or those people who think it's perfectly fine to park in the middle of the street (at least they're not double parked).

And since it's winter do you think they'll go after all those drivers who shovel the snow from their cars, and then put out lawn cars in the street to 'save' their space until they get back home. I remember a few years ago one guy actually shot his neighbor because the neighbor took his parking spot.

Ah - those were the good old days, parking on the streets in Philadelphia. I used to live in NE Philly too. Our apartment was on Strahle Street and I worked at the Northeast Regional Library on Cottman. Now that I'm in the suburbs I have my own driveway.

I heard somewhere that the 'save your spot with a chair' phenomenon was a Philly tradition. Wonder if it hapens anywhere else. When I was a kid a neighbor did this; a man with a pickup truck stopped, put the chairs in the back & drove away!

I watched, they had some sort of marathon shows on this weekend. People amuse me..$900 worth of parking tickets and she cried when they towed her car...Kathy
