Lennox Heat Pump Quote - is this reasonable?

We live in a four level townhouse in MD and our heat pump serving the 3rd and 4th floor (about 1200 sq ft) is expiring (have some leaks but can't locate the leaks). Our HVAC contractor is suggesting a new system. The current system is 14-15 year old and it is a 11 seer, 2 ton Bryan builder model heat pump. The heat pump currently is in the attic so the selection of a new heat pump is limited due to the attic space/access.

Here is the New model we got quote from:

If my decision, I would get a competitive quote on Trane XR15 or AmStd Heritage 15 to compare prices.

That is a nice sgl stage HP system from Lennox, pricing not too bad.

A nice system and reasonably detailed proposal. The XP17 is a very quiet system and does have electronic demand defrost, which will greatly limit the amount of defrost cycles (better for equipment, efficiency, and comfort). For the most part your proposal seems fairly standard to me (both work scope and price wise).

I am in your area as well (Montgomery County). I suggest you call the following company as well for a proposal (link below) -- do yourself a favor and set up an appointment with Chris. They do good work (and no I am not employed by them :-) ). I would get a proposal for an XR15 or XL15i with matching TAM7 variable speed air handler.

While I do like Lennox equipment, I am not keen on the fact that their coils are still copper/aluminum as opposed to all-aluminum and certainly hope this changes soon as most manufacturers have begun doing so (Trane and Goodman to name a couple). Copper/aluminum coils have historically had leaking issues (as you've seen in your own system) due to pitting corrosion on the copper as well as galvanic corrosion between the Cu/Al. Aluminum coils are immune to the issue (not to say they cannot leak). With that said, Lennox still makes solid equipment, and your primary focus should always be finding the best company to do the work. Most all brands offer a 10 year factory parts warranty now.

Any problematic areas upstairs to heat/cool that may be due to ductwork issues (that can be addressed at the time of replacement)? The variable speed air handler will help move the air better, but proper duct design still matters. Its size, insulation value, layout, etc. all matter very much to the overall performance/efficiency of the system. Many home systems are lacking in this area. Attic in the ductwork especially needs to be sealed/insulated well.

Arizona Rheem/Rudd is one of the most overlooked and underrated HVAC brands in the residential market. Here is my personal checklist. Obviously correct sizing is important. If you are unsure, then request a load calculation or even perform it yourself for a nominal fee online. there are three equally important components-quality HVAC, the install by dealer, and probably the most overlooked and disregarded is the ductwork system. these are my minimum specs for a new HP system. both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system. 15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF best matching VS air handler full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron) scroll compressor preferred electronic demand defrost preferred thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature staged backup heat strips new and correctly sized refrigerant line set you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc. any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed. I would only use authorized dealers for the various brands that provide quotes. see mfg websites. I would look at Trane/AmStd,Rheem/Rudd,Carrier/Bryant. Depending on your location, I would not purchase a new HP system that did not have electronic demand defrost. Pricing varies between markets, brands, and models. IMO

I agree, With a 2 stage system, there won't be much difference between the 2. I would suggest the NATE dealer if for no other reason than they take the time to be educated and really, the installing dealer makes a big difference in the satisfactory outcome. They will have more resources to fall back on if they run into a question on your job, and they will also generally have a more thorough understanding of the little things about unit start up and such that can make a big difference in the long term performance of the system. This is not to say that the other sources you have mentioned may not be fine. It is just my opinion that dealers who care enough to take continuing classes and training will probably care enough to satisfy you better. As to heatpump vs AC. The advantage of a good heatpump with a low ambient control is that you can run it for heat when the outdoor temperature is around 30 or higher. A good Thermostat will automatically switch your system to furnace from heatpump based on the outdoor temperature. You are insightful enough to realize that is it usually either cool and mild, or really cold where you are. That is why the heatpump is such a good fit.

I should also add that here in WA we don't use the AC a whole lot, we'll be more concerned with heating costs. The SEER ratings just apply to AC right? so maybe I should be more concerned with HSPF.. XP14: 9.50 HSPF XP17: 9.50 HSPF XP21: 9.70 HSPF XP25: 10.20 HSPF which tells me, my heating costs will be pretty much the same no matter which unit I go with, right? So if I pair up the XP14 a less-expensive air handler such as a CBX32M, will my heating costs be pretty close to even the high end XP25 & CBX32MV combo?

Thanks again, neo. Yeah, that is odd about the SEER rating dropping. Looking at Contractor #2, for instance. Q1 and Q2 are the same, except Q1 has a 21 SEER condensing unit and Q2 has a 17 SEER. Why would cooling capacity go UP with the 17 SEER? Same coil, same blower, different condensing unit. #1 21SEER condenser 96.6% furnace Coil AHRI: Cooling Capacity 57000 BTuh EER Rating: 12.20 SEER: 15.5 #2 17SEER 96.6 Furnace Coil AHRI Cooling Capacity 57500Btuh EER 12.3 SEER: 15.5 Then Contractor 1, Q2 has the same 17 SEER condensing unit, but with an 80% furnace. Also, this quote has a slightly different coil number, 6124 instead of 6024. See here that the SEER goes up to 16.5, and cooling capacity increases as well. AHRI Cooling Capacity 59500Btuh EER 13.2 SEER 16.5 --- I'm not trying to hit every rebate I can. It's just frustrating that some are just barely out of reach with what seem to be pretty efficient systems. You really have to go all out to get them.

I just scheduled for Chris to come out for an estimate next week.

The contractor did mention that they will not change the existing duct work in the attic because that would probably cost more than the systems.

Does a 15 seer differ a lot from 17 seer in terms of energy cost saving?

It's unlikely all the ductwork needs to be replaced at 11 years old. However, changes and improvements for better flow can often easily be done especially when in the attic. Good luck and please keep us posted.
