Lennox/Rheem Heat Pump Quotes--Help!!!

Just received some new quotes and I am SHOCKED at the pricing.

Was interested in a Trane and was told they are sold out of their variable speed compressors and he can not get any right now. My HP is down, so we need a new unit ASAP with 110 degree days.

All HP are 4 ton units and there will be $2500 in additional duct work costs.

Lennox--XP21 $10,501-variable with Lennox I comfort Thermostat

XP14 $7402-single speed with digital 5/2 prgm thermostat.

AND

Rheem-RPR1-JEC-$8,906 Variable speed -touchscreen prog. thermostat

RPQL-JE2-$7,853 Variable speed-digital 5/2 prgm thermostat.

Is this totally out of line? Reputable company with good ratings but seems very expensive. However, he might have us over a barrel.

Rheem/Rudd is one of the most overlooked and underrated HVAC brands in the residential market.

Here is my personal checklist.

Obviously correct sizing is important. If you are unsure, then request a
load calculation or even perform it yourself for a nominal fee online.

there are three equally important components-quality HVAC, the install by dealer, and probably the most overlooked and disregarded is the ductwork system.

these are my minimum specs for a new HP system. both outside and
inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system.

15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF
best matching VS air handler
full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size
R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron)
scroll compressor preferred
electronic demand defrost preferred
thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature
staged backup heat strips
new and correctly sized refrigerant line set

you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall
condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc.

any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed.

I would only use authorized dealers for the various brands that provide quotes.

see mfg websites.

I would look at Trane/AmStd,Rheem/Rudd,Carrier/Bryant.

Depending on your location, I would not purchase a new HP system that
did not have electronic demand defrost.

Pricing varies between markets, brands, and models.

Thank you so much for your input...we are in Phoenix so heating is used vary sparingly and humidity is not an issue. It's all A/C, 9 months out of the year with heat used at nights the other 3 months.

Load calc was done and I believe it's correct. The ducting will be replaced for an additional $2500 and it needs to be.

We are leaning to the Lennox as it is the best deal with the highest SEER rating. We will just get the manufacturers extended warranty because we know nothing about Lennox. We have a Rheem with zero problems for 19 years until now but the higher SEER unit is more expensive than the Lennox and like I said, we use the A/C 24 hours a day, almost year round.

Trane's sister company is American Standard and for the most part especially on furnaces is similar if not identical. Condensers are different mainly cosmetics and cabinetry. Lennox has no relationship to Trane other than being another HVAC company and competitor. As far as Greenspeed HPs, I would not advise them where nat gas service is available. As said in prior posts, Rudd/Rheem is probably one of the most underrated and overlooked HVAC brands in residential marketplace. Solid equipment. IMO

Sylvia Non coastal location? I prefer a small dealer where owner is actively involved in business, sales and service/repair. Not a fan of Lennox heat pumps. Here is my checklist. That was the ideal combo I found when looking the furnace and air conditioner you spec'd. The mod is a great furnace for the best indoor comfort is sized properly, but you're right that those numbers aren't fantastic on the heat pump. Though the 8.7 HSPF is what matters in heating, and that's not too bad. I'm assuming in Canada you don't use too much A/C? What are the requirements for the rebate in your area? The Amana should be an okay system. If looking for a good system for indoor comfort abilities, I suggest you do some research online at Carrier's Infinity system. If you use another brand--and there are many good brands out there, including Rheem, Trane, Lennox, and others--I suggest the VisionPRO IAQ thermostat from Honeywell to control the dual fuel setup. Hope this helps. You have to do lots of research with HVAC to get the best system, but it's worth it in the long run.

Are you keeping the oil backup or switching to a straight heat pump system? From your post I gather that you are getting rid of the oil heat, which to me sounds like a good idea. If it's an old oil system, that might account for a decent part of the install cost, for its removal. The $11,000 price tag does sound high up front, but we can't see every detail of the job from here. My advice: get two or three estimates. Make sure they size the equipment properly. An oversized system will never be efficient or provide the most comfort. Most of the horror stories you hear are more install related than brand related. Lennox makes a good product. As does Trane, Carrier, York, Rheem, etc. Most of your concerns should be focused on finding the best company to do the work. If you are in Montgomery County, you can email me and I can give you some honest opinions on the companies you've had out, from what I know/have heard.
