Should I replace duct work & furnace

I bought a one story 1900 square foot house built in '69 last year. Duct work is in the floor, but the air flow is very weak in parts of the house. The heat seems to work ok, but generates a lot of heat around the furnace (seem to be leaks in the ductwork connecting furnace and rest of house). When we try to use air conditioning, air blows, but is not cool. We had several repairman come under our home warranty policy and they say air conditioning is "technically working" even though it doesn't cool the house. We are tired of trying to fix things piecemeal and think we need to just replace part or all of the system. The outside 2 ton air conditioning unit is about 13 years old. The current gas furnace is an entry level Trane, and about 3 years old. A couple of HVAC companies told us they would use the existing duct work, but replace the furnace with a variable unit (Carrier #58CVA070-12, 80% efficient), and that would solve our problem. One company suggested replacing the floor duct work with duct work in the attic (which they said would help air flow), replacing the air conditioner with a 3 ton Carrier (#24ACC624) and the coil (#CNPVP2417) but keep the furnace (which is not variable speed). All of these estimates are in the 6-10k range. What makes the most sense? Replace duct work only, replace furnace only with variable speed, or replace everything?

My first suggestion is to stop wasting time with the home warranty company. The people they send are typically not qualified when it comes to an HVAC system.

What is your location, and what the typical winter low and summer high temperatures?

It sounds like your current duct work has issues. Does this house have a basement and is the duct work accessible? I suggest it be thoroughly inspected and fixed as needed. The supplies and returns must be properly sized and sealed. Installing a variable speed furnace on a poor duct system will only create more problems.

I think you should try to salvage your three year old Trane furnace. I would rather see you get a matched Trane coil and condenser. If you have the budget, then replacing the furnace and AC would be the best solution. The Carrier furnace you mentioned is the top of the line for 80% efficiency. Depending on your climate you may want to spend to extra money on a 95%+ efficiency furnace. This may qualify you for additional local rebates.

If your current ducts are inside the house, changing to ducts outside the house (attic) will be a big step backwards. Try not to do that.

I would advise thoroughly investigating a new boiler system and keeping the radiators as a lot can be done with modern hydronic systems. They are very efficient, up to about 96%; they can be wall mounted and are very compact taking up no floor space at all. They can also incorporate an instantaneous domestic hot water capability so you would not require a reservoir tank or separate device. Also they are quiet and induce no drafts. High efficiency condensing gas boilers can be side vented meaning that the present condition of the chimney may not be a factor at all. Having NG means that you can have a gas stove, dryer, fireplace and outdoor BBQ. A gas stove and fireplace would mean that you would have access to heat and cooking during a power failure. Keep in mind that a hydronic system, particularly one with cast iron radiators, is fully compatible with a geothermal heat pump that can provide heating, domestic hot water and central cooling without ever having to install duct work. Keeping the hydronic system will also maintain the original look and feel of the home as well as its heritage value as time goes by. Any renovation or new addition could also include radiant in-floor heating with the hydronic boiler system. This is particularly nice in kitchens and bathrooms. These are highly prized features when it's time to sell. Even with, or dare I say especially with the 'old' cast iron radiators, a modern hydronic system in the 21st century is NOT your parent's heating system at all! SR

Yeah that's R22 and while that is a builder grade Trane unit that is probably out of warranty by now... typically those were sold with 5 year parts warranty. Because R22 Freon was already obsolete by 2013. With that said, this condenser 'could' last another 10 years, provided the coil repair work is done appropriately. The replacement coil needs to be a coil suitable for R22 / any coil can be retro fitted to work, but skill is required in choosing the coil. Typically home warranty companies are known for tom foolery. If the condenser was a dry condenser (nitrogen gas) it would say it was on the data plate in some manner. That's the down side in anything Trane or American Standard because they were one of the last manufacture's to switch over to R410a refrigerant. The R22 conundrum only effects you if there is a leak... otherwise it doesn't matter much. While the cost for it will only go up now that production has ceased, it's serviceable life is still around another 10 years or so. Without United Technologies Corporation heavy investment in R410a AC equipment development we would be no where near where we are today. R410a equipment has been available now for almost 20 years if you can imagine that.

Thanks, tigerdunes... We currently have a Lennox furnace model #G24M. As for size, the inside plate says "rated output: 82,000 BTUH AGA/CGA; 73,000 CGA only"; is this the size? Several of the contractors we've gotten bids from have also suggested a HP, so we are getting quotes on those, as well as solo ACs. I'm not ready to chuck gas altogether, especially given that we occasionally have really cold stretches and I don't want to count solely on a HP...but the combo with gas sounds like a good option. I guess ultimately my question is whether I should take this opportunity to upgrade the furnace to get a variable speed blower in order to make all systems more efficient? And, if so, would it be worthwhile to go with a high efficiency 90%+, or stay with an 80%? Another quandry I'm facing is that all 5 bids we've gotten have suggested a zoned system. The system as it exists covers basement and first level, but the addition of a sunroom 13 years ago has thrown the air flow off to be less that comfortable. The sun room faces south, has 3 walls of windows and 4 skylights, and a vaulted ceiling. At the time, the ac was upgraded to a 3 ton unit, but the manual Js we've had with the current bids show that the addition alone requires a 2 ton unit. We've gotten opinions all over the board whether the ducting is a large part of the problem, though most agree that they would have done a better job of ducting during the addition if they had handled the job. The opinions differ on whether things are worth fixing. I've read threads about the pros and cons of zoning, and it looks like the cost would add $2.5-3000 to whatever else we do with the system. I'm not really picky about temps (we run 77 in summer, 68 in winter simply to not waste resources). It has also been suggested that some manual dampers might be a good first step to see how it balances the cooling load (an imperfect, though vastly less expensive option). Do you have any words of wisdom for me? We haven't gotten all the bids back yet, but assuming they're comparable for similar work, I have a good level of confidence in the Bryant, Trane, and American Standard dealers. I do not understand why he would oversize the BTUH of the equipment way above what the ductwork sizing will support at reasonable static pressures & FPM velocities. A tech may have to figure out another way to run ducts to those rooms. The linked page will provide some guidelines toward proper duct sizing. It appears you would not need much air conditioning tonnage. Thank you for the information. I think you are right about the home warranty company. We have not had good experiences so far, and the companies that have come out always find something to charge for that isn't covered under the warranty. For example, one company came out to see why the air conditioner wasn't working, added Freon (not covered by warranty), and the system didn't improve at all. We are located in Northern Virginia, and so far it is the heat that has bothered us most. The duct work is between the slab and the floor, so it is pretty inaccessible. It looks dirty when we open up the registers, and it is quite possible there might be minor blockages along the way because of root damage etc. I am open to installing new ducts in the attic, but I thought that given that the attic is quite hot in the summer, this might create some other inefficiences. However, if there is a problem with the existing floor duct work, there is almost no way to fix it without tearing up the floors. I was hoping to salvage the Trane furnace, but would it work ok if it were paired with the new Carrier air conditioner(#24ACC624) and the coil (#CNPVP2417) (the company that gave us this estimate doesn't deal in Trane), or would it be better to pay a couple of thousand more and just get the new 80% gas furnace too (16 SEER rating we are told with the new furnace, 14 seer, with just the air conditioning and coil).

Home warranty company "system is performing normally"
Home owner " system does not blow cold air"
Semms to me that Home warranty company is 'performing Normally' as they follow their script.
Installing new equipment will not fix ductwork problem BTW.

You need to address the duct system first. If you do not you are wasting your money on new equipment.

A 2 ton air conditioner for a 1900 sq ft 1960's ranch house in Virginia seems undersized. Did the contractor do a load calculation to come up with this size? If no, continue looking for other contractors.

You can connect the Carrier coil and condenser to the Trane furnace. The efficicency rating will be unknown since this it is not a verified match.
