MRI, not so bad

Because of some ear problems I've been having this last month the doctor ordered an MRI to check out my eustation tubes and head area.

I have to say I was kind of worried about being in that tube and feeling claustrophobic. Although I'm pretty good at self talk and relaxing I am not good at laying on my back. (scar tissue on spine) After a couple of Xanax (I think) I was feeling pretty serene and was comfortable. They put my head in some coil, cage thing and slide me in the hole. I didn't dare open my eyes and for the next 45 mins I thought about Disney world, the beach and what my kids were up to at home. Ok, I did peek for a moment but that was just enough to make me keep them closed. Ahh, I really hate tight places. They did give me the sqeeze ball just in case I wanted out but all I did was sweat on it.

The sound the MRI machine makes is like being on a one sided shoot out Or maybe a band tuning up before a concert. Very odd and interesting I kept thinking. I felt successful in my latest adventure, especially being claustraphobic. I would love to see the views they took since I'm sure they will ask for payment of them!

I'm wondering...

What has your experience been with MRI? Did you get to see the results?

My first one was a nightmare. Not because of space issues, but pain. I had ruptured a disc in my neck and was unable to lie flat. I went in without my pain meds and had to wait for someone to come give me a shot so they could get me into the machine. The second one was fine, just really loud.

I was terrified and had to have my neck and all the rest of the spine done. I took a tranquilizer but it didn't start working until I got almost home. I had the ball as well but didn't need to use it. They told me the noise would be like a motor boat hum but I found it more like a jack hammer. I thought of words that went with the rythm and kept repeating them. All was fine. I wouldn't dread another one. They are a wonderful testing tool.

I got the results later from my specialist.

I was in terrible pain too with ruptured disc and degenerated ones - 4 in my neck and 3 in my lower back.

In most raccoons the most common disease is cat distemper which can cause foaming at the mouth. As far as leaving goodies out please don't. It could cause them to become less afraid of humans and then be hurt by someone. Raccoons are very intelligent and probably raid your garden but since you have room plant extra for them. From my experience they do not like green beans or carrots. They will dig in the dirt to eat any grubs or earthworms and can disturb your plants. Don't bother planting corn except for them. (you can plant a smaller patch just for the animals near to the fence. This might distract from the main garden). Teach both of your young ones, toddler and husband, not to go near the animals either to pet or chase.

I used to grow Stupice and prefer Matina which is a look alike in all ways except I think the taste is better and it too is early and productive and have tried Kimberly and Bloody Butcher as well. But what I currently like the best is Moravsky Div, which is very early and for me has great taste. There were four different Stupicka's developed in Czechoslovakia, two for outdoor growing and two for glass house growing. At another site there's been a very long thread about Moravsky Div and there appears to be some agreement with research done with Moravoseed and other places in Europe that Moravsky Div may be one of the indoor ones but grows great outside as well. In my experience the fruits of MD are a bit smaller than conventional Stupice or Matina but the taste is much much better and it has performed well for me in my area all summer. Below is a link to Tania's T-base for seed sources and I was the source of seed to Glecklers, Jeff Casey, Sandhill and Victory Seeds, where I usually send the best of what I've grown each year. I also send to Linda Sapp at TGS but she's very behind in trialing varieties right now. Glenn Drowns comment at Sandhill amused me b/c he notes in his catalog/website that he put out 4 inch transplants and had fruits 43 days later. The MRI showed I have degenerative disc disease which I knew from the last MRI I had. It hasn't gotten worse since three years ago which it the good news. I just have to live with it until it gets so bad they replace the discs (hopefully never!) My dr told me to lose weight and exercise so thats my plan. I am feeling a lot less pain and have been doing things but I'm waiting still longer to start walking. Vicky

Sorry you had to reschedule. I always just want to get whatever test done and over with. My sister had to have rotator cuff surgery done about 6 or 7 years ago. She said the MRI was horrible. It took over half an hour, she was in severe pain, and was shaky trying to walk afterwards. She said she would never do it again. Very glad you get the sit in kind next week. Best of luck for a good outcome.

I had an MRI of my neck, actually my thyroid gland. Had to lie still with a metal mask over my face. Luckily they had rigged up a mirror I could see people in the room. And I could hear. Two nurses had a very lively conversation. The time whizzed past. They gave me a "panic button" to push if I got too closed-in-feeling, but I was determined to do this test only once. Piece of cake. My throid's okay,too!

I'm hoping my last one was just that..."my LAST one"
It was four hours the first day...couldn't get the picture clear enough...Had me come back the second day for three more hours. It was all I could do to crawl back up there.
When it was all said and done I found out they saw what they were supposed to find right away but then found another tear (that was about 30 years old and didn't bother me at all) AND they couldn't fix what they were supposed to be looking for anyway.

I honestly don't think I can do it again.

DH had one yesterday because of a neck issue. (Well, a shoulder and elbow issue, but doc wanted to look at the neck first...*sigh*)

DH said he could feel little "sticks" where the beam (?) was hitting him. Could that be right? I've never had one but was surprised to hear him say that.

Toni,

If you want to see the MRI images, just ask your doctor. Why wouldn't he show them?

Chances are he's going to show you any images that have anything important on them anyway.

I'm glad it went well Toni and hope they can pinpoint your problems...ear probs really mess you up all over...your balance, nausea...just everything...I got a DVD both times I had an MRI last year...not that I could make heads or tails out of what I was looking at...Like you...I just visualized whatever for the 50 minutes...

Liz, your so right. I didn't go to work for a week when this all started. In your job it would be awful to have ear problems.

Mary, I so agree but the way some doctors are I sometimes have to tell them what they should do. I've had varying xrays over the years. Some stand me there and point things out. Some just tell me what they think and I'm out of there. The older I get the more I ask for things I wish to know. Guess I'm the visual learner. Anyway I think it would be interesting to see the MRI scan. I wish I could take them home!
Okwriter, I've never heard of that before either. Maybe he's magnetized. J/K

It appears it makes a big difference on what is being scanned. I can't imagine being in pain and having to lay still for such a long time. Drugs are our friend when it comes to that stuff.
I had mine done last night too. The techs said they would be there until 10 pm doing the last planned MRI. I don't know why I'm thinking about the sound so much but, LOL, I've decided that the sound the machine makes is like listening to a Star wars fight scene without the music.

Moni would be happy to know they let me keep my red shirt on during the procedure. Keeping the faith for everyone who needs it.

I didn't like the MRI at all. It was of my thigh, but I had to go in to my head to get the whole thigh. I begged to be allowed to put my hands above my head which wouldn't make me feel so constrained. They they said OK if I promised not to move them. I didn't move, but by the time I was done my arms felt like cold wood. Next time I'll take whatever relaxing medication they offer, and I will NOT open my eyes.

The people were very nice. I was surprised at how small the tube was.

I didn't see the results.
