Did I make it? This will be my first:)

Pouring rain here in New York.

I have my nephew's b'day party tomorrow (he is 6) and my cousin's daughter on Sunday (she is 7). My dh's brother is also flying in today from Florida for a wedding - so we will see him at some point.

I'm up! I slept in today a little bit. Staying home from work today, I am too exhausted to go in. It's been a rough week, but I think we have our ducks in a row, now.

Maggie, you sure have a busy weekend ahead of you! But it will be fun to be surrounded by friends and family.

Today I am cleaning and will practice making the spring rolls for tomorrow. Having 12 girlfriends over tomorrow for a crafting party, martini bar and sleepover. Should be fun!

Spring weather is FINALLY here! Saw dozens of robins yesterday and a bluebird, too! Snow is alomst gone and soon I'll be out digging in the dirt! Can't wait!

Maggie, pouring rain means Spring is coming:-) Still, I hope it stops soon so you're not stuck in the house all day. Have fun with the family birthday parties, and make sure you stuff yourself with lots of cake!

Linda, I'm so happy for you that Spring is finally arriving in your neck of the woods. I'm sure everyone was getting cabin fever. I copied and pasted your spring roll recipe, since fresh spring rolls are a huge favorite of mine. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that your crafting party goes well, and enjoy that martini bar!

As for us, the boys start Spring Break after today, and the 4 of us are traveling to Key Largo with another family to rent a house for the week. We'll snorkel, swim and hopefully gets lots of relaxation. So today, I'm packing like mad, taking care of last minute things like the mail and newspapers, etc. I hope to bring back a big stash of Key limes from someone's tree! A very happy 2008 to everyone! Katie, I agree with the others..drag the dog along, oh wait you meant your husband. See, Joe has the same idea! Linda, are you on the same coast as me? ItÂs been quite blustery for the last few days And yesterday later in the day it started raining and didnÂt stop til about an hour ago..now the sun is out but the wind is still whippin. The candles are always ready here, the only thing I do once we get a few flickers is fill up some pitchers of water..I can cook and heat the house (gas)..so the only thing we suffer from is toilet flushing. LOL Sharon, The Last Supper..now that is cheeky. LOL And what is it with the dishwasher duty? David - have a great time with your group! Sorry about the Sooners and sorry about Sam Bradford. Hope the shoulder heals quickly. Claire, happy gardening! I have daylilies and hostas to move too, but I am waiting until it cools off here a little first. We are finally getting warm summery weather this weekend LOL! Sharon, I am so jealous of your being able to spend the fall at the cottage after the summer people are gonw. That was always my favorite time of year in Ogunquit - saying goodbye to the tourists! Enjoy your time and Clive bcskye, sounds like a blast! What sort of horse show is it? I used to ride hunters (and a few jumpers) back in the day, but I love all sorts of equestrian competitions. Have a great time with the family too. Linda, OGM! 1200?!?!?!? There are going to be some happy pooches and you are a dear for the labor of love. Katie - sounds like a wonderful way to spend the weekend. As David says - dance like no one is watching! Annie, glad to hear those beanies are going to good use. And happy canning! Somehow it all does get dome though - an enjoy your time off, you deserve it! I had my second jewelry class on Friday - I just love it. Working on a multi metal (copper and brass) pendant to learn my skills. I will post photos as I complete projects. Fri night was out with friends for Happy Hour, yesterday was relaxing at home and getting totally caught up on Mad Men. I am TOTALLY addicted to that show now! Today we are having another couple over for a BBQ - sometimes it is nice not to have a gang and just sit and enjoy a quiet evening with grown up conversation. Tomorrow we are thinking about going to the NJ shore (I am cringing at the thought, I don't care for the shore) so we'll see. Maybe I will send the men folk off and have a canning day to myself. floral, the "Ethical Trade Initiative" mentioned in that article contains no actionable information. In fact the article suggests that membership in that organization may actually mean nothing since the members may be cheating. This is an area where a rich foundation could make a difference by doing spot audits on firms and providing ratings, perhaps across a broad spectrum of industry types in India. If a credible third party publishes an expose and highlights firms that behave responsibly, I would steer business that direction. But the way in which you have structured your facts makes two invalid arguments: 1) You are implying that all Indian granite firms exploit children. Maybe most do, but it is not a valid argument to say that because there is evidence of many exploiting children that all exploit children. 2) You are implying that these children will have better lives without these jobs. That is very utopian thinking, and moreover it denies the human being who is affected any input or opinion to your thought process. My guess is that the lives of these children will be even more horrible without these jobs than with them. That's something we in the West turn a blind eye to. We feel moral satisfaction in taking away their jobs, and then we pretend not to see the even greater suffering that we caused by our moral actions. Curing poverty in India is very hard, but I guess the general course of affairs for countries it to accumulate wealth, and to then become more socialist and provide support for the poor. How do you do that *today* in a country where 10% of the population has good jobs or wealth and 90% live in poverty?

M J, Frontloaders are much superior washing performance to the HE "impeller" toploaders. Washing a comforter or other large/bulky items in those is an exercise in futility, there's no way the impeller can overcome gravity to entice the item to roll over for thorough washing. A frontloader by design lifts and rolls the items over through the wash (and rinse) water. As others have said, stay away from washing everything in cold water. Even a designated "Cold Wash" cycle. While it's true that many machines nowadays add some hot or warm water to the fill on a Cold setting so the water in the tub is minimum 60°F to 70°F, using cold exclusively for everything has a large chance of causing mold/residue/odor in the machine, as well as shortening the service life of it. I recently repaired a Samsung frontloader that was destroyed by bad laundry habits in 4 years 11 months. Liquid fabric softener was used on every load to large doses and too much cold washing led to waxy residue on the exterior of the drum (where clothes don't rub on it) that corroded the drum support. The drum broke loose during spin and wore a gash in the outer tub. The machine has an onboard water heater with 1) a Sanitize cycle that heats to 150°F, a Heavy cycle that heats to 115°F, and a tub cleaning cycle that heats to 140°F. Regular use of any/all of those cycles would have kept the waxy residue from accumulating. I tested the designated Normal cycle and a couple others on it, and with 130°F+ input temp from my water heater, I got 80°F on Warm and 92°F on Hot. Consider the difference between 80°F (which is less the body temp) and 115°F or 140°F regards to dissolving waxy residue or greasy laundry soils ... and it becomes clear why washing primarily or more-often-than-not in cold water is not a good thing. One may not see residue insidethe drum where the clothes rub but it accumulates where the clothes (and you) can't reach ... on the outside of the drum and on the inside of outer tub.

I can see grass in about 50% of the yard. There's still huge piles of snow to melt. But it is better if it goes gradually...

Donna, have fun on spring break... pick lots of limes.

Quiet for now around here. This weekend I have some projects lined up for Kim to help me with. We'll see what gets accomplished.

Maggie - we are having Birthday celebrations here too. My DS#2 is turning 7! When the boys were really little and bugging me about what we were having for dinner (usually so the older picky one could start complaining well in advance) I started telling them we were having "Squid Lips and Fish Eyes" and that would send them running and they would soon be distracted by something else and leave me to finish dinner. When I asked the little "gourmand" what he wanted for a special Birthday dinner he responded with "Mom, you used to tell us we were having Squid Lips and Fish Eyes... can you make that with garlic and put it over penne?"

I about fell over! First, I didn't think he was old enough to remember that expression from long ago, and second what kind of kid would ask for something like that! LOL! Anyway, he finally decided on Ceaser Salad, King Crab, steamed broccoli, penne with olive oil and garlic and pound cake with fresh berries and whipped cream for dessert. This I can manage!

Linda - have a blast with your girlfriends, it sounds like lots of fun.

Nany enjoy the projects. It always feels so good to cross them off the list.

Sharon have a great weekend at the cottage.

Donna hope you have wonderful weather. I could use a dose of the beach right now.

We actually have a busy weekend in addition to the Birthday. Tomorrow is DS#2 first ever baseball game, then the birthday party tomorrow late afternoon. Sunday is Regional Pine Box Derby (give me strength) so there will be thousands of cub scouts (well okay, maybe only a hundred or so) wilding about with little homemade cars to race. Sunday night is the big Birthday dinner and then a stiff after dinner drink for mom.

Hi all! I'm dogsitting so I was up early today. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Maggie- Sounds like a busy but fun weekend, hope the weather clears up for the parties.

Linda- Spring rolls sound yummy! And that party sounds like a lot of fun! Have a great time!

Donna- Have a wonderful time in Key Largo (how could you not!?). My son heads back to school on Monday, they were on break this week.

As for us, well it is suppose to be a beautiful weekend. 53 today, and in the 60's Sat and Sun! Yeah! Spring is finally here. I actually wore a spring dress yesterday with some espadrilles! I dog sat yesterday and am on duty until about 3PM today, then the weekend can begin.

I am excited because I am having my first driving lesson on Monday, I'm still trying to decide when to tell my husband I actually got my driving permit. He's been bugging me to do it for years. I'm afraid if I tell him, and he takes me out to practice, that he will yell at me and make me nervous. He's not the most patient person in the world, not even close actually!

Alexa- have a great weekend, hope you can find time to catch your breath with everything that is going on this weekend! Your son sounds like mine, when I was that age I did not even know what King Crab or Ceasar Salad were! I don't think I had either until after I was married a few years!

Happy birthday to everyone who's having one. I don't think Caesar Salad was even invented when I was seven, and the only crabs I'd ever eaten were the little crawfish we caught in the lake and boiled. LOL

Maggie, party hard!! Kiss those little fat baby cheeks for me too, before those babies of yours get too big for it.

Alexa, good luck to your son in that first ball game. Have another drink, BEFORE the cub scouts get there. (grin) I'll have a piece of that poundcake with you, though.

Nancy, I still have big piles of snow too, but the steelhead are running and the ground is slowly thawing, spring is coming late, but it's coming! I should get some "stuff" done around here too, but I don't know.

I have two very pregnant cows (and three not so pregnant cows, LOL), so I'm hoping for a new baby or two by the time I get there Sunday. Thank goodness they waited until the weather broke, at least a little.

Alexa -- love that story about your son -- he sounds like a gourmand in the making! Crab legs sound great.

And Joanne -- good for you for learning to drive! Very wise to hire a driving instructor, as it is critical to learn with a patient and accepting person.

I'm excited because I'm having a dinner party tomorrow, with people who are really fun and, most importantly, good and non-picky eaters! Yay for gluttony!

TGIF on this Friday that begins Spring Break for me! I have an entire week of NO SCHOOL! And when we return, there are only 3 weeks left in the semester. I'm so happy I could SCREAM.

We went straight from winter to summer here in NW Florida. It's in the mid 80's every day now. 80% chance of rain tonight and all day tomorrow. Erin, my 7-year-old, has a birthday party to attend for a boy in her class at a place called "Pump It Up" - they have all kinds of those Moonwalk thingies. And since it's at night, they are to wear their pajamas. What a hoot!

No big plans for us - maybe a bit of baking together and watching some movies. Hope you all have a good 'un!

Leaving for Las Vegas in about an hour. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!

Three other friends and myself have coordinated a spa weekend retreat for ourselves. Deep massages and Mimosas here we come!

They put me in a round room and told me to sit in the corner.....that sums up up my life for the last several weeks. I plan on getting the heck out if it this weekend...lol!

Tomorrow I'm doing some shopping with DM and DS. Man, trying to decorate a real house is a full time job...I'm taking my time with it so it will still be some time before it's done....I'm thinking at least a year..

Sunday will be chores and some yard work. I have a landscape guy coming out to tell what all of this stuff is in my yard....what to keep, what to trim back, and what to replace. Now that things are budding out the rest of the damage from the ice storm are showing up...

Tonight is cleaning, cocktails, catching up here.....I'm thinking I need a cleaning lady and or a riding vacuum...

LOL David. Yes, get a housekeeper - I tried to do it myself for awhile after remodeling, but called mine back after weeks of that drudgery. I'm too busy. I need to get on it as far as decorating too. I have whole rooms with no lights in them!

I have you-know-what practice tonight. Birthday dinner for a couple whose b-days are 2 days apart tomorrow night at a Persian place. Shopping for last-minute b-day gifts for the 2 of them tomorrow daytime, along with banking, coloring and trimming my hair and trimming DH's hair (yup, I do that), grocery shopping, dog walking, buying tix for some upcoming trips - we have lots of cc miles built up for that. Lessons on Sunday - is that enough stuff?

:-) Gah, I need retirement, please! When do I get to cook?!

Gotta go - grab a bite to eat before ping pong. Byeeee!!!
