It's very confusing trying to plan cabinets. At least it was for me :-) I have a 52" run with a bar sink. Do you know if you will be getting full overlay or inset cabinets? I have full overlay, so my comments will be about those. A few things to know: For an 18" drawer, the front of the drawer is 18" The 2 sides of the cabinet box (3/4" x 2 = 1.5") The 2 sides of the drawer (1/4" x 2 = .5") Room for the slides on the side to attach the drawer = about .5" So the actual width inside the cabinet frame is 16.5" The actual width inside the drawer is 15.5" (Hope you're still with me :-) Can't find my camera) Since you know you want a trash pullout, you should start with that. I think the question you need to ask the cabinet guy is what kind of trash pullout he'll use (how wide). They're usually either 15" or 18". You'll probably want one with a 50 qt bin (=12.5 gal). (That's the biggest, I think). 35 qt is 8.75 gal. They seem big when you're looking at the pictures, but make sure it's big enough for your needs. Then you should find a sink you like and show the cabinet guy the specs to see what size cabinet you'll need. Much better than trying to find a sink to fit a too small cabinet, believe me :-) Even if you haven't picked out the exact sink, you can have a couple possibilities to use as an example. Specs are available online for most. What's left over will be your drawer size. Other things to consider: The usual overhang for a countertop is 1.5". (I thought mine would be 1.5", but they measured from the cabinet face, not the drawer face which was another 3/4", so mine ended up about 3/4".) So if you're planning a 36" wide island, the cabinets below will be about 3" less or 33". Standard cabinet depth is 24", so you'd have about 9" (and maybe minus another 3/4" for the box on the other side of the island to do something with. Maybe ask the cabinet guy for his opinion on that for your options. Hope I haven't totally confused you! I'm sure others will have suggestions, too. Keep in mind that there are so many posts that sometimes yours will move off the front pages pretty quickly, and people might not see it...so it's fine to bump it. HTH! Good luck!

I completely understand not wanting the refrigerator to be the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. That probably would've been the ideal location for me, but I just didn't want to see that big appliance and my kitchen is only 13 ft. wide, so I felt it would be right in my face when I first walked in. In alot of ways, my layout looks very similar to yours. Range on outside wall, clean up sink on side wall and prep sink in island. My frig/freezer/pantry area is also in a similar location as yours(further over to one side in a vestibule area), but again, my kitchen is only 13 ft. wide. Yours grows I guess to about 17' at the widest point(frig wall to range wall). You might want to put frig drawers in the island for your most used prep items. That would help the walking. I also like the frig location better in the plan you just posted. Like I said, direct shot down the aisle. I do have a concern about your proposed new eating area. That seems really far to me from the frig. Imagine trying to clean up condiments, drinks, etc. after dinner. I'd think I'd be using the DR on a daily basis instead.

I'm with you--non-issue. There are plenty of examples of islands with seating on two sides. Google search--island with seating on adjacent sides. Store your dishes in the upper cabinets to the right of the cooktop - that will keep them and anyone unloading the DW or setting the table out of your primary work zones. Put your trash pullout in the island next to the sink (opposite side from the DW). I wish you were open to other changes - the island is currently a barrier b/w the Prep Zone in the island and the refrigerator and b/w the Cooking Zone/cooktop and the refrigerator. I'd rather see your pantry on the left side with your Cooking and Cleanup Zones on the perimeter and your Prep Zone either on the island or b/w the cooktop and sink. If you at least switched the oven and the refrigerator, the island would no longer be a barrier. How wide will the workspace be in your Prep Zone? I hope at least 36" (42" would be much, much better). Your Prep Zone is in the island - opposite side from the DW - b/c that's the only water source. Note that much of your counterspace is wasted b/c it isn't located where it can be useful. You're cramming the Prep and Cleanup Zones in a rather narrow island and have all the unused counterspace on either side of the cooktop. 1.5" overhang + 38" cabinets/workspace + 30" sink + 24" DW + 1" support wall for the DW + 1.5" overhang = 96" (8')
