Need help with island-pics included
Comments (1)everybody jumping in at once? Maybe a non-plant item, like a fountain or urn, perhaps accented with a bench, would give it some punch, & you might move the flowering almond toward the outside perimeter so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle. You could also post on your regional forum, Michigan Gardening maybe? or Northern Gardening? Best luck!...See MoreNeed some help in staging... Pics included
Comments (23)Regarding the foyer ,,, what is going on at the base of the staircase (by the pony wall)? It almost looks like a bar/sink or counter? I'm also assuming that's a coat closet under the stairs? My first thought was a round entry table with flowers (I love that look), then entering the house you go right of the table to go up the steps or to an "entry area" at the base of the steps with a bench. And I also see a reading nook on the other side of the foyer. If a round table doesn't work ,,, another option might be a long console table on the backside of the reading nook to help lead people into the house. A few more photos of that area would be helpful (including a shot or two taken coming down the steps). I would also treat the window in the stairwell, so the windows on each side of the front door are "in balance". I feel like the house is suffering from identity crisis. The "arts and crafts" style cabinets in the kitchen, the "tropical" ceiling fans, the "contemporary" arch/pendants over the bar, the "shabby chic" drapes and "hollywood glam" cocktail table in the tv area, etc, etc, etc and then there's that fireplace mantel. For staging purposes, I would try to clean that up. Some stuff you are stuck with ,,, for example, the curved arch over the bar with that funky archway to the right of the fireplace (created by the stairwell) and then the square archway to the left of the fireplace. Maybe it doesn't look that bad in person, but to me those lines look "off", so I would try to minimize them. This is where I think the paint color and the monochromatic color scheme actually help out. How nice of you to help out your friend ,,, looks like a fun challenge!!...See MorePlease help me design my kitchen island
Comments (16)Is the window over the sink also existing? Because I was thinking that it would be nice to get the stove on the same wall as the sink. It would be better to have the prep area between them, and easier to vent the hood on an exterior wall. Then the microwave could go on a shelf next to the fridge. That area could be snack central for the kids, and maybe a baking area. That would also give you more options for making the island a bit smaller, without a MW drawer. I hesitate to say this because I love my island (work table really), which is 3x5 with seating on one side, with 36" of aisle space. But that side is not up against a wall, which means that there is ample room for shoulders. In your plan, shoulders will be brushing the wall. Any time some one is seated, traffic will have to pass through your work zones. Although I'd love for you to have that wonderful island with seating, I'm starting to see that there probably isn't room for it. Since you have a chance to play with ideas today, consider leaving out the island, but using a smaller rolling cart, instead. I think you could shorten the wide door on the FP side, then wrap cabinets around that corner, over to the broom closet. Since you'll have a nice wide opening on the DR side, the broom closet could be made wider and deeper (the depth of the new cabinets) for more storage. All that storage would make up for losing the cabinets that were planned for the island. You could make some of the cabinets look like the china hutch posted above, with shallower cabinets on each side. The rolling cart could be incorporated into the design, to be out of the way when not in use. It could be a lovely feature to make up for losing the island. Maybe someone with better computer and design skills can elaborate on these ideas. Good luck!...See MoreShould I forego uppers above my stove area? Design pics included!
Comments (27)@benjesbride Yes, the 11'1" will be open to the dining room area(once we knock down that portion of the wall). On the other side of that 3'5" wall is just space that belongs to the living room.. And the the door on the 10'6" wall near the bump is the entrance to the kitchen from the hallway.. The second door should have been removed, sorry for the confusion. It's really a shallow pantry (12") with bifold doors that we're going to close off in order to place cabinets besides the fridge. You're right in that it is tight.. It's not showing on the rendering, but I wanted the island counter to be 3'X6' including the one foot overhang. The space between the island to the bump will be 3'7"... the space between the island and dishwasher is 3'3" and, island to oven is 3'1. I read that minimum passageways through a kitchen is 3' so I was hoping it would work? @mayflowers I'll have to check if it's feasible to move the stove over, since the hood vent will also have to move. That would be ideal though.. If I couldn't move the stove over, would it still be better to still reduce pantry width to at least have longer counter space between the stove and fridge? @emilyam819 here is a drawing with the island rotated.. I left about 3' between island and counters.. and you can see it's quite tight with that bump in the wall. Foregoing seating would make it work, but I really wanted to have seating. @dyhgarden Your kitchen is gorgeous! I love the clean, white look you have going on (this is what I also hope to achieve); it looks so roomy with your high ceilings not to mention that entire wall of built-ins! The patisserie stand is a really nice touch as well. I really like that it's free standing and so I wouldn't have to make holes in my backsplash :) Is your backsplash a hexagon pattern? Thank you so much for sharing!...See MoreBuehl
