Well, if you want a prep sink in the corner, you will not be able to have drawers under that end. But you may be able to have a trash pullout under the sink, and that may be a good use of that space. The sink and trash will probably take up 18 inches in width. If you want a trash pullout that will require 24 inches in depth.
You did not say whether you wanted the seating at the island - if so then I would only put 24" deep drawers or shelving on the other side and leave knee space on the seating side.

Can you provide more info? What do you plan to store there?

I don't plan to having any seating there. I was thinking of storing either cookware or dishes, probably cookware especially if I could get deep drawers.... I was also planning on a trash pullout rather than under the sink. Will it work?

It's very confusing trying to plan cabinets. At least it was for me :-) I have a 52" run with a bar sink.

Do you know if you will be getting full overlay or inset cabinets? I have full overlay, so my comments will be about those.

A few things to know:
For an 18" drawer, the front of the drawer is 18"
The 2 sides of the cabinet box (3/4" x 2 = 1.5")
The 2 sides of the drawer (1/4" x 2 = .5")
Room for the slides on the side to attach the drawer = about .5"

So the actual width inside the cabinet frame is 16.5"
The actual width inside the drawer is 15.5"

Since you know you want a trash pullout, you should start with that. I think the question you need to ask the cabinet guy is what kind of trash pullout he'll use (how wide). They're usually either 15" or 18". You'll probably want one with a 50 qt bin (=12.5 gal). (That's the biggest, I think). 35 qt is 8.75 gal. They seem big when you're looking at the pictures, but make sure it's big enough for your needs.

Then you should find a sink you like and show the cabinet guy the specs to see what size cabinet you'll need. Much better than trying to find a sink to fit a too small cabinet, believe me :-) Even if you haven't picked out the exact sink, you can have a couple possibilities to use as an example. Specs are available online for most.

What's left over will be your drawer size.

Other things to consider:

The usual overhang for a countertop is 1.5". (I thought mine would be 1.5", but they measured from the cabinet face, not the drawer face which was another 3/4", so mine ended up about 3/4".)

So if you're planning a 36" wide island, the cabinets below will be about 3" less or 33". Standard cabinet depth is 24", so you'd have about 9" (and maybe minus another 3/4" for the box on the other side of the island to do something with. Maybe ask the cabinet guy for his opinion on that for your options.

Hope I haven't totally confused you! I'm sure others will have suggestions, too. Keep in mind that there are so many posts that sometimes yours will move off the front pages pretty quickly, and people might not see it...so it's fine to bump it.

Thanks, Julie, very useful information and yes, understandable. I could not seem to find information on the minor but so important info on the actual cabinet, drawer, and hardware dimensions. My mind does not seem to embrace the mechanical detail side of things!

I think we now want to plan the cabinetry as 36" width with an additional countertop overhang. Another question, if planning for an 18" depth drawer, how much cabinet depth do you actually have to have, ?18 inches or more. Another words, with the 36" width, could I have two opposing 18" depth drawers or would I need more width? Thanks so much for your help.

Remember the drawer front is 3/4" thick and I think the back wall of a cabinet box is 3/4" thick also. So the inside of each cabinet would then be about 16 1/2" deep (18 minus 1.5).

The front and back walls of the actual drawer are each 1/2" which leaves about 15 1/2" actual usable depth inside the drawer (actually it may be more like 15 1/4").

It might be a good idea to figure out what you might put in those drawers and see if they fit.

Also keep in mind that your trash pullout and probably your sink will require a full depth cabinet (24").
