Update on my shabby 'mystery' box

I got my shabby "mystery" box today . . .the one I paid .99 + $16 in shipping for. I had been feeling guilty before I got it, wondering if I should pay the seller more.

Well, I don't think I'll pay the seller more. Most of it was (to me) junk. A few items were cute, but I probably would not have bid more than the .99 if I had been able to see everything. I will probably get rid of the majority of what came, so . . .that's my time. (I am absolutely not a pack rat.) Among the cute things were a pillow and bowl (not surprises), a candy dish, and a frame. Among the junk things were a piece of fabric (like a strip, maybe 3" by 12"), very old/rusted measuring cups, and an old alarm clock, frames that are OK but are not currently usable. One of the things I saw in the auction (a cute china cup) arrived broken.

All in all, I think it was a fun experience though I personally would probably not do it again.

99 cents, or 99 dollars? Hey, for a buck you did good! but something tells me it was $99, not .99. lol

No way!!! Not $99! For a buck, yup, it was good. But I really, really, really hate having to sort things to give away (but I hate clutter more), which is why I won't do it again!

Returned from my week in CA today. The new store is beautiful! Much larger than the Fillmore St store. Since it is bigger, they have several of the larger sofas on hand. One is a tufted leather, more masculine and very deep. I wish I had a place for the tufted leather high back settee. The bedding wall is huge and the selection of vintage pieces is nice. Jenny, they do have some new fabrics. Several of them I love. Being in the store makes me want to redo my house....or maybe just build another one and start over. I don't know if they are shown online yet. There is a bit of bad news, but it's temporary. The construction crew working on the build-out next door to the store broke the main water line and 2/3 of the store was flooded. The ladies were quick to grab what they could, the FD showed up quickly and the floor was dry a few hours later. They hope to reopen on Tuesday. It's definitely worth the trip if you're in the area or within an hour or so drive. They also do phone sales and can email pictures/specifications of pieces you are interested in purchasing.

Awwww. Sorry, I hadn't gotten any emails saying I had responses to this thread, so I didn't know so many people replied. I KNOW I checked the box, but it happens often with me for some reason. Allison, thank you so much for that link. I love, love, love roughlinen.com and it gave me some good inspiration. I am really looking forward to working on this room. (BTW...I remember you, of course, from our anxiety-filled kitchen redo days in '04-'05. Your kitchen is one of my faves. I just finished my second kitchen since then. This time it was a new home. Me and kitchens...It's still a love-hate relationship) ;) Natesgram, you'll have to give me until at least next weekend for pictures, since I won't be home until then. I need to correct myself. I shouldn't say I'm almost finished with the headboard. Really, to be more clear, I'm almost finished GATHERING the pieces I want. I've made a few driftwood-esque and aged pieces on my own that came out pretty good, but I'm aiming to make most of it from natural things we find. It sure does take a long time for driftwood to wash up. Could y'all start throwing pieces of wood into the Atlantic when the tide is right to have it wash up on our property, please? ;) I will post updates as I go along, but it's definitely a sloow moving project

Ouch - $17 for a box of crap. You could have done just as well or better at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army.

Double ouch. I hate wasting shipping like that, on things bought sight unseen that I never would have purchased if I'd actually seen them in person. Shipping costs are just too expensive these days!

I think the whole "mystery box" concept seems like a good way to hedge your bets. I wonder what would have gone in the box if it had gone for $20 instead of $1? No way to know but it does make you wonder if rusted measuring cups would have been part of the equation. A 3x12 strip of fabric? What are you supposed to do with that?

kgwlisa, I was thinking the same thing-- I told my DH that maybe I would have gotten better stuff if I'd paid more, but he said, "Or maybe you would have paid more for the same junk." True, true.

Overall, I wouldn't say I was disappointed because I did get a few nice things-- seller risked by starting at .99 and I risked by not seeing what I was getting. So, sort of fun, but I'm not likely to do it again.

DH told me, though, that some people really do not care what is in a mystery box- they just like to be surprised. He checks that Woot site (do any of you know it?) and apparently people get all excited for their mystery BOC (I think it's called that) which is "box of cr@p." He said it usually is JUST junk but people want it anyway!

Sorry you didn't get more good, usable things, Anele. I agree that the shipping prices these days are way too high. At least too high to warrant gambles like that for me personally. I found a great book I wanted this morning. It was only $5 . . . but the s&h was $11. Thanks but no thanks!

Bummer. I know I won't bid on a lot of items because the shipping is already as much as the bid.

Lynn, that shipping price sounds mighty padded. I get my books shipped at from $3.50 to $3.99. I think that's the media mail rate. If the book was on eBay (and they're not allowed to pad shipping like that), you can probably find it at BookFinder. They advertise books for many sellers, so if it's out there, it will likely turn up on their search. Just be careful with the isbn's. There can be a lot of older versions to sort through.

Know what happened? I clicked the ebay link on your earlier post to check out them mystery box auction. Then I did not go to ebay for a while until yesterday. When I got there, the site was featuring pinky flowery shabby chic items for me to look at.

I wish I knew what folders to get rid of to prevent ebay and other sites from recognizing me if I don't log in. I do the "tools/internet options" but apparently that doesn't go deep enough. I had CCleaner but I got a virus and the virus cleaner wiped it out.

Anybody know how to erase this kind of thing?
