Your mom needs to talk with a dietitian for a lits of foods to avoid and those to eat.
Off the top of my head I know hw will have to avoid all salt and even those foods with naturally occurring sodium, and he will have top monitor the amount of sodium he can eat. I also know that broiled fish is a good way for him to get high quality protein with out added salts and minerals.
Your mom needs to have the dietitian at the place where he goes for dialysis to give her a diet plan for him.

GG: My Mother was on Dialysis for several years before she passed. You will need to meet with a dietician for some basic guidelines and for follow up care also. your Dad will be tested each week to check blood levels and you will need to make adjustments as you go on. They should give you a chart each week, indicating what to target, either to reduce or increase levels.

Since each person is so differant while in treatment, work with the staff. The kidney foundation can also give you some help, as well as any support groupd the center may have.

Dialysis is hard, I will not kid you. My best to all of you as you are all effected by this.

One thing that you wil have to watch for is the potasium levels as well as proteins. One may lower while the other needs to be increased.

As for cooking, salt is a definate no in any way. Read all labels carefully and do not add any into cooking. Herbs and spices will help with flavoring foods. We foundthat garlic helps a great deal.

Check out the Davita website, they have great information, also the Kidney Foundation as others have suggested. Dialysis patients need to take specific multivitamin supplements and make sure they get enough high quality protein, as it is lost in the dialysis process. Their labs dictate how restrictive they need to be with sodium, potassium, fluid, and phosphorus. He will likely be taking phosphate binders with each meal. Dialysis centers have registered dietitians who are experts in working with the specialized needs of these patients so that is very important that you get to know him/her and ask any questions you have. Thank you all so much. Have checked some of the web sites you mentioned and will be going back to do more reading. My Dad has been in the hospital for a while and just started dialysis on Friday in the hospital. The doctors are keeping him there until they can determine the amound of dialysis that he can take. I am trying to speak with a dialysis dietician to get some menus for him. This is such a trying thing for us, Mom is not getting any younger and this is so hard for her.

I only know that lots of protein is necessary because I provide fresh eggs to my next door neighbor, whose Dad is on dialysis.
