"Sweet" suggestions for kidney patient?

My new neighbor suffers from some kind of kidney problem. I know she is unable to work and is on disability because of her condition. I don't know her well at all, but I'd like to give her and her husband a plate of Christmas treats as I do my other neighbors. Is there anything I need to keep in mind when baking for a person with kidney problems?

I'd ask first. She might have other conditions that caused the kidney problems.

I agree, there could be other health issues, like diabetes, etc. I know my stepmother couldn't eat foods high in potassium while she was on dialysis. Now her kidneys are better but she can't eat green stuff because she's on Coumadin, so you should definitely check.

It's nice of you to make goodies, though, and I'm sure they'd love some.

Unless there is something wrong with the kidney itself, I can tell you that you needn't worry. Just drink plenty of water. I have been living with one kidney for over 30 years and it functions just fine (empirically proven by BUN/CREA levels in a recent blood test). The fact of the matter is that the body can funtion perfectly well with one third of one kidney, so you shouldn't worry that the lone kidney is "taxed". Just stay away from high-protein, low carb diets (Atkins) since they throw the system into ketosis, which is not good for the kidney. Just drink lots of water (and a healthy, balanced diet, preferably containing minimal processed foods).

If you look up Gonzalez on the PubMed scientific literature database, you find a grand total of two published papers, one dealing with the use of pancreatic enzyme extract in nude mice. The other, regarding his "pilot study", involved a grand total of 10 patients (too small a number to make any judgments, even if you disregard the fact that this wasn't a proper double-blind, placebo-controlled trial). After 8 years and at least $1.7 million in government funding, where's the evidence that his coffee enemas and zillions of supplements have done anything to improve survival for pancreatic cancer patients? I can understand patients with this disease, who have a dismal outlook, grasping at any possibility of help. But it's depressing that our tax dollars are funding enema advocates when there are valid alternative and mainstream medicine projects out there needing support. Note again that in critiquing "detoxification" regimens, I am referring to the fallacy that mysterious environmental "toxins" and normal bodily waste need to be purged from our internal organs with the aid of supplements and enemas, supposedly because those organs can't handle things otherwise. This is nonsensical. Speaking of "dirty" bodily functions, the fascination with enemas seems to stem from the idea that our colons contain (gasp!) waste. This is normal, but a lot of people have trouble believing it.

I can't help much with the meds but can tell you I owned a miniature poodle that always had elevated alkphos (in the 600's) for years and one vet finally told me that it was just normal for my dog. He was diagnosed with Cushings in his final 2 years but I was never convinced the tests were accurate since my dog never had 'true' cushings symptoms. The symptoms he did have, and died from, were more indicative of a brain tumor. I wish you the best with your little gal.

Thank you everyone for all your support. I am very happy to have spent the time asking the question. There are lots of titles listed that I completely overlooked and many that I will have to look into. My mom lives in the philippines and is old fashioned. She spent lots of time teaching and helping others as a social worker so maybe those 20th century country tales so I appreciate your suggestions Liz and Yoyobon. Thank you Ccrdmrbks. I am trying to relate to how my mom is feeling right now but I can't imagine it. We just celebrated my eldest sister's marriage last week so I think her emotions must be quite a mixture as well. Miss Read sounds promising. A friend highly reccomended Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe a long time back simply as a read to enjoy but I haven't gotten around to it. Anyone know if it would be appropriate for the situation? Comedy is an interesting idea. Though it may be hard to find something she relates to. I'll ask her and see if she has any favourites. Thanks--she doesn't really associate with anyone--I guess she's just not able--but maybe her husband could tell me what she could have.

I recently started making freezer meals for my parents. Dad has stage 3 kidney failure along with a host of other health issues, meaning he has to maintain a low potassium, low cholesterol, low sodium diet. Mom is "pre"-diabetic (if there is such a thing), and follows a strict diabetic diet.

It's especially tricky because they insist on eating the same meals, so everything has to fit all of the dietary criteria. I found the amazing website linked below (I have no affiliation). I can't say whether the desserts are good because I haven't gotten that far. They do enjoy the main dishes. I print out the nutrition info for each recipe and attach it to the containers so they can plan the day's meals more effectively. That might work for your neighbor.

I hope you find this helpful. Bless you for wanting to do this. Too often people become ignored for their issues when all it takes is a little effort by someone who cares.
