Question about moving/throwing out a central air/heat unit

This is a dumb question, but I need to gut the back of a house that I just bought and I've never done any gutting before. I'm planning on buying a new central air and heat unit and placing it in a different location in the house. Is there anything I need to be particularly careful about when demolishing the old unit? Can I just unplug it and throw it out? When I bought the house I was told that the unit was electric, but yesterday, I noticed a carbon monocide warning label on it--does that indicate that the unit is gas?

Also, can anyone tell me how much space a central a/c/heat unit requires? The house is small (900 square feet of living space). I was hoping to fit it into a 3 x 2 closet.
