Has anyone switched to Digital Phone service?

I just received my monthly AT&T bill and it jumped over $30 in one month for the same services I've had for years. I want to swtich and have been looking at the digital phone service that is available through Time Warner, who I have cable and high speed internet with. Does anyone have any experience with their digital phone service or any digital phone service?

You might want to look into the pros and cons. If they do not have a backup system you could be without phone service of the power goes out.

Brenda, about a year ago we got rid of our home phone. They put that number on my cell phone and left Dh's cell # the same it had always been. We don't miss any calls and we eliminated that phone bill. We can't see any disadvantage to using cell phones exclusively.

Don't forget to review local providers if you have any, and don't go by just the big name. Out here in my neck of rural America the Comcast TV cable that goes past my home, and ends just down the road, is service generations behind urban America. It has limited channel offerings, and no HD. Thus, Directv is my source and after 18 years is getting too expensive. ATT offers telephone only here, and they should hold a gun and wear a mask for what they charge; $83.70 a moth for unlimited nationwide long distance. I am going to be looking into their home wireless which will be $35.00 for the same service. I have local cellphone service, wish I didn't have to have one, and the 3G plan I use is bare bones with the cost less than half of the big boys at $35.00 a month. This includes 500 minutes and 3 unlimited nationwide long distance numbers which I have assigned to my children. My 4G wireless Internet connection comes from them too. A little pricey at $60.00 month for 20GB, but it roars and is reliable. As I have shared before I live in my area's Bermuda Triangle for electronic services so no bundles are available.I just cope with what is available. DA

lukki - It took us *months* to get AT&T to send someone who really looked at the problem, and then multiple visits to fix it. I've got a direct number to their St Louis tech support office, and the cell phone of the latest (and greatest!) local tech, so I can skip the overseas people unless I really need to put in a trouble ticket (then it has to go chain of command). I got tired of hearing them ask me to cycle the power on the modem and tell them which lights were blinking too! This AM the guy in St Louis asked if I worked for them b/c I seemed to know so much LOL! But I'm still waiting for tech to come and test my lines - it seems to have settled down a bit, was getting 2.2Mbps pretty reliably b4 I went to Verizon store, now I can still connect but speed has dropped to about 1.7M - still good, but makes me wonder if we'll have service at all by the time DH gets home. Oh, and I found I'm on a "secondary" ($9.99/mo) line on my mon's contract, my dad was "primary" (I thought he and I had the same plan) so that's why he got a free phone. I'd have to pay for mine (with rebates, but still not free). So I'll hold off and see if DH's company is going to stop paying for his Blackberry. He said it was possibility in next couple of months that they'd cancel and just tell people they'd remiburse them for their own plans (minutes?). If that happens I can drop out of my parents' plan for no penalty (found I'm month-to-month now, if I got a new phone I'd be locked in), then DH and I can get our own plan - if they take away the company device, we can get 2 Blackberry Curves for $50 after rebate. At least if they keep running the same promotion they have now. We'd have to get insurance though - DH is hard on them, esp. the holsters, but he did drop one device in the gutter and break it running across the street a couple years ago.

We had to replace an old Sears TL 4 months before moving -- actually, we had to help our buyers do that. They chose a Maytag FL, which allowed me to "test drive" a FL for 4 months. It was okay, but I wasn't totally sold on a FL. I'd decided to go with a F&P top loader in the house we're building. However, our well produces less water than optimum. When the other 3-4 houses in our development are built, we'll share the cost of bringing in city water, and that will be used to supplement the well, but till then, DH and I will get along with what we've got. So I checked the water usage of the F&P (thinking it was about midway between a FL and TL) and learned it uses 40 gallons per load!! We simply can't waste that much water, so we're back to a FL. I asked our appliance advisor what he'd choose if he had to replace his 18-year-old Bosch set, and he said either a Samsung or another Bosch, but because the Samsung had some distinct advantages, that's what it would be. Our water usage will be 8 gallons per load, which is hugely significant in our situation. Our situation is probably unusual, but I think there are many situations in which a FL just makes the most sense.

Way back in 1990, I traveled occasionally on business and got a Master Card (credit card) that was also an ATT calling card. I could pick up any land line phone, call an 800 number on the card, enter a 4 digit PIN to get me into ATT's phone service. Once in, I could call any number in the US for the cost of a local call. Since cells phones arrived, I have not used this card to make calls so do not know if it still works. In its day, it was convenient. One time, I had a Sprint cell phone, was at my sister's place and tried to use it to make a motel reservation. It found a cell tower but would not complete the call. I had to resort to my credit card calling service. (It turns out that Sprint stretched the truth in advertising a bit - claimed to have nationwide coverage - nope. Turns out it was nationwide only within 15 miles of the interstate system.) After that trip, we changed cell phone service. Today, I know nothing about Sprint's coverage.

Thanks Casey and Vannie. Casey, I did just read a review by someone who had switched to Time Warner Digital Phone service and she said the same thing - one time the service went out but it was very brief. Her overall review was favorable, and the review was given a year ago when digital phone service was new.

Vannie - I have thought about getting rid of my land line but didn't know they could put our home number on a cell phone. That would be great!

It just annoys the fire out of me that my phone bill jumped over $30 a month and I didn't add one service. And it annoys me that I have to pay over $4 a month for long distance that I never use.

I ditched AT&T about a year ago in favor of Charter phone. It's cheaper and I have unlimited long distance. The only difference I see is the amount of the bill.

Brenda, we would have made the switch a lot sooner if we had known they could transfer our old home # to a cell. We were surprised to learn that.

I switched to digital about a year ago, and have no complaints at all. Went with our local tv cable company, but just have the phone and computer on it. We are saving about $40 a month this way, and have unlimited long distance calling which we didn't have with our only choice for a phone only company in this area.

I for one see a lot of disadvantages to having only a cell phone. I do not own a cell phone, but several of the people I talk to regularly have only cell phones. I am quite frankly sick to death of splotchy conversations and dropped calls or straining to hear. Maybe it is the area they are in or whatever. Until service with a cell is as reliable as a land line, I don't want one. I do have On Star in my van, and I feel safe on the road should I encounter a real emergency. That and my home land line is enough.

ours is thru Comcast, our internet and cable provider...it's like 20.00 monthly and unlimited nationwide long distance...if the power go's out...and we really NEED a phone...then we use our cell phones. It's happened once in the last year...so no big deal...I missed the tv more then the phone!

We're in the process of getting, phone, computer and TV through the cable company..We already have the phone and TV and they are having a 3 for deal, so we'll give it a try...We were just about to look into getting the dish, but he showed me how we can save money and get much better unlimited phone service...I hate changes but to save money, I'll put up with it.....

As an update, I fired off an email to AT&T yesterday questioning why my bill went up over $30 a month and they responded today with "oops - it's a billing error - disregard." I just wonder how many people won't question it.

Another friend told me that Verizon fiber optics is coming to our area in June and I'd really like to switch my internet service to them, so maybe at that time I'll switch my phone too. At least since I know the bill REALLY isn't going up $30, I have a little time to look into all of my options.
