Thumbprint Scones

I used my regular scone recipe, but instead of mixing fruit into the dough, I made a little thumbprint in the centre and filled the indent with locally made Saskatoon preserves.

Drizzled with a vanilla glaze.

I grew up with a tradition of afternoon tea, which came from the Dutch and English side of the family. Mom and grandma had tea and I remember wonderful gatherings of many of my grandma's 8 sisters for afternoon tea. Mom said she had it at her grandma's too, so when I serve tea I like to include great grandma's little china platter for the sweets. But Dutch tea is just plain tea with a cookie, usually a gingerbread one! It took me a while to loose the "high tea" moniker for afternoon tea, I guess Americans think that an afternoon tea with all the china is a "high falutin' affair!" I love all the variations of tea service pieces! Although I can ill afford to ever have a formal tea since I am at work all the time in the afternoon and rarely have company on weekends. I am also greatly enamoured of canapes and finger sandwiches, I love the idea of being able to try a few bites of a lot of different tastes! Again, not something I get to indulge in very often. That's a meal we don't often have anymore at my house, the "make your own sandwich" spread that my mom used to put out. I know it is very common in Europe as a dinner, just some breads, cheeses and meats set out on the table with a few other accompaniments. At least that's the way it was back in the 80's when I was in Germany. They have great coffee houses too. We have them here in the states but no where near as many fine ones. My current town has a nice coffee house but it is not very exciting when it comes to the food offerings. The same dull limited options every single day. The market won't bear anything more I guess.

Dang, Carol, I KNEW I forgot something. It was the Silly String. Carp! Thanks, Donna, but I found some at the mediterranean store. A day too late, I'd already made the hummus, LOL, and vowed to not buy anything until I cleaned that packed-to-the-shelves pantry! As for leftovers, I have to admit that the hummus stayed at my house, along with the end of the bruschetta, the last of SharonCB's salmon pie and a bit of Linda's Wild Rice Soup. I hope you have a wonderful time baking tomorrow rhome! Double ovens.. swooonn.. lol. Boy am I a slacker compared to ya'll. For the New Orleans boxes I made regular chocolate chip, peanut butter with colored sugar [as per tradition] and fudge. The kids only like certain stuff and the fudge is Christys family tradition so she has to send her sister and mother some. I sent them a pecan pie too. I've also made meltaways, world peace, milk choc choc chip, shortbread, more fudge and caramels for Christys fellow employees. The caramels sure did turn out great this year. I forgot to put in the vanilla. lol. I think I like them better. You can really taste the butter. The execs got pecan pies. I have dough in the fridge for the rest of the milk choc chips and I took some of that dough and instead of chips I added bunch of old fashioned oats to it for me. I am weird in that I don't like cookies to sit around very long. I'd rather have them fresh, so I tend to make doughs and just bake off a pan or two at a time. So, as it gets closer to Christmas I'll be still making our ricotta cookies, some rugeleah, sand tarts, and for the Christmas dessert I'll make a pecan pie and chocolate pie. For Christy's stocking I'm making Ann's crisp truffles and some chocolate covered raisins. So, let me make a list.. hmm.. Standard chocolate chip Peanut butter World Peace Meltaways Rugeleah Milk chocolate chocolate chip Oatmeal Shortbread Sand tarts Ricotta cookies Sugar Cookie cutouts [maybe, I like to make the shortbread into cutouts, so that might do for this year] Fudge Caramels Crisp truffles Chocolate covered raisins [she doesn't like nuts] Pecan Pie Chocolate Pie Yup, I'm a slacker ;(

Lemon curd and gingerbread scones

Ann T - Thanks. I was thinking the same thing or thumbprint cookies. Carol - Here is the recipe I used from Sensational Preserves by Hilaire Walden. It is listed under Lime Curd with the variation being the Lemon Curd. Lemon Curd Finely grated zest and juice of 4 medium plump lemons (Meyer is the best I think. I chopped the lemon peel in my mini electric chopper.) 1/2 cup diced unsalted butter 1 1/2 cups of superfine sugar (I made regular sugar superfine by running it through my mini chopper.) 4 large eggs, lightly beaten Put the zest, juice, butter and sugar in heatproof bowl or double boiler and place over saucepan of gently simmering water, do not allow bottom of the bowl to sit in the water. Heat the mixture gently stirring constantly, until all the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Strain the eggs into the bowl and continue to stir over gently simmering water until the curd thickens enough to coat the back of the spoon. This should take about 30-40 minutes. Stir occasionally at first, more frequently as the cooking progresses, then constantly toward the end of the cooking time so that the curd cooks evenly and does not curdle. Do not allow the water to boil. Pour the curd into warm clean dry jars. Cover, seal and process. Store in a cool dark, dry place or refrigerator. Refrigerate after opening. I put in unsealed jelly jars and plan on keeping the jars in the refrigerator the whole time. I read somewhere that they will keep for 2 to 3 weeks. Clare

Ann, those are lovely. I noticed the pretty scalloped edges on the bottom. Did you bake them in a mold or use a scalloped cutter? I can't eat scones anymore because they stick in my throat and Don prefers sweets heavy with nuts/seeds/dried fruit, etc. but I still make scones for the fireman down the street. Gives me an outlet for the baking I love to do.

Thanks Tricia, yes, I used a scalloped cutter. My set of biscuit cutters have a scalloped edge and a regular edge.

Ruthanna, I added the preserves before baking. Just made an indent with my thumb and filled with a little of the jam.

I finally made some scones not long ago. I had never been tempted because every scone I ever had was closer to sawdust than anything else. I finally made my own. What a difference! Mine weren't nearly so pretty and there isn't a Saskatoon to be had anywhere close to me. ;)

Oh my. I knew better than to open an Ann T baking thread.

Those look delicious, I'd love one for breakfast. Not a Saskatoon in sight here either, but I have homemade blueberry jam that would work in a pinch, I think.

Very cute! I went on a bite-sized craze a couple of years ago. I don't have a scalloped cutter; now I see I need to get one!

...I don't know what a Saskatoon is, nor have I ever heard of it.

I just happened to use Saskatoon Berry preserves, but any of your favourite jams will work.

A Saskatoon Berry is similar to a blueberry both in looks and flavour.

Deb, these were a little bigger than one bite size. About the size of a 2 1/2 inch biscuit.
