French Grey Sea Salt

Bought some.

Now what?

Yes, I bought 'cuz it was $1.00 and came in a cute tin.

But now I have no idea what the best use for it would be.

Any suggestions?

Any cooking - veg, meat etc. It's the white "fleur de sel that you don't cook with, it's purely used as a condiment. Much more expensive too.

I love that McCormicks which is now discontinued! Buy all you can!
I have been putting it on everything: cookies, tomatoes, roasted asparagus, bread and butter...

When white people think about regular salt, all they can think about sodium and poor health. When they think about Sea Salt they think about France. So it's no surprise that it has become so popular. But Sea Salt is like Trader Joes, Banksy, or The Shins-entry level to their respective field. Therefore, it is important that you learn about other more expensive salts so that you can complain about not having them. To a white person, this shows that you know and love expensive things but feel sad that you can't yet afford them. Yep that is all we use. We have done this since time together began for a good reason . DH can't see...he can feel pinches of salt and fresh ground pepper easily to judge the amounts but not able to do so from shaking/grinding. I suppose one could pour it into ones hand from a container but it is so much easier to have small dishes of the two in the counter by the cooktop . We also have them for the table...same reason....DH's vision. But I really like it too and like the look. No guests have ever complained so I guess they are OK with it. At holiday time when I set a fancy table I have cut glass salt cellars that were my grandmother's. I place one at each setting. I don't have silver spoons for them but this way the guests have a personal pinch pot :) c

I buy salt less than once a year - I almost never use it as such. I have a box of Kosher salt that is at least two years old, and I have a one pound container of Mediterranean sea salt that I replace every 16 months or so. Instead of salt, I use soy sauce, fish sauce, ponzu sauce, or soup bases, depending on the flavor I want. I pretty much only use salt with savory carbohydrate foods such as rice, grits, or breads. I tend to omit salt in almost all desserts and also in many vegetable dishes. I very much dislike the taste of salt in desserts and I find it offensive in many vegetable dishes. I prefer potatoes and corn without salt, as well as various types of squash. I find that salt interferes with my ability to taste the vegetables. Whereas some chefs say that salt enhances flavor, I find that it often disguises or masks flavor. I put salt on meat or fish not because I like the flavor but to help make it moist. I think salt is very much an acquired taste, and it is one that you can un-acquire by simply reducing or eliminating it. I think many people add salt to dishes without thinking, as if salt is required in all recipes. I use it in as few as possible. If someone wants to add salt later, they can, but I like to have the ability to taste food without salt. Lars

Grainlady's suggestion is a good one. You can explore the cookbooks without paying out any money and you may just discover that you really don't think they're worth investing in at all. I've been dealing with low sodium cooking for about three years now. I started a blog about it last year. If you go to my blog you'll find a section listing low sodium information websites. I'd definitely recommend Low Sodium Cooking.com and MegaHeart.com. http://www.lowsodiumcooking.com/ http://www.megaheart.com/ Both the websites also contain recipes, helpful information, and a free newsletter that you can sign up for. Also, both website authors have published low sodium cookbooks. You could make a point of looking for their books. Or just refer to their recipe sections. Grainlady hit on an important concept. Yes, it is the McCormicks and I may have to go back by the liquidation store where I bought it to see if they have any more.
I figured salt was pretty safe at a place like that!

I used some last night on "baked" potatoes..

I washed russets, set them on squares of foil, gave them a drizzle of EVOO and a sprinkle of the Grey Sea (mine is really big grains), wrapped them and put them on the top rack of the grill, and "baked" at 400F for about an hour.
They were SOOoooooooooooooooo delicious and perfectly flavored.

I actually prefer it to fleur de sel & keep a cellar of it on the table; DH affectionately calls it 'road salt'.

antiquesilver, how is fleur de sel different from french gray other than color? They are both hand harvested moist finishing salts.
or are you talking about just regular dry sea salt?
This is not a criticism, I am trying to understand salt lingo better.

bumblebeez, it's my understanding (may be wrong since I'm not a salt afectionado) that fleur de sel is the best quality pick of the French Grey, thus the higher price tag & more perfect white color.

Mine is definitely 'grey', moist and large flakes.
The baked potatoes sound good Terri!
I sprinkled some on my salad a couple of nights ago, but had way too many other flavors going on to really taste it.
I think something simple like potatoes would be a better way to taste the salt.

Sel gris is salt that is harvested from the sea water in salt water pans - the depth of the colour depends on the quantity of minerals in the water - the time of year, the depth of the water etc.
Fleur de sel is much purer. It is harvested from the surface of the water where the salt crystals form naturally.
So, the best flavour comes from the Fleur de Sel.
The grey salt is very cheap and you pay a top price for the white. The best quality comes from near here in GuÃ©rande.
