Who sold my name and address to the " send a catalog " people?

LOL, I just got off the phone, calling catalog companies and asking to be taken off their mailing lists.

For some odd reason, between Christmas and New Years catalogs started coming in here. With "my name and address" on them.

At least, it isn't as bad as it was when I moved in to my last house, and I got between 3 and 11 catalogs a day, from/for the previous owner. :)

Now, quit it!

I'm with you Moni, I've finally whittled down the number of catalogs to just gardening ones. But oh my, the spurts of junk mail that get stuck in my e-mail spam. That seems to come in waves. Sometimes 1 or 2 a day, and sometimes as many as 30-delete, delete.

Did you know you can register with the Direct Marketing Association and stop a lot of junk mail?

The nice thing about this free service is that you can choose which catologues you still want to receive. It does take a few weeks for the mail to stop.

Ladies, if you save your email addys via an export feature in your mail program, you should also be able to import it again, in to another email program. I have done this, when I went from earthlink to gmail. in gmail is the export opting like this: Export Contacts Export your contacts so you can transfer them to other accounts or save them offline. Who do you want to export? All of my contacts - 755 Only contacts in What format would you like to export to? Google's CSV format (for importing into another Google account). Outlook's CSV format (for importing into Outlook or other applications). vCard format (for importing into Address Book or other applications). I have a folder in mozilla (as that is my browser) where I export all my addresses about once a month. I always overwrite the file that's already there, thus I have the latest and up to datetest (LOL) file for emergencies. In the import option on gmail I have this: Import Contacts We support importing contacts in the CSV file format (Comma Separated Values). For best results, please use a CSV file produced by Outlook, Outlook Express, Yahoo!, or Hotmail. For Apple Address Book, there is a useful utility called "A to G". Please select a file to upload Import Above all, know where you save your address book!!! otherwise, you can't import it in to a new mail program. Another tip: Use a "free mail program", like hotmail, gmail, yahoo etc. With this your mail is web based, and you can pull it up on ANY computer, and you don't have to change addresses when you get a new server. That's my reason to have gmail (main addy) yahoo mail for gardenweb and KT, yahoo mail for cycling... LOL, see where I am going? I have several email addresses, and I use them for different purposes. Hi there, I just wanted to respond to this post since I emailed someone that didn't necessarily have their email address on gardenweb. Sometimes when I search for certain things, like "white cabinets," a ton of posts with pictures of kitchens that do not necessarily appear in finished kitchens blog show up. Many times these are pictures off of photobucket. In one particular instance, I went back to find those photobucket pictures to show my husband, and I simply searched in google "GW's screen name kitchen" His or her email came up on google, and I emailed them asking if they minded sharing where they got their cabinets since they are local to Chicago, where I live. I would not be offended if someone emailed me asking me that, and so I didn't think anyone else would be offended either. Anyway, I just wanted to share how it is I came upon getting someone's email...actually quite unintendedly. hth, Pebbles81

In California the seller must file a transfer of sale with the DMV immediately after selling a vehicle. This protects the seller from all accidents/tickets/etc. that the buyer may have in the future. It's too bad your State doesn't require that as well. But as Liz says the written bill of sale should help you to prove when you sold it and to whom. You can vent anytime you want!! ~Susan

The difference between these tiles and the Gucci purse from TJ Maxx is that you only buy one purse and it's not that noticeable if there are a few things "off" about it, because it's just hanging from your arm/shoulder and moving and not the focus of the outfit. The tile, if they are seconds, means that they are ALL a little off, and when you lay them all down next to each other, the small differences will all become magnified and more noticeable. And they will all be off in different ways. Tile is one of those things that, unless it is a really rustic, handmade style, is MEANT to be uniform, and you are guaranteeing that what you get will not be uniform. Additionally, the only tile installers that will install it will be either the extreme pro, who will charge extra for the labor needed to make it look ok (note, it will not look great, just ok) or the tile setter with very little experience or very low standards who doesn't understand the challenges these tiles represent. He will say "sure, I can lay those tiles, it will look fine" and then when you complain about the installation he will tell you that the tiles are the problem and you should have expected the result. Go read some threads about bad tile installations (most of them are bathrooms or backsplashes, but the concept is the same) and you will realize that you don't want to go down the road of having cheap tiles and an less-than-expert tile installer.

That is so strange, b/c we get very few. I get some addresses to my ex-DIL but at my address. So, I don't know who sold your name and addy, b/c they haven't sold mine!! We get a lot of magazines and the Wall St. Journal every day, so you'd think those sources might have sold it, but nope!! Kinda hurts my feelings (LOL)

I know selling names/addresses is a big lucrative business. I strongly suspect the libraries must sell some of them, because after DH & I started checking large-print books out at the library, we started getting junk mail from large-print publishers. As for other catalogs, I used to get so many unasked for ones, and I called their 800 number and asked to have my name taken off their mailing list, and it takes a little time and sometimes you get one or two more, but they did stop. I finally found out who was selling my name. When I ordered something I would put an extra letter in my name. Usually a different letter for my milddle name. It was not long and I was getting tons of catalogs in this address. I called them and asked them NOT to sell my name again. It is a way of making big bucks by selling your name to other companies.

When my son was in his last year of school his friends thought it was funny to "sign" him up for all sorts of catalogs etc. It took us a while to figure it out. I swear to this day we are still on some lists LOL!!

I love the catalogs...we get a lot of them. It gives us reading material when we sit out back with no kids! Really though my DH loves to thumb through them all..then we give them to either my cousin or his sister. They love them too! I rarely order from them and hate to see the postage and materials they waste sending them all out all the time.

Personally, I like getting catalogs. If it weren't for catalogs, I might not get any mail. I hate when I get duplicates, what a waste! Does LLBean really think I need more sweaters?

I used to get a ton of them. We were gone unexpectedly and didn't get our mail. The mailman, instead of putting it in the big box for packages, sent it all back to the post office. I was so embarrassed. For 3 days of mail, I had 2 pieces of real mail and the rest was catalogs...weighing about 15 pounds. I order online a lot so got all these catalogs. I came home and went to each website and canceled them all. I wish I had known about Maddie's site then.
