Moving my address book...

I just upgraded from dial-up to DSL. I have a new isp and need to take my address book from my earthlink account and move it to my new Centurytel account. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

A strange side note - I checked my new email and was surprised to find it full of all sorts of email regarding a trucking company with my last name. I deleted a bunch of stuff before I realized that I had someone else's email address. All fixed now! How wierd is that?

Lydia, if you found the export when you backed up your address book, you should be able to find import this time too. :)

Click on import, and then go to where you exported your address book to, and :)
import it. :)

Next week I'm changing providers. I exported my address book and favorites to my desk top. Do you think that will save them?

I assume you will be using firefox mozilla browser? what you do it click on the bookmarks button at the top then click on organize bookmarks, that will open a new box, on that click file at the top then chose import, from file, browse to where you have the bookmarks.html file stored at (either on your pc or the floppy drive) and select that file for import. I would move the file from the floppy to your desktop to make it easier to locate.

Thanks jemdandy. I would hate to have to print the amount of phone numbers I keep every time I added a new one! (I must keep a rather large personal phone book, compared to most people. In addition to family and friends, I keep the names of every contractor and business I frequent!) That's actually a good idea if I was willing to start completely over. I would have if I hadn't been able to find the software that was so similar to what I'm already used to. Sadly, I am a creature of habit, and I liked how the address book linked with the personal calendar. At this point, since I liked how it worked, I'd rather buy software than figure it out from scratch!

I think if you save it as an Excel doc. to your desktop or wherever, you can then import it to Gmail. Look at your Gmail contacts section--it should tell you how to import and export. "We support importing contacts in the CSV file format (Comma Separated Values). For best results, please use a CSV file produced by Outlook, Outlook Express, Yahoo!, or Hotmail. For Apple Address Book, there is a useful utility called "A to G". "

roxiel, sadly, I didn't lose the information because of not backing it up. I lost it because Hallmark's software was faulty. I spent HOURS on the phone with their technical support to find out what happened, and they were never able to help me. I really liked the program for the short time I was able to use it, but after being forced to make the change, I am now appreciating the instant visibility color coding and using italics brings to the information. Also, I can add as much content as I need to since I'm not limited in any way. Since I decided to call individually each business listed, I was also able to see if the listing was entered correctly and make the necessary changes due to numerical mistakes. I don't know about most of you, but typing numbers is a challenge unto itself! My Word program tells me the last time I updated the information, and I always make changes as soon as I see the need. By using my own format, I can list any personal or pertinent information, such as account numbers for Auto Service, web links, or even the names of my friends kids or pets. I didn't like the Google Calendar in the beginning, I suppose because I was grieving the loss of my software. I've learned to appreciate it, although it was difficult to get over myself! I've had to learn the best way to enter the information to make it work ''at a glance'', but now that I've managed the learning curve, it's easier than I first thought. I'm curious as to whether anyone else ever needs to look back at the information on their calendar? My Address Book has my entire life in it. I'm so grateful it's finally in good working order...

Hi Moni!

I found where I had exported it to, but can't figure out how to get it where I want. The new email page is totally different and I can't see anywhere that I am able to export or import.

I may end up putting the addys in one at a time.

Donna, maybe Moni will pop back in and let you know. I saved my address book in documents. I would think desktop would work, but I don't know. Keep your old isp for a while until you get your new provider working well. I am still using my old email address from Earthlink - I haven't even called them yet to let them know I'll be cancelling services.

Ladies, if you save your email addys via an export feature in your mail program, you should also be able to import it again, in to another email program.

I have done this, when I went from earthlink to gmail.

in gmail is the export opting like this:

Export Contacts
Export your contacts so you can transfer them to other accounts or save them offline.
Who do you want to export?
All of my contacts - 755
Only contacts in
What format would you like to export to?
Google's CSV format (for importing into another Google account).
Outlook's CSV format (for importing into Outlook or other applications).
vCard format (for importing into Address Book or other applications).

I have a folder in mozilla (as that is my browser) where I export all my addresses about once a month. I always overwrite the file that's already there, thus I have the latest and up to datetest (LOL) file for emergencies.

In the import option on gmail I have this:

Import Contacts
We support importing contacts in the CSV file format (Comma Separated Values). For best results, please use a CSV file produced by Outlook, Outlook Express, Yahoo!, or Hotmail. For Apple Address Book, there is a useful utility called "A to G".

Above all, know where you save your address book!!! otherwise, you can't import it in to a new mail program.

Another tip: Use a "free mail program", like hotmail, gmail, yahoo etc. With this your mail is web based, and you can pull it up on ANY computer, and you don't have to change addresses when you get a new server.

That's my reason to have gmail (main addy) yahoo mail for gardenweb and KT, yahoo mail for cycling... LOL, see where I am going? I have several email addresses, and I use them for different purposes.

All are web based and free.
