I'm in Kansas City, MO. The new bedroom does not currently have duct work. This bid included adding two ducts as the bedroom also has a small bath. (Though not sure about a return?) The current system is a 5 ton, but it was put in misguided efforts to increase the airflow upstairs to the space over the garage. I do believe that more insulation and the duct work would allow us to get more life out of our current unit, but my desire to have more control over the temperature upstairs vs downstairs as well as the size of our monthly bills lead to discussions of replacing it. (or mini splits) Most houses in our area have either a system for each floor or one with some kind of zoning. My electric bills in the summer are usually about twice that of my neighbors. We are all electric, so winters are equally bad. I agree about the basement. It's normally pretty cool and I'd likely put in radiant for heat.

The biggest problem with HVAC zone systems is knowing when to choose it as a solution and when not to. Some HVAC companies it's about "sell, sell, sell" whether or not it works... there's more money in "sell, sell, sell" --- when it's only about money? So does the comment above mean I do it for free? No. If you think that you are reading things that aren't there. New construction? best to choose separate systems 9 times out of 10. In order for a zone system to work, you have to know what you are doing. Most HVAC companies staff (the techs they send you) are 20-30 year olds. How much practical experience could they possible have? It's best for HVAC zone systems to be an elegant solution. A HVAC zone system is a tool in the tool bag. Not all homes are suitable for zone systems. Some homes there is no other way, and in some cases complications to those problems will make an HVAC zone system design possibly more prone to problems. You have a problem now, do you want more problems. These decisions among others are decided "in person" --- so considering that becareful what information you decide upon from the internet. Just because it's here doesn't necessarily mean it's true. That said: Depending on equipment level chosen, how many different floors you have in your structure, how much room you have available... will all be factors that make you decide one way or another. When someone is without heat, air conditioning or hot water, it's often the first replacement contractor to arrive that "wins." Not hot water... I am not a plumber. "Both systems(two zones) have been running well and making the house cool since the installation" You can't go by the colors of the wires - you have to trace them from the thermostat to the furnace to the condenser. The fact that both systems are working fine (7 degree drop is an hour ain't bad but you need to measure the delta for a more accurate assessment) suggests everything is OK. DON'T go changing any wires around unless you do the above. Better yet, call the guy and ask him what you asked us and ask him to take a look at it.
