Bryant Evolution system, $28k

We were quoted $28K to in install 1 - 3 ton evolution upstairs with evolution 95% furnace 90i(1500 sq ft) and 1 - 4 ton evolution system downstairs with evolution 95% furnace 90i (2200 sq ft). Has tin plate evaporator coils. Both systems are the top of the line and will have the evolution thermostat. This quote also including all the fiber ducts and flex runs. What am I actually paying for this actual systems? Is this reasonable for this type of system?

The contractor is telling me that there is no benefit from the evolution thermastat so I called Bryant and you are right. This particular a/c can't be paired with the evolution thermostat without a nim module (whatever that is...cost another $300 though). They are recommending a single stage Model 126 preferred a/c for my colonial and said it would work with the evolution thermostat. I have no idea how much difference this will be in price. Monitor yes... What time of day are your readings? Where is ductwork located? Age of ductwork system? What type filter are you using? MERV rating? CFM/ton setting? At what outdoor temp and indoor thermostat setting? RH reading in house? As you can see there are are many factors. Some people would love to have your problem. Post back with answers to questions. Not sure what you mean by 'new line set'. Are you talking about the ducting? I was quoted an additional $225 for installing a second vent in the media room as there is currently only one......fine for the 2nd bedroom, which this room was before I moved in, but its insufficient with a big projector acting as a space heater. I looked at the Preferred and Legacy products and was quoted $500 less for that system. I believe it was 114ANA AC unit and a fixed speed legacy line furnace. For me the $500 premium was a no brainer. Does anyone know how the zoning works. I believe a separate slave controller is needed in each zone. Are they hardwired to the master controller or is the system wireless?

The house is 1800 sq ft, 2 story. The reason we did not go with the 95% eff is the pipes would have to be run thru the garage and would require additional insulation as the house is built on a slab foundation. We had 5 different comapnies out to give estimates and all of them talked us out of the 95% eff sysytem.

Well I have the exact same size carrier infinity which I believe is the sane unit. New constriction. I had hps and ng. Humidifier. Zoned upstairs. Had quote for 20k for flex and 28k for hard duct

Well, I got no offer of a car or vacation!! It appears they may have overlooked that line item and I will make sure they add it in. :-)

David, if you don't mind, where do you live in the US? We are in Alabama!

Despite the sarcasm here, I don't think the quote is that bad but I guess it depends if it is new construction. A 95% furnace is of course over the top for Alabama. We have a 90% furnace and that was only because it is in the basement (and the exhaust for a 80% made them equal cost). Our NG bill for this year was about $200 total - and it was a really cold winter for all....Try to make 2 95% furnaces pay off in Alabama - I can't imagine.

There are 2 levels of Infinity/Evolution - Seer 16 and Seer 19. Which one are you at?

Again - trying to make these things make sense from a payback period is nuts to say the least. I'll assume that you don't have/want heat pump and your HDDs are 1/2 of ours. So you might have a $400 NG bill for the year. So those 95% are saving roughly $60 a year over the cheapy 80% furnaces. I expect you are paying around $3000 in increased costs since you have 2. That is a 50 year payback (neglecting time value of money and inflation). Since very few furnaces would last 50 years, they never pay off.

Chew on that.

Your best bet is straight heat pump. You would likely save $5000 up front and save $100 a year since I bet your electricity is less than or equal to $.10 a kilowatt. Unless you are planning for the next ice age or live in a really cold section of Alabama (is there one?).

Why not heat pump? You have to answer that question to get a rational response here. Also plug in your zip and get HDDs. Also, is this new construction and if not, what is your envelope like? Do you have any insulation? If old construction, what did you have before? What were your costs?

I'll second David's question... Is this new construction? I should have read a bit more into the situation before I made my sarcastic comment. The price seemed high at first, but new construction is a much bigger job than a swap-out of existing equipment. Regardless, having another quote in your hands from another dealer is never a bad idea to get a good comparison and to get all your options straight.

This is new construction and it is for flex, the main trunk will be metal, per code of our city. If David got the Carrier for 20k I am trying to figure out why I am at 28k for Bryant the sister brand and no humdifier and certainly no zoning!!! You know what is quite comical in all of this, everything we thought was going to be a reasonable purchase has turned out high as a kite and everything we thought was going to be through the roof has turned out less expensive than we budgeted for! Who knew???
