Mulch?

To put in a pond for fish!!! My son-in-law always does this with his trees. It is to make a great gathering place for the fishes.

maybe a kid building a Christmas tree fort? like in the old days, when I was a kid.

To cut the branches off and use as winter protection for plants. This is very common where I live. Trees get put out and "stolen". Of course it's not a crime-you voluntarily put it out at the curb. For me, that's "almost" public property. I would grab a used Chrisdtmas tree but I would certainly not grab your dog or child.

The birds love cut trees and branches over the winter! They can hide out in it, nibble on any seeds. People here ask for trees to put in their yard for the wildlife to over-winter.

Fire wood? Or maybe a fir tree wouldn't be good for that.

People gather trees here, then pile them up for shelter for game birds. It's a refuge for when the snow gets very deep.

Perhaps, like us, they have horses? We put couple trees out and the horses nudge them around, pick on bark when they're bored until spring...but ours have the branches on them until they're just chewed down to nothing :-)

My husband is a woodworker and he would take most any kind of wood except pine. He makes bowls, candlesticks, yo-yo's, pen and pencil sets, salt and pepper mills, wood toys for children, and these are just a few things he makes off the top of my head. He makes alot more things. He allows the wood to dry for appox. 6 months, then he works it up into anything that he desires. (or has an order for) He just went to a man's house this past weekend and helped him chop down a walnut tree..was tickled pink as it was huge and will make some really nice bookcases. So I am thinking it was a woodworker who got your discarded tree. I know if my husband saw it, and it was a good wood, he would have taken it off your hands faster than a chicken on a junebug.

If you put your tree at the curb, it's not on "almost" public property - it IS on public property. I learned that the hard way when the utility company and the state highway department had other ideas.

Like Jasdip, we put our tree out in the yard under the bird feeders so the little birds have a windbreak and safe place to eat.

we used to gather them up and have a HUGE bonfire for New Years. those babies go up FAST

It was a beautiful tree, full and densely branched however by the time I chopped off the bottom branches it did look rather bizarre. Using it for mulch was the only idea I had thought of - but then I wondered why they left behind all the big branches. That's interesting about giving it to the horses for amusement and as a social gathering hang out for the fish.

I'm glad someone had a use for it.

Hmm we must have a secret admirer too Last year our tree went missing on a Sunday night. There were good reasons above. but we don't get the cold or snow here. Not many horses in Orlando. but there are some. I figured probably mulch=thats what the landfill does with the trees. Someone else beat them to it!

well since we did not have the time this year with Mom in the hospital and all we have threatened to pick up a nice one on the side of the road and put it up in the atrium!!
but I promise it was not ME. LOL

I always took the neighbors trees, when I had a yard. I would cut the branches off, and lay them on my flower beds. The trunk was saved for fall, when I would use it for fire wood.

For use as firewood in an outside fire pit. Its got too much pitch to use in a fireplace or heating stove.

If the taker has a shredder, he can mulch it and use for edgings, weed control around the bases of trees, and blue-berry beds. (Evergreen foilage is acidic, just the ticket for blue berries.)

we pick up 4 or 5 each year to put at the end of our yard for wildlife refuge. the birds love it and so do the rabbits. we even had a baby deer born down behind it this past spring. ;)

Orthodox Christmas is this weekend... maybe someone needed a tree.

firewood or woodworking is my guess BUT hopefully nothing for their landscape as that just invites new pests to your yard. i believe thou that dept of ag and arborists are working on laws about the movement of trees, tree parts and leftover wood products because of the noxious spread of invasive pests wiping out tree populations. ~ liz

My landlord cut an evergreeen 20 feet high last summer and dragged it down with the tractor to dump into the pond, as habitat for fish. He has some that are getting quite large, there, now ...

... and the local lads like to go fishing.
