Easter...need sides suggestions

Ok so for the first time ever!!! hubby convinced me to order a Honey baked Ham...I conceded and its ordered! So my SIL is bringing a Turkey for those who do not eat ham. Being a cook...as you all can understand now I feel like sides are soooo simple I feel like Im not doing anything! I thought maybe since I have time Id make Parker House Rolls Barefoots Creamed Spinache Ceasar salad and of course as I do very year LindaC carrot cake...but now im blank! All suggestions and recipes welcomed I have right now 22 for dinner... Thanks

I definitely would add a potato dish -- you can do a casserole of some sort (for some reason au gratin potatoes and ham seem to go together) or make ahead mashed potatoes "loaded" -- 5 pounds of potatoes, cooked and then mashed (I now use the little red ones and don't peel), 1 stick butter, 8 ounces cream cheese, 8 ounces sour cream and then for the loaded part: bacon or bacon bits, cheddar cheese, green onion. Cook and mash the potatoes -- add the butter, cream cheese and sour cream and mix well. Add the other additions and mix well again and pour into a greased casserole dish and refrigerate. Bake at 350 for about a half hour or even more until piping hot.

We always do deviled eggs for Easter -- we boil to color so just boil some extras.

Also what about the copper pennies salad with carrots and dressing from tomato soup. That would be nice and colorful.

We love baked beans with our ham, scalloped potatoes or sweet potatoes. I still have to decide what I want for a veggie dish...oven roasted veggies, rutabaga, cauliflower casserole...hmmm.

zone is min winter temps on the worst day of winter.. z5 is about half the US ... and its useless to us ... big city name .... in every post please ... how hot does all that black top get in august .. that is going to be your base problem ... and will probably lead to watering issues .. keep in mind .. the most important thing in a pot is the media.. not the plants. .. with a good proper media.. which can hold the moisture needed.. you might be able to overcome the heat of the driveway ... the other side of that coin is that the cool nights are the usual recovery period for plant stress .. and that pavement can hold the heat long into the night.. reducing the or eliminating the recovery period ... that about lantana ... they might be able to take the heat ...literally and figuratively .... but they are most likely annual in z5 ... this would not be a good place for any kind of conifer ... stick to annuals .. as winter pot storage can also be a problem ... ken

Suggestions for home with only side entrance

How much time and money are you willing to put into this effort? Some budget friendly ideas: Instead of planting along the front of the house, make it interesting as you walk toward the side entrance. Line the strip along the front of the house between the sidewalk and the house with river rock and put something interesting in the space between the windows Don't junk it up with little stuff, use a large piece of outdoor art or large planters, one or an appealing arrangement of planters. Imagine this combination of river rock and planter(s). You don't have to sell the planters with the house. A very rough rendering below. You don't have to do plants, interesting yard art is nice too but that might get expensive and maybe not appeal to all tastes if it's a little funky. You'll place the river rock far enough to the left and right to look intentional and lead to the deck stairs. You could repeat the planter at the base of the stairs to tie it all together. You could plant some tallish native grasses like Indian Grass or Red Switch grass surrounded by something that trails over the edge of the planter. All drought tolerant so you drive yourself crazy watering. BTW, in my county in NC it is a fire hazard to put pinestraw closer than 10 ft. to the house. Maybe no restrictions in your area but if so, this would solve that issue. Next I would landscape in front of the beautiful deck. And hang a price tag on that deck, it's a real investment by you! This house has stone with plantings but I would do the stone and add some interesting metal folk art hopefully from a local artist. Lots of river rock ideas below

I love corn pudding with the Easter ham dinner. I can post a recipe tonight. Fresh green beans sauteed with colorful strips of bell peppers or fresh asparagus would be my choice for a green vegetable.

Side dishes of pickled beets, deviled eggs, and mustard pickle (or picallili) would be good additions, IMO. And the baked pineapple and cheese casserole would be a treat with ham!

A simple, flavorful corn dish from my dear MIL, a great cook:

Corn Pudding
4-6 servings, 1 qt. casserole

2 cups fresh corn, cut off the cob (I have used frozen when fresh was not in season)
1 cup whole milk
2 TB butter
salt and white pepper to taste
2 TB flour
3 eggs, beaten

Mix all ingredients together and pour into a greased 1-qt. casserole. Place dish in a pan of hot water. Bake in a 350F oven for 30-35 minutes, or until knife blade stuck into the center of the casserole comes out clean.

A new family favorite that I recreated after tasting it at a potluck. Goes nicely with ham.

Steam equal amounts of broccoli, cauliflower & sliced carrots until just slightly tender.

Combine with some cooked pasta--corkscrew is nice--in an oblong Pyrex casserole dish.

Mix in fresh crushed or minced garlic, black pepper, freshly grated Romano cheese & slosh w/ a liberal amount of olive oil. I also season liberally with the 'No Salt Seasoning' that I get at Big Lots. Roast until heated thru and veggies are softened to suit.

The Big Lots 'No Salt Seasoning' (Fresh Finds brand) contains: Dehydrated vegetables (Garlic, Onion, Parsley), Wheat Semolina, Sugar, Spices, Herbs, Citric Acid, Canola Oil, BHA, BHT. We love the stuff and it's super inexpensive.
