What home canned foods have you used lately?
Comments (40)Just catching up on this post - and noted I failed to answer bonicarose question about the granola bars. Yes - I use dried fruit - any that I happen to have available. One thing I noted - the bars are best made with dried granola (which I have for breakfast anyway), rather than the original recipes for using the oats as it comes from the box. The oat recipe turns the bars quite hard - whereas, if dried oats (as in granola) keeps the bars from baking too hard. Also don't pack the mixture in the pan too hard before baking. (Ye gads, learn something new everyday). My pantry is quite bare, with filled jars being replaced by many, many empty ones - mostly all my summer fruits in simple syrup - nectarine, apple, peach, pear, plum - now almost all gone (sob!). The freezer, tho - now that is different - it is so loaded that I can hardly squeeze any more in it. No snow - yet - (rain forcasted) - eating stir fries and lots of green salads. Planted quite a few onions and garlics that are coming along well. Never enough - and so must supplement cooking onions before the season is over. My chardonnay grapes arrived today (ordered in Dec) and now today's project is to get em in - hopefully will grow on a south-facing arbor - should be an ideal spot. Three other grapes - Thompson is one, the others shall remain nameless -are doing quite well - about 3 years old, and my first lesson on how to prune them (hope I didn't kill the poor things). Must can more fruit next year (then hide it!) Bejay...See MoreWhats made you smile lately?
Comments (13)Yesterday I was having a giant size PityParty! Didn't feel good at all; the bad cold rainy weather makes the old body hurt really bad. Had appoint with the eye doctor. I don't like to drive in the rain, but I went on anyhow. Yes, of course, they dilated my eyes! Had to wait another 20 minutes. Still drove home with headlights glaring! As I was eating my so-called dinner I was thinking about being old (and crotchety) and how old friends are dwindling away through death and inabilities, etc. Real bummer! Couple hours later I got a call from and old friend who asked if I would be home today. She and two other old friends are coming for an afternoon visit. That sure made me smile!! Comments (9)Yes...did yesterday and asked if $150.00 is common among the dealers, perhaps prices can change slightly. Please ask first. If I would have known this first, perhaps the decision would have been different, [go cheaper]. At least this Trane has life time warranty on the heat exchangers, primary & secondary, made from stainless steel. After taking my old one out I could see down about 3/4 from the top on the heat exchanger looking for holes, none was visible and the installer crew was surprised to see this. But I know it had a small hole on one side when looking from the bottom up. I'm even more surprised now how well this Tempomatic heater was made, [Ontario]. Sadly, no heater is made in Canada anymore. [USA is still great!] ..like Hillary said lol....See MoreWhat have you been baking lately?
Comments (40)I'll probably get rocks thrown at me for admitting to using a box mix....BUT...I have struggled with a banana bread recipe that I am really happy with for quite some time. My neighbor makes really good banana bread...I love it. Very basic recipe but I can not seem to duplicate it. Mine just doesn't come out the same. She used to bring me some when she'd bake but we're not friends anymore SO NO MORE OF HER GOOD BANANA BREAD FOR ME!! lol Anyways...I had 2 overripe bananas at home so I decided to try the Chiquita brand box mix for banana bread...2 bananas water and an egg.....well what do you know....some pretty good banana bread for out of box!! There's one piece left :-)...See Morebcskye
