Okay, I know, totally off topic (OT) but has anyone ever accidentally called their spouse DH (darling husband) or DW (darling wife) or in mid conversation with someone about kitchen remodeling refferred to yourself as TKO (totally kitchen obsessed)? Or said in passing "oh, and BTW (by the way)..." or "and FWIW (for what it's worth)...". I mean actually using the letters, not the actual phrases...OUT LOUD???!!! I mean seriously, this forum is like an illness for me. I spend WAYYYY too much time here. I was walking with my neighbor last night and actually said, "well DH and I are going to a wine party next Saturday, can you keep Ben and Sam overnight for me?". She said, "WHO?" and I didn't even catch on that I had said DH out loud! DUH! LOL!

I need a pill.

Not out loud, not yet...but sometimes, when I'm writing an email for work or non-kitchen personal business (like soccer and school), I find myself using "our" acronyms! E.g., OTOH & yes, FWIW! I even made mention of my husband & kids in an email and referenced them as DH, DS, & DD. Luckily, I use spellcheck so when I send my emails my spellchecker asks me about them and I realize what I've done and I can fix them!

Not yet either.

However, when I was at Costco yesterday, I noticed Fine Homebuilding had published their annual Kitchens and Bath issue and bought it.

What's wrong with that you ask? Well, we just moved into the dream home we built with the dream kitchen and bathrooms, and I have no plans to remodel for a long, long time.

Talk about TKO! Somebody shoot me!

Hi tncraft, Our Bosch is an older model 500 series, now discontinued. It's about 8 or 9 years old and cleans as efficiently and quietly as it did when new. About the only problem is that the printing on the control buttons (ours in an integrated model with all the controls concealed along the top edge of the door) has all been steamed off over the years and I have to remember which button does what because you can't read the letters without a flashlight anymore. The 800 series Bosch machines are reportedly still made in Germany. While they feature the all stainless tubs and cutlery drawers, they are also fairly steep, price-wise. Once you get up into Miele pricing terrain, I think one should always evaluate Miele products themselves. Though I do not own a Miele dishwasher, I am *very* impressed with the quality of the materials and workmanship in those machines. They are very well insulated and entirely sheathed by steel panels. Look at one uncrated and compare it to any other machine. If I were to be in the market for a replacement dishwasher nowadays, I would probably select a Miele. But that is me. YOU should look for something in your price range that will suit your needs. Personally, I would forego the FP dish-drawer option: too many reports of trouble and bad service on those around here. But you can select a machine with a "top drawer only" cycle that will accomplish the same thing without taking away your option for the tall tub.

If you're prepping on that small space b/c of lack of water, then your new layout is not correcting that problem. Either you need to concede that you won't be prepping at the sink and plan accordingly, or do something about the lack of water...i.e., consider adding a prep sink to the island even though you like the "unbroken" look. I don't think making the counter BB is going to solve the problem....which, btw, will defeat the purpose of having an "unbroken" look. And remember, this island is going to be much bigger. If you think your kitchen is going to be a multi-cook kitchen, then a second source of water isn't a bad idea. I'd add the sink on the end of the island facing the cooktop...close to the outside aisle. This way you can bring food from the refrigerator directly to the island and prep. You will then also have a source of water near the cooktop. I wouldn't put the sink in the middle since then it is going to break up your workspace and if it's in the middle you may not be able to have someone working at the cooktop and the sink at the same time. The overall layout is pretty good...although I do think you need more space behind the island where the seating is b/c it's a major thoroughfare....I'd like to see at least 4' As I'm sure you've read on other posts, I think the MW should be in the perimeter of the kitchen along w/the refrigerator...both should definitely be IN the kitchen but easily accessible to snackers w/o interfering w/work in the kitchen. Is that wall b/w the refrigerator and oven necessary? You say the hutch is actually 5' wide...is it b/c the wall is actually longer than you show? You asked if storing dishes separately and far away from the DW is a problem...I'd have to say yes. I would actually like to see a narrower hutch and move the refrigerator down the wall some (toward the table & chairs). Then, I would put your MW either undercounter (MW drawer?) or mounted next to the refrigerator on the kitchen side. What are all those little walls along the hallway that leads to the stairs? Is that small cabinet(??) across from the island 9" deep? What did you plan to store there? It might make an acceptable Message Center--not the best b/c I think it should be at least 12" deep, but doable if you have nowhere else. Is that a desk I see next to the chair in the TV room? Will you actually use it? Or, will it just become a junk collector? Many people here have said they'd never do a desk again b/c it's usually better at attracting junk than being used to pay bills, etc. A Message Center provides space for phones, charging station, keys, calendar, etc. so you may not need a desk.

Which is, btw, part of my point -- these decisions get made, ultimately, in the deep context of background and experiences. In part because the surface-situation of strict cost:benefit analyses are so complex and subject to error. The decision is +/- binary in the end, but the inputs are so complicated.... in the end most of us are moved, consciously or otherwise, with what "feels" right -- we go with how we've been moved by or own stories, the more objective route being blocked. So, for example, my own experiences leave me ultimately feeling that washing, i.e., scrubbing, is cleaner than wiping, which is what happens with towels. It's pretty much a direct result of that eye-opening conversation with an Indian about personal hygiene. As well as seeing those tests that showed sponge and towel cleaning were completely insignificant in terms of resulting sterility; it mattered *how* you used those tools, not which one you used. Christine - you must know I pretty well hang on your every word. Maybe we should start a side-discussion (that pink forum) about our kitchen-cooking motivators. (I too got sick recently from a mayonnaise-based dressing that had been sitting on a table top in Polynesia: honestly, what was I thinking? These experiences negate thousands of little cloth-paper decisions for magical cleanliness insurance. It just takes once.) Ginny20 -- I highly recommend AdBlock Plus! It was recommended to me from someone on this forum. It's a free download and it's just stopped all that nonsense here and elsewhere. Love it... (though I thought paper towels were coming out pretty-ahead this time in this discussion? All the cat innards images amount to a really good data point in that camp to me....)

Keep Separate Dining Room or Enlarge Kitchen?

Long-time lurker here, but new to posting. I thought I would tell you how we are opening up our kitchen (currently gutted now). We have a 12'x16' Formal Living Room immediately to the left when walking into the foyer. Behind that is a 12.5' x 12' Formal Dining Room. The kitchen (small 10' x 10' plus breakfast nook) is in back, next to the dining room, and the family room is on the other side of the kitchen. I entertain our family of 17 several times a year and I'm not willing to give up the dining room. However, the living room, to me, is a HUGE waste of space. Nobody ever goes in there. In fact, whenever I host a gathering, everybody gathers in my tiny "U" kitchen and I can't move to open the oven, cabinets, etc. It drives me crazy. My solution: move the DR set into the larger living room, which is open by columns to the foyer, and expand the "U" of my kitchen into the dining room. This allows for a longer peninsula with breakfast bar. On the far wall of the "old" dining room, facing the kitchen, will be a "bar" area and a desk area. I will be able to supervise my girls doing homework, being online, etc. all while I prepare dinner. Plus, it gives our guests an area to socialize while meals are being prepared. I should also mention, though, that we have a small study with french doors. This room, essentially, will be the LR, and will house the piano, two chairs and a small desk or table. I do think it's important to have some type of private, closed-off room. I recommend reading some books by Sarah Susanka - her theory of using the space more wisely, as opposed to needing more space, was extremely valuable to me.

Hey Lil'sis, I have done it in emails. I also find myself thinking in those terms but catching myself. I'm done with my kitchen and baths too, and now am looking at homes to rehab/remodel. I don't really want to do that!!! BUT I NEED MY FIX! I can only confess this to you all, but we looked at a 110 year old victorian the other day, and I'm not sure why. It needs a complete update. I'm losing it.

When I am asked if I'm a designer when I give tours of the construction site I always say, "No, not a designer, TKO" They tend to smile and assume it's some other sort of degree heh heh Little do they know.

I told a designer that when (after an extensive tour of the site and it's future, including my design boards) she said "So where did you study?" heh heh I said TKOU (and dang I wish I'd have had my TKOU sweatshirt ladies! who was in charge of printing those?)

Hey there big sis! How ya been? We got our copper sink for the powder room BTW(off e-bay!). it's sitting on top of plywood now on our new vanity cabinet and I think I'm just going to tile the countertop instead of getting granite, although we did find an awesome deal on the granite. But we have all this tile laying around so I'm thinking...why not TRY tiling it for now, since it's basically free...and if we don't like it or we have problems with the grout then we'll change it later. It's just a powder room after all!

Anyhoo, I have my eye on a 130 year old historical home in our small town. I keep looking at it on the realtor's site (DH doesn't know that though) and picturing what I could do with it. We totally can't buy another house and if we did, it certainly wouldn't be here...but it sure is fun to think about!

On a forum board related to my professional life, the expression "PFO" ("Please f*** off") has become standard parlance there in reference to "thanks but no thanks" letters sent out following requests for auditions. "Did they send PFOs yet?" etc.

Apparently one gal called a company to check the status and only AFTER she hung up on the voicemail call did she realise she had said - to the COMPANY - "Did you send out the PFO's yet?".

Whoopsie... ;) Fortunately, the administrator who called her back didn't recognise the expression and said, "I couldn't quite understand your message..." etc and she got away with it!

Hey Robin, Great news about the copper sink. I find because ours is inset round vessel where you have to put your hands inside the bowl, that there is almost no water splashing. I think tiling will be fine. Will yours be inset, or are you doing an undermount? If a vessel, just be careful about how the vessel sits in the hole. Our granite guys actually beveled the inset to give a nice cradle for the sink. And....... DH is really serious about that old victorian. I can't believe it. I thought I'd have to have him carted away from this incredible oceanfront. I'm Having trouble thinking about leaving my lovely, organized, clean and picturesque place. OTOH, I never stop thinking about what else I could do. That victorian would be quite a project.
